“A Matter of Great Importance”: Interest Groups, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings
As Senator Arlen Specter once explained, the Supreme Court confirmation process is a “matter of great importance” to the president, the nominee, senators, and the public at large. The public cares who sits on the Court, and interest groups play a key role in disseminating information about the nominee and his or her qualifications for the job. In this paper, we focus on one piece of interest groups’ involvement in Supreme Court confirmation hearings: their decision to send senators summarized information about the nominees via briefing books. We use a combination of archival research and text analysis to examine the briefing books that organized interests sent to Senator Specter during Robert Bork’s nomination, which we then compare with the information provided by “official” sources (the White House) as well as the less formal ones (constituents). Our research suggests that interest groups highlight the controversial areas of a nominee’s tenure, while official sources highlight qualifications and constituents speak about the nominee in more general, affective terms
When the Senate plays politics with Supreme Court vacancies this hurts the public’s perceptions of the Court
The recent US Senate confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court has shown how politicized such hearings have become. But how do these more contentious hearings influence how the American public thinks about the Supreme Court itself? In new survey research, Miles T. Armaly and Elizabeth A. Lane examine reactions to the US Senate’s approach to filling Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat. They find that respondents who were told about the politicization of a past vacancy were less likely to express support for the Supreme Court and to favor reforms which would reduce its power
Housing Affordability, Stress And Single Mothers: Pathway To Homelessness
Examining the research literature in housing, planning, and the social sciences, this paper argues that the housing crisis of the 1980s spawned a new environmental stress, housing affordability, which has had devastating consequences for economically vulnerable single mothers and their children. A conceptual framework is developed that depicts how the housing affordability dilemma generates a pathway to homelessness beset by four pinchpoints: a resource squeeze that precipitates loss of permanent housing; residential mobility that destabilizes families; discrimination in the housing market that constrains housing choices; and multiple stressors that demoralize a fragile family system. Implications of these findings are discussed, including attention to housing problems of single mothers in both social policy and direct practice arenas

Product Market Competition and Human Resource Practices: An Analysis of the Retail Food Sector
The rise of super-centers and the entry of Wal-Mart into food retailing have dramatically altered the competitive environment in the industry. This paper explores the impact of such changes on the labor market practices of traditional food retailers. We use longitudinal data on workers and firms to construct new measures of compensation and employment, and examine how these measures evolve within and across firms in response to changes in product market structure. Investigating the possible futures of communities driven by emerging digital technology and affected by community-centred design
Emerging digital technology can positively impact humans, but its existence and rapid advancement also causes unintended consequences and externalities – the costs and benefits of the industry’s activity – in society. In particular, emerging digital technology is disrupting healthy communities. With healthy communities as the backbone of a democratic society, the risks of unintended impacts, such as social fragmentation and social polarization, are significant. Therefore, this research explores a definition of healthy community, the evolution of community in the context of technology, and how digital technology can be designed to preserve and build healthy communities now and across various possible futures. Leveraging systems thinking and foresight methodologies, multi-level system community-fortifying interventions are developed, propelling the paradigm shift from human-centred design to community-centred design
Patient characteristics can influence the incidence of perioperative microemboli during carotid artery interventions
Purpose. Perioperative cerebral microembolization demonstrated on diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) can occur following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS). We sought to explore potential risk factors for this in the large patient cohort. Methods. We reviewed a 6-year consecutive patient cohort that received either CEA or CAS, and perioperative DWI evaluations. Results. 303 patients were reviewed, and 56 (19.4%) patients were found to have perioperative microemboli. The incidence was higher among patients who received CAS (P < 0.001). Hypertension (P = 0.03), smoking (P = 0.001), and a history of transient ischemic attacks (P = 0.04) were risk factors for microembolization. The risk was higher among CEA patients with obesity (P = 0.05), and among CAS patients with coronary artery disease (P = 0.03). Conclusion. Specific patient populations are likely more prone to develop perioperative cerebral microemboli following carotid intervention. Continued risk stratification may help decrease future perioperative cerebral microembolization rates.</jats:p
Prolonged Treatments With Antiresorptive Agents and PTH Have Different Effects on Bone Strength and the Degree of Mineralization in Old Estrogen-Deficient Osteoporotic Rats
Current approved medical treatments for osteoporosis reduce fracture risk to a greater degree than predicted from change in BMD in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. We hypothesize that bone active agents improve bone strength in osteoporotic bone by altering different material properties of the bone. Eighteen-month-old female Fischer rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated and left untreated for 60 days to induce osteopenia before they were treated with single doses of either risedronate (500 μg/kg, IV), zoledronic acid (100 μg/kg, IV), raloxifene (2 mg/kg, PO, three times per week), hPTH(1-34) (25 μg/kg, SC, three times per week), or vehicle (NS; 1 ml/kg, three times per week). Groups of animals were killed after days 60 and 180 of treatment, and either the proximal tibial metaphysis or lumbar vertebral body were studied. Bone volume and architecture were assessed by μCT and histomorphometry. Measurements of bone quality included the degree of bone mineralization (DBM), localized elastic modulus, bone turnover by histomorphometry, compression testing of the LVB, and three-point bending testing of the femur. The trabecular bone volume, DBM, elastic modulus, and compressive bone strength were all significantly lower at day 60 post-OVX (pretreatment, day 0 study) than at baseline. After 60 days of all of the bone active treatments, bone mass and material measurements agent were restored. However, after 180 days of treatment, the OVX + PTH group further increased BV/TV (+30% from day 60, p < 0.05 within group and between groups). In addition, after 180 days of treatment, there was more highly mineralized cortical and trabecular bone and increased cortical bone size and whole bone strength in OVX + PTH compared with other OVX + antiresorptives. Treatment of estrogen-deficient aged rats with either antiresorptive agents or PTH rapidly improved many aspects of bone quality including microarchitecture, bone mineralization, turnover, and bone strength. However, prolonged treatment for 180 days with PTH resulted in additional gains in bone quality and bone strength, suggesting that the maximal gains in bone strength in cortical and trabecular bone sites may require a longer treatment period with PTH
Composite Scalars at LEP: Constraining Technicolor Theories
LEPI and LEPII data can be used to constrain technicolor models with light,
neutral pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Pa. We use published limits on branching
ratios and cross sections for final states with photons, large missing energy,
jet pairs, and b bbar pairs to constrain the anomalous Pa Z0 Z0, Pa Z0 photon,
and Pa photon photon couplings. From these results, we derive bounds on the
size of the technicolor gauge group and the number of technifermion doublets in

Resonant and Non-Resonant Effects in Photon-Technipion Production at Lepton Colliders
Lepton collider experiments can search for light technipions in final states
made striking by the presence of an energetic photon: e+e- \to
\photon\technipion. To date, searches have focused on either production
through anomalous coupling of the technipions to electroweak gauge bosons or on
production through a technivector meson (\technirho, \techniomega) resonance.
This paper creates a combined framework in which both contributions are
included. This will allow stronger and more accurate limits on technipion
production to be set using existing data from LEP or future data from a
higher-energy linear collider. We provide explicit formulas and sample
calculations (analytic and Pythia) in the framework of the Technicolor Straw
