    COVID-19 and hospitalizations for SARI in Brazil: a comparison up to the 12th epidemiological week of 2020.

    Surveillance of the severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in Brazil aims to characterize the circulation of the Influenza A and B viruses in hospitalized cases and deaths, having been expanded in 2012 to include other respiratory viruses. COVID-19 was detected in Brazil for the time in the 9th epidemiological week of 2020, and the test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus was included in the surveillance protocol starting in the 12th epidemiological week. This study's objective was to investigate the pattern of hospitalizations for SARI in Brazil since the entry of SARS-CoV-2, comparing the temporal and age profiles and laboratory results to the years 2010 through 2019. In 2020, hospitalizations for SARI, compiled from the date of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 up to the 12th week, exceeded the numbers observed during the same period in each of the previous 10 years. The age bracket over 60 years was the most heavily affected, at higher than historical levels. There was a considerable increase in negative laboratory tests, suggesting circulation of a different virus from those already present in the panel. We concluded that the increase in hospitalizations for SARI, the lack of specific information on the etiological agent, and the predominance of cases among the elderly during the same period in which there was an increase in the number of new cases of COVID-19 are all consistent with the hypothesis that severe cases of COVID-19 are already being detected by SARI surveillance, placing an overload on the health system. The inclusion of testing for SARS-CoV-2 in the SARI surveillance protocol and the test's effective nationwide deployment are extremely important for monitoring the evolution of severe COVID-19 cases in Brazil

    Spatial memory in the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus)

    Wild animals face the challenge of locating feeding sites distributed across broad spatial and temporal scales. Spatial memory allows animals to find a goal, such as a productive feeding patch, even when there are no goal-specific sensory cues available. Because there is little experimental information on learning and memory capabilities in free-ranging primates, the aim of this study was to test whether grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus), as short-term dietary specialists, rely on spatial memory in relocating productive feeding sites. In addition, we asked what kind of spatial representation might underlie their orientation in their natural environment. Using an experimental approach, we set eight radio-collared grey mouse lemurs a memory task by confronting them with two different spatial patterns of baited and non-baited artificial feeding stations under exclusion of sensory cues. Positional data were recorded by focal animal observations within a grid system of small foot trails. A change in the baiting pattern revealed that grey mouse lemurs primarily used spatial cues to relocate baited feeding stations and that they were able to rapidly learn a new spatial arrangement. Spatially concentrated, non-random movements revealed preliminary evidence for a route-based restriction in mouse lemur space; during a subsequent release experiment, however, we found high travel efficiency in directed movements. We therefore propose that mouse lemur spatial memory is based on some kind of mental representation that is more detailed than a route-based network map

    Immunization of dogs with DNA-prime/DNA-boost vaccine (TcVac1) enhanced the Trypanosoma cruzi-specific type 1 antibody and CD8+ T cell responses that resulted in an early control of acute parasitemia and a moderate decline in pathological symptoms during chronic phase. Further improvement of vaccine-induced immunity would be required to achieve clinical and epidemiological benefits and prevent transmission of parasites from vaccinated/infected dogs to triatomines

    A phase II study of amrubicin and carboplatin for previously untreated patients with extensive-disease small cell lung cancer

    Background: Amrubicin is active in the treatment of extensive-disease small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC), and carboplatin is an analogue of cisplatin with less non-hematological toxicity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and toxicity of amrubicin and carboplatin combination chemotherapy for previously untreated patients with ED-SCLC. Patients and methods: Eligibility criteria were chemotherapy-naive ED-SCLC patients, performance status 0-1, age ?75, and adequate hematological, hepatic and renal function. Based on the phase I study, the patients received amrubicin 35 mg/m2 i.v. infusion on days 1, 2, and 3, and carboplatin AUC 5 i.v. infusion on day 1. Four cycles of chemotherapy were repeated every 3 weeks. Results: Thirty-five patients were enrolled, and 34 patients were eligible and assessable for response, toxicity, and survival. Patients\u27 characteristics were as follows: male/female = 26/8; performance status 0/1 = 4/30; median age (range) = 64 (41-75); stage IV = 34. Evaluation of responses was 6 complete response, 21 partial response, and 7 stable disease (response rate 79.4 %, 95 % CI 63.6-88.5 %). Grade 3 and 4 leukopenia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia occurred in 59, 82, and 26 %, respectively. There were no treatment-related deaths or pneumonitis. Three patients experienced hypotension as an amrubicin infusion reaction. The median progression-free survival time was 6.5 months. The median overall survival time and 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 15.6 months, and 63, 28, and 7 %, respectively. Conclusions: Amrubicin and carboplatin were effective and tolerable as chemotherapy for previously untreated patients with ED-SCLC. Further investigation of amrubicin and carboplatin is warranted

    Short-Lived Trace Gases in the Surface Ocean and the Atmosphere

    The two-way exchange of trace gases between the ocean and the atmosphere is important for both the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere and the biogeochemistry of the oceans, including the global cycling of elements. Here we review these exchanges and their importance for a range of gases whose lifetimes are generally short compared to the main greenhouse gases and which are, in most cases, more reactive than them. Gases considered include sulphur and related compounds, organohalogens, non-methane hydrocarbons, ozone, ammonia and related compounds, hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Finally, we stress the interactivity of the system, the importance of process understanding for modeling, the need for more extensive field measurements and their better seasonal coverage, the importance of inter-calibration exercises and finally the need to show the importance of air-sea exchanges for global cycling and how the field fits into the broader context of Earth System Science

    A esclerose múltipla é uma doença imunomediada do sistema nervoso central com ampla variação nos seus aspectos clínicos. No Brasil, aspectos étnicos e demográficos demonstram estas variações, como observado em várias casuísticas brasileiras. O presente estudo retrospectivo consta da análise descritiva dos aspectos clínicos e epidemiológicos de 20 casos de esclerose múltipla acompanhados em Cuiabá, cidade situada na região centro-oeste do Brasil. Os pacientes foram diagnosticados no período entre 1998 e 2005 no ambulatório de Neurologia do CRIDAC. Houve predomínio no sexo feminino (75%), sendo observada significativa incidência sobre a etnia negra (20%). A média do EDSS inicial/final foi 1,85/3,9. A forma evolutiva mais comum foi a remitente-recorrente (75%), com 55% do total de pacientes sendo naturais de Mato Grosso. Os sintomas piramidais (90%), cerebelares (60%) e visuais (25%) foram os mais freqüentemente observados. Todos os pacientes estavam em uso de imunomoduladores ou imunossupressores.<br>Multiple sclerosis is an acquired immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system that show a widely variation of clinical aspects. In Brazil, demographic and ethnical aspects show these variations as has been demonstrated by many Brazilian papers. This retrospective study evaluated epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 20 multiple sclerosis patients followed in Cuiaba, situated on Brazil middle west region. The patients were classified followed at Neurology Ambulatory of CRIDAC from 1998 to 2005. The data show a 3:1 female/male ratio and that 20% of patients were from black origin. EDSS medium range was 3.9; 55% of patients were born in Mato Grosso State. The most common symptoms were pyramidal (90%), cerebellar (60%) and visual (25%). All patients were on immunomodulatory or immunosupressive treatment
