Navigating the Information Highway: A Multilayered Approach for First-Year Graduate Students

Taylor University’s Zondervan Library developed a multifaceted approach of engagement with graduate students of the Master of Higher Education and Student Development program, utilizing a variety of venues and courses relating to advanced research and writing. Regular assessments provided feedback for improvement within the embedded program structure. A second component of this model involved an archival project, which facilitated student research with primary documents in the university archives. Overall, graduate student understanding and ownership of the research process increased, and teaching faculty noticed improvement in the quality of research-based assignments as well as the program’s thesis project

Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) gimballed star tracker

    Get PDF
Design and development of six gimballed star trackers for Skylab's Apollo Telescope Mount, which performed successfully on all three manned Skylab missions and accumulated a total usage time of approximately 3,500 hours, is described in terms of configurations, materials and construction, qualification testing, performance, and reliability characteristics. A brief program history and design changes incorporated during the life of the program are also discussed. Extensive drawings, block diagrams, and photographs are provided

Matters of Preference: Tracing the Line between Citizens, Democratic States, and International Law

In this Article, we assess the role the aggregation of citizen preferences into the foreign policy choices of a democratic country might play in the legitimization of international law. After addressing some of the theoretical and empirical issues associated with such an approach, we use an anticipated reaction model developed by Michael Bailey to show that even in large democracies there are mechanisms through which citizen preferences can be and are reflected in the policy choices of their representatives. Incumbents and candidates for office take policy positions in hopes of maximizing their future election chances. Although policymakers each have their own personal policy preferences, those preferences must be balanced against those of the electorate to optimize the prospects for future election. Rational well-informed policymakers anticipate future electoral consequences of public opinion and adjust their present policy positions accordingly. We then discuss the implications of such an approach for the principle of subsidiarity and the participation of states in multilateral institutions, in particular the International Monetary Fund. We argue that there is reason to believe that citizen preferences remain relevant in decisions whether to centralize or decentralize, and in decisions whether a state will support or undermine the mission of international institutions, which must be taken into account as those institutions make their own substantive and procedural choices

Bubble Free Energy in Cosmological Phase Transitions

Free energy as a function of temperature and the bubble radius is determined for spherical bubbles created in cosmological first order phase transitions. The phase transition is assumed to be driven by an order parameter (e.g. a Higgs field) with quartic potential. The definition of the bubble radius and the corresponding generalized, curvature-dependent surface tensions are discussed. In the free energy expansion in powers of the inverse radius, the coefficients of the curvature term and the constant term are also calculated.Comment: 9 pages ( + 7 figures, available on request as a 130 kB Postscript file or by fax or mail), plain Latex, HU-TFT-92-5

An investigation of depression and fatigue post West Nile virus infection.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine depression and fatigue in individuals with a seropositive confirmed history of West Nile virus (WNV) infection. METHODS: The South Dakota State Epidemiologist sent 218 letters inviting residents with a diagnosis of WNV to participate in the study. Forty-five subjects were tested. An occupational therapist and a physical therapist met with each participant to assess performance parameters, including depression and fatigue levels. Subjects (n=42) completed the Revised Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) during the assessment. The Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) was sent to participants as a follow-up questionnaire, and 29 were returned. Subjects were placed within one of three diagnosis groups: West Nile Fever (WNF), West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease (WNND) and WNV without fever or neuroinvasive disease (clinical/unspecified). RESULTS: Frequency of those reporting low risk of depression was similar between diagnosis groups (each approximating 75 percent). Depression severity differences were noted, with subjects diagnosed with WNND more likely to report severe risk for depression. Low correlations between depression and overall fatigue, depression and cognitive fatigue, and depression and psychosocial fatigue indicators were found. There was little if any correlation between depression and physical fatigue indicators. Mean CES-D scores for subjects between 13 to 18 months post infection fell within the mild-moderate risk for depression category. CONCLUSIONS: Identifying depression risk is useful for patient referral purposes and may help minimize symptoms of depression correlated with fatigue, especially following hospitalization for WNV infection
