    Dry matter yields and quality of organic lupin/cereal mixtures for wholecrop forage

    In view of climate change predictions and the general desirability of increasing the amount of home grown protein, a case exists for the investigation of lupins and lupin/cereal bicrop combinations as wholecrop forage on organic farms. A replicated randomised block trial is described which took place at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, in 2005. This involved spring sown blue, white and yellow lupins, millet, wheat and triticale and lupin/cereal bi-crops. Data for dry matter yields for wholecrop silage, crude protein, MAD fi bre content and estimated ME, are presented for a single harvest. It is concluded that white lupins and white lupin bi-crops with spring wheat or triticale offer the best prospects for a viable wholecrop forage crop in an organic situation

    A need exists for an automated performance test system to study drugs, agents, treatments, and stresses of interest to the aviation, space, and environmental medical community. The purpose of this present study is to evaluate tests for inclusion in the NASA-sponsored Automated Performance Test System (APTS). Twenty-one subjects were tested over 10 replications with tests previously identified as good candidates for repeated-measure research. The tests were concurrently administered in paper-and-pencil and microcomputer modes. Performance scores for the two modes were compared. Data from trials 1 to 10 were examined for indications of test stability and reliability. Nine of the ten APT system tests achieved stability. Reliabilities were generally high. Cross-correlation of microbased tests with traditional paper-and-pencil versions revealed similarity of content within tests in the different modes, and implied at least three cognition and two motor factors. This protable, inexpensive, rugged, computerized battery of tests is recommended for use in repeated-measures studies of environmental and drug effects on performance. Identification of other tests compatible with microcomputer testing and potentially capable of tapping previously unidentified factors is recommended. Documentation of APTS sensitivity to environmental agents is available for more than a dozen facilities and is reported briefly. Continuation of such validation remains critical in establishing the efficacy of APTS tests

    The susceptibility of roots to infection by an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus in relation to age and phosphorus supply

    An apparatus in which plant roots may be challenged uniformly with inoculum of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is described. Seedlings of leek (Allium porrum L.) or clover (Trifolium repens L.) were first grown non-symbiotically in the apparatus for 21 d at three rates of phosphorus (P) addition to soil (1 50 (PI), 450 (P3) and 750 (P5) mg P kg-1 soil). The positions of individual root tips were recorded, and the root systems then challenged with inoculum of Glomus mosseae (Nicol & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe. Roots were excised 14 d later, and the probability of occurrence of internal infection in successive 3 mm (clover) or 5 mm (leek) sections of root was estimated in first-order laterals (clover) or main axes (leek) from the proportion of sections at each location of replicate roots that bore internal fungal structures. Only in the region of a root proximal to the position of the root tips at inoculation could data be used to investigate change of probability of infection with cell age. Here, there were sharp declines in probability of infection with proximal distance, in both hosts and in all P treatments. The decline of probability was greater in clover: when expressed in terms of cell age at the time of challenge, there was no infection at Pl in cells > 10 d old in leek and none in cells > 7 d old in clover. Models of the form log(e) [p(i)/(1-p(i))] = alpha + beta x distance, where p(i) is the estimated probability of infection and alpha and beta are constants, were fitted to these data. The odds on infection are [p(i)/(1-p(i))]. For leek, 8 was unaltered by P addition (P3 and P5 curves were parallel to P1) but from alpha it could be calculated that on average the odds on successful infection at any particular distance were reduced by 3 7 % and 70 % by P3 and P5 rates of P addition respectively. In clover the curves for the three P treatments were not parallel. Addition of P appeared to reduce the odds on infection of clover much more than those of leek. We conclude that the simplest explanation for the patterns of infection in leek is that P addition increased the time taken for soil inoculum of G. mosseae to infect roots: the mechanism in clover might be more complex

    The z=0.0912 and z=0.2212 Damped Lyman Alpha Galaxies Along the Sight-Line Toward the Quasar OI 363

    New optical and infrared observations along the sight-line toward the quasar OI 363 (0738+313) are presented and discussed. Excluding systems which lack confirming UV spectroscopic observations of the actual Lyman alpha line, this sight-line presently contains the two lowest-redshift classical damped Lyman alpha (DLA) quasar absorption line systems known (i.e. with N(HI) \ge 2 x 10^{20} atoms cm^{-2}), one at z(abs)=0.0912 and the other at z(abs)=0.2212. The z=0.09 DLA galaxy appears to be an extended low surface brightness galaxy which is easily visible only in infrared images and shows rich morphological structure. Subtraction of the quasar nuclear and host light yields L_K \approx 0.08L_K* at z=0.09. The impact parameter between the galaxy and quasar sight-line is very small, b<3.6 kpc (<2 arcsec), which makes measurements difficult. The z=0.22 DLA galaxy is an early-type dwarf with a K-band luminosity of L_K \approx 0.1L_K* at impact parameter b=20 kpc. In general, these results serve to support mounting evidence that DLA galaxies are drawn from a wide variety of gas-rich galaxy types. (Abridged)Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, 2 in color.     Soybean is a most important crop worldwide, accounting for 56% of world oilseed production and 69% of world protein meal consumption in 2003 (Soystats, 2004). Since their introduction in the early 1800\u27s, forage soybeans have been grown widely in USA. Used originally as a forage crop, this use largely had been forgotten until Dr T. E. Devine (United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service; USDA-ARS) released 4 new forage cultivars. Soybeans potentially offer UK farmers a high quality protein source in a short season and also meet the requirements of supermarket chains to remain GM free.
