CHIANTI - an Atomic Database for Emission Lines. Paper VI: Proton Rates and Other Improvements
The CHIANTI atomic database contains atomic energy levels, wavelengths,
radiative transition probabilities and electron excitation data for a large
number of ions of astrophysical interest. Version 4 has been released, and
proton excitation data is now included, principally for ground configuration
levels that are close in energy. The fitting procedure for excitation data,
both electrons and protons, has been extended to allow 9 point spline fits in
addition to the previous 5 point spline fits. This allows higher quality fits
to data from close-coupling calculations where resonances can lead to
significant structure in the Maxwellian-averaged collision strengths. The
effects of photoexcitation and stimulated emission by a blackbody radiation
field in a spherical geometry on the level balance equations of the CHIANTI
ions can now be studied following modifications to the CHIANTI software. With
the addition of H I, He I and N I, the first neutral species have been added to
CHIANTI. Many updates to existing ion data-sets are described, while several
new ions have been added to the database, including Ar IV, Fe VI and Ni XXI.
The two-photon continuum is now included in the spectral synthesis routines,
and a new code for calculating the relativistic free-free continuum has been
added. The treatment of the free-bound continuum has also been updated.Comment: CHIANTI is available at http://wwwsolar.nrl.navy.mil/chianti.htm
Four electrons in a two-leg Hubbard ladder: exact ground states
In the case of a two-leg Hubbard ladder we present a procedure which allows
the exact deduction of the ground state for the four particle problem in
arbitrary large lattice system, in a tractable manner, which involves only a
reduced Hilbert space region containing the ground state. In the presented
case, the method leads to nine analytic, linear, and coupled equations
providing the ground state. The procedure which is applicable to few particle
problems and other systems as well is based on an r-space representation of the
wave functions and construction of symmetry adapted orthogonal basis wave
vectors describing the Hilbert space region containing the ground state. Once
the ground state is deduced, a complete quantum mechanical characterization of
the studied state can be given. Since the analytic structure of the ground
state becomes visible during the use of the method, its importance is not
reduced only to the understanding of theoretical aspects connected to exact
descriptions or potential numerical approximation scheme developments, but is
relevant as well for a large number of potential technological application
possibilities placed between nano-devices and quantum calculations, where the
few particle behavior and deep understanding are important key aspects to know.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Structure and Magnetism of Neutral and Anionic Palladium Clusters
The properties of neutral and anionic Pd_N clusters were investigated with
spin-density-functional calculations. The ground state structures are
three-dimensional for N>3 and they are magnetic with a spin-triplet for 2<=N<=7
and a spin nonet for N=13 neutral clusters. Structural- and spin-isomers were
determined and an anomalous increase of the magnetic moment with temperature is
predicted for a Pd_7 ensemble. Vertical electron detachment and ionization
energies were calculated and the former agree well with measured values for
anionic Pd_N clusters.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, fig. 2 in color, accepted to Phys. Rev. Lett.

Connective neck evolution and conductance steps in hot point contacts
Dynamic evolution of the connective neck in Al and Pb mechanically
controllable break junctions was studied during continuous approach of
electrodes at bias voltages V_b up to a few hundred mV. A high level of power
dissipation (10^-4 - 10^-3 W) and high current density (j > 10^10 A/cm^2) in
the constriction lead to overheating of the contact area, electromigration and
current-enhanced diffusion of atoms out of the "hot spot". At a low electrode
approach rate (10 - 50 pm/s) the transverse dimension of the neck and the
conductance of the junction depend on V_b and remain nearly constant over the
approach distance of 10 - 30 nm. For V_b > 300 mV the connective neck consists
of a few atoms only and the quantum nature of conductance manifests itself in
abrupt steps and reversible jumps between two or more levels. These features
are related to an ever changing number of individual conductance channels due
to the continuous rearrangement in atomic configuration of the neck, the
recurring motion of atoms between metastable states, the formation and breaking
of isolated one-atom contacts and the switching between energetically
preferable neck geometries.Comment: 21 pages 10 figure
Production of Designer Mabe Pearls in the Black-lipped Pearl Oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, and the Winged Pearl Oyster, Pteria penguin, from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India
The black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera,
is sporadically distributed in the
Indo-Pacific region, where they have been traditionally
used for food, ornaments, jewelry, tools,
and more recently for the production of black
pearls (Lane et al. 2003). During the past two
decades, black pearl farming programs have
been initiated by several nations and are now
at various levels of productio
Mechanical properties and formation mechanisms of a wire of single gold atoms
A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) supplemented with a force sensor is
used to study the mechanical properties of a novel metallic nanostructure: a
freely suspended chain of single gold atoms. We find that the bond strength of
the nanowire is about twice that of a bulk metallic bond. We perform ab initio
calculations of the force at chain fracture and compare quantitatively with
experimental measurements. The observed mechanical failure and nanoelastic
processes involved during atomic wire fabrication are investigated using
molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and we find that the total effective
stiffness of the nanostructure is strongly affected by the detailed local
atomic arrangement at the chain bases.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 4 pages with 3 figure
Health-Related Quality of Life and Mortality in a General and Elderly Population of Patients With Type 2 Diabetes (ZODIAC-18)
OBJECTIVE- Diabetes negatively impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients with type 2 diabetes. An earlier analysis showed HRQOL to be associated with mortality, which suggests that measuring HRQOL could have clinical implications. We studied the association between HRQOL and total and cardiovascular mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes during long-term follow-up and specifically focused on old age and sex differences. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS- HRQOL was measured in a prospectively followed cohort of 1,353 patients with type 2 diabetes using the RAND-36. Cox proportional hazard models were used to measure the independent effect of baseline HRQOL on mortality. RESULTS- During a mean follow-up of 9.6 years, 570 (42%) patients died, 280 of whom died of cardiovascular disease (49%). The Physical Component Score (PCS) and the Mental Component Score (MCS) were inversely associated with total mortality, with hazard ratios of 0.988(95% CI 0.983-0.993) and 0.990(95% CI 0.985-0.995), respectively. A 10-point-higher score on the PCS and MCS decreased the risk for total mortality by 11 and 10%, respectively. An inverse relationship with mortality was also seen for men, women, and for patients aged >75 years. Mental health was significantly related to mortality in men but not in women. CONCLUSIONS- Lower physical and mental HRQOL was associated with a higher total mortality and cardiovascular mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes; this is also the case when studying men and women and the elderly separately. The dimension mental health, related to depression and anxiety, was only associated with mortality in men, not in women
Atomistic Studies of Defect Nucleation during Nanoindentation of Au (001)
Atomistic studies are carried out to investigate the formation and evolution
of defects during nanoindentation of a gold crystal. The results in this
theoretical study complement the experimental investigations [J. D. Kiely and
J. E. Houston, Phys. Rev. B, v57, 12588 (1998)] extremely well. The defects are
produced by a three step mechanism involving nucleation, glide and reaction of
Shockley partials on the {111} slip planes noncoplanar with the indented
surface. We have observed that slip is in the directions along which the
resolved shear stress has reached the critical value of approximately 2 GPa.
The first yield occurs when the shear stresses reach this critical value on all
the {111} planes involved in the formation of the defect. The phenomenon of
strain hardening is observed due to the sessile stair-rods produced by the
zipping of the partials. The dislocation locks produced during the second yield
give rise to permanent deformation after retraction.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Instability driven fragmentation of nanoscale fractal islands
Formation and evolution of fragmentation instabilities in fractal islands,
obtained by deposition of silver clusters on graphite, are studied. The
fragmentation dynamics and subsequent relaxation to the equilibrium shapes are
controlled by the deposition conditions and cluster composition. Sharing common
features with other materials' breakup phenomena, the fragmentation instability
is governed by the length-to-width ratio of the fractal arms.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Physical Review Letters in pres
