    Analysis of the Racial and Ethnic Representation of Adult Male Inmates in Large Jail Isolation Units in the United States

    Black males are overrepresented in US large jails, and this overrepresentation may extend into their isolations units, or DHUs. While overrepresentation in prison populations has been explored and well documented in academic literature. Far less is known about overrepresentation in jail populations where prisoners serve far less time, and in some cases, may not yet be convicted of crimes. The study analyzed the classification of adult male prisoners to DHU within large jails. This central research question of the study primarily focused on exploring the causes and prevalence of overrepresentation in DHUs in jails based on race or ethnicity. The theoretical construct of this study was based on Foucault’s (1975) theory of panopticism. The purpose of this quantitative study was first to document whether an overrepresentation problem existed among US large jails. The sample for this study included wardens or directors of 40 large jails across the US. Data were collected by an electronic survey and were analyzed by logistic regression. Findings indicate a statistically significant relationship between race and ethnicity and the potential placement in DHUs, particularly among adult Black male populations. This statistical finding indicates that Foucault’s panopticism theory does not address correctional staff training and potential bias

    Growers generally use herbicides to efficiently produce high-quality fruit and vegetables for processing or fresh market sales. Due to the smaller acreage of these crops compared to major field crops, fewer herbicides are registered for use in fruit and vegetable crops than for field crops. Each year, new herbicides are evaluated under Arkansas growing conditions with the objective of improving the herbicide technology for the grower, processor, and ultimately the consumer. This report includes studies on the control of many of the more serious weed problems in important crops of this region, including snapbeans, spinach, southernpeas, watermelon, cantaloupe, summer squash, and grapes. In addition, the report includes information on the tolerance of selected bedding plants to some effective herbicides

    The Last of the Finite Loop Amplitudes in QCD

    We use on-shell recursion relations to determine the one-loop QCD scattering amplitudes with a massless external quark pair and an arbitrary number (n-2) of positive-helicity gluons. These amplitudes are the last of the unknown infrared- and ultraviolet-finite loop amplitudes of QCD. The recursion relations are similar to ones applied at tree level, but contain new non-trivial features corresponding to poles present for complex momentum arguments but absent for real momenta. We present the relations and the compact solutions to them, valid for all n. We also present compact forms for the previously-computed one-loop n-gluon amplitudes with a single negative helicity and the rest positive helicity.Comment: 45 pages, revtex, 7 figures, v2 minor correction

    Differences Between High Shear / Low CAPE Environments in the Northeast US Favoring Straight-Line Damaging Winds versus Tornadoes

    High shear / low CAPE (HSLC) environments are common in the Northeast US and can occur at any time of year. Severe weather in HSLC environments is notoriously hard to predict, often catching both forecasters and the general public off-guard. The goal of this project is to help forecasters to identify HSLC environments favorable for severe weather in the Northeast US, and to discriminate between HSLC environments that are supportive of tornadoes versus those that favor straight-line damaging winds (SDW). A 10-year HSLC severe weather environmental climatology was created for the Northeast US (New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania). This climatology includes 54 different parameters that can be used to identify and describe severe weather environments. HSLC criteria was defined as surface-based CAPE (SBCAPE) ≤ 500 J kg−1, most unstable parcel CAPE (MUCAPE) and mixed-layer CAPE (MLCAPE) ≤ 1000 J kg−1, and 0–6-km wind shear ≥ 18 m s−1 (Sherburn et al. 2016). Events included in the climatology consisted of numerous (≥5) straight-line damaging wind reports, or at least 1 tornado report. Each event was classified by the season in which it occurred and the mode (discrete, cluster of cells, quasi-linear convective system (QLCS)) of the storm which produced the reports. Results show that warm-season HSLC severe events typically occurred either at the beginning or at the tail end of an event in an environment where CAPE values were predominantly too large to meet the HSLC criteria. Storm mode was variable for warm-season events, but cool-season events were dominated by QLCSs. Results show lifted condensation levels (LCLs) as well as low-level shear and wind direction as some of the most skillful parameters at discriminating between tornadic and non-tornadic events. There are various other useful parameters, including but not limited to, surface relative humidity, effective shear magnitude, and convective inhibition. The usefulness of these, and other parameters, at discriminating between HSLC environments favorable for SDW versus tornadoes will be discussed

    The Biology and Taxonomy of Head and Body Lice: Implications for Louse-Borne Disease Prevention

    Sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) are obligate blood-feeding ectoparasites of placental mammals including humans. Worldwide, more than 550 species have been described and many are specific to a particular host species of mammal. Three taxa uniquely parasitize humans: the head louse, body louse, and crab (pubic) louse. The body louse, in particular, has epidemiological importance because it is a vector of the causative agents of three important human diseases: epidemic typhus, trench fever, and louse-borne relapsing fever. Since the advent of antibiotics and more effective body louse control measures in the 1940s, these diseases have markedly diminished in incidence. However, due to 1) increasing pediculicide resistance in human lice, 2) reemergence of body louse populations in some geographic areas and demographic groups, 3) persistent head louse infestations, and 4) recent detection of body louse-borne pathogens in head lice, lice and louse-borne diseases are an emerging problem worldwide. This mini-review is focused on human body and head lice including their biological relationship to each other and its epidemiological relevance, the status and treatment of human louse-borne diseases, and current approaches to prevention and control of human louse infestations
