A candidate V/STOL research aircraft concept which uses an S-3A airframe and two Pegasus 11 engines was studied to identify a feasible V/STOL national flight facility that could be obtained at the lowest possible cost for the demonstration of V/STOL technology, inflight simulation, and flight research. The rationale for choosing the configuration, a description of the configuration, and the capability of a fully developed aircraft are discussed

Future of V/STOL aircraft systems: A survey of opinions

    Get PDF
The recent success of the British Harriers in the Falkland Islands conflict vividly underscored the potential of V/STOL aircraft in military operations in a difficult environment. Despite this apparent success of the Harrier, there has been a major decline of V/STOL funding in the research and development budgets of the U.S. government and industry. The recent funding history of V/STOL systems is examined. Responses to a questionnaire which asked the question, Should there be an operational V/STOL aircraft other than the AV-8A and AV-8B in the military aircraft fleet of the U.S.A.? are presented and discussed

Fractional snow cover in the Colorado and Rio Grande basins, 1995-2002

A cloud-masked fractional snow-covered area (SCA) product gridded at 1 km was developed from the advanced very high resolution radiometer for the Colorado River and upper Rio Grande basins for 1995-2002. Cloud cover limited SCA retrievals on any given 1-km2 pixel to on average once per week. There were sufficient cloud-free scenes to map SCA over at least part of the basins up to 21 days per month, with 3 months having only two scenes sufficiently cloud free to process. In the upper Colorado and upper Grande, SCA peaked in February-March. Maxima were 1-2 months earlier in the lower Colorado. Averaged over a month, as much as 32% of the upper Colorado and 5.5% of the lower Colorado were snow covered. Snow cover persisted longest at higher elevations for both wet and dry years. Interannual variability in snow cover persistence reflected wet-dry year differences. Compared with an operational (binary) SCA product produced by the National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center, the current products classify a lower fraction of pixels as having detectable snow and being cloud covered (5.5% for SCA and 6% for cloud), with greatest differences in January and June in complex, forested terrain. This satellite-derived subpixel determination of snow cover provides the potential for enhanced hydrologic forecast abilities in areas of complex, snow-dominated terrain. As an example, we merged the SCA product with interpolated ground-based snow water equivalent (SWE) to develop a SWE time series. This interpolated, masked SWE peaked in April, after SCA peaked and after some of the lower-elevation snow cover had melted. Copyright 2008 by the American Geophysical Union

Synthetic Double-Stranded RNAs Are Adjuvants for the Induction of T Helper 1 and Humoral Immune Responses to Human Papillomavirus in Rhesus Macaques

Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands are being considered as adjuvants for the induction of antigen-specific immune responses, as in the design of vaccines. Polyriboinosinic-polyribocytoidylic acid (poly I:C), a synthetic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), is recognized by TLR3 and other intracellular receptors. Poly ICLC is a poly I:C analogue, which has been stabilized against the serum nucleases that are present in the plasma of primates. Poly I:C12U, another analogue, is less toxic but also less stable in vivo than poly I:C, and TLR3 is essential for its recognition. To study the effects of these compounds on the induction of protein-specific immune responses in an animal model relevant to humans, rhesus macaques were immunized subcutaneously (s.c.) with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or human papillomavirus (HPV)16 capsomeres with or without dsRNA or a control adjuvant, the TLR9 ligand CpG-C. All dsRNA compounds served as adjuvants for KLH-specific cellular immune responses, with the highest proliferative responses being observed with 2 mg/animal poly ICLC (p = 0.002) or 6 mg/animal poly I:C12U (p = 0.001) when compared with immunization with KLH alone. Notably, poly ICLC—but not CpG-C given at the same dose—also helped to induce HPV16-specific Th1 immune responses while both adjuvants supported the induction of strong anti-HPV16 L1 antibody responses as determined by ELISA and neutralization assay. In contrast, control animals injected with HPV16 capsomeres alone did not develop substantial HPV16-specific immune responses. Injection of dsRNA led to increased numbers of cells producing the T cell–activating chemokines CXCL9 and CXCL10 as detected by in situ hybridization in draining lymph nodes 18 hours after injections, and to increased serum levels of CXCL10 (p = 0.01). This was paralleled by the reduced production of the homeostatic T cell–attracting chemokine CCL21. Thus, synthetic dsRNAs induce an innate chemokine response and act as adjuvants for virus-specific Th1 and humoral immune responses in nonhuman primates

Contribution of Microbe-Mediated Processes in Nitrogen Cycle to Attain Environmental Equilibrium

    Get PDF
Nitrogen (N), the most important element, is required by all living organisms for the synthesis of complex organic molecules like amino acids, proteins, lipids etc. Nitrogen cycle is considered to be the most complex yet arguably important cycle next to carbon cycle. Nitrogen cycle includes oxic and anoxic reactions like organic N mineralization, ammonia assimilation, nitrification denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), comammox, codenitrification etc. Nitrogen cycling is one of the most crucial processes required for the recycling of essential chemical requirements on the planet. Soil microorganisms not only improve N-cycle balance but also pave the way for sustainable agricultural practices, leading to improved soil properties and crop productivity as most plants are opportunistic in the uptake of soluble or available forms of N from soil. Microbial N transformations are influenced by plants to improve their nutrition and vice versa. Diverse microorganisms, versatile metabolic activities, and varied biotic and abiotic conditions may result in the shift in the equilibrium state of different N-cycling processes. This chapter is an overview of the mechanisms and genes involved in the diverse microorganisms associated in the operation of nitrogen cycle and the roles of such microorganisms in different agroecosystems

Variation of Proliferative Activity in Leukemic Cell Populations of Patients with Acute Leukemia

    No full text
In 31 children with acute leukemia, the proliferative activity of the leukemic marrow cell population as measured by mitotic and labeling indexes varied widely from patient to patient and from one disease stage to another. Leukemic marrow had a small but statistically significant diurnal variation of proliferative activity. Changes in labeling indexes were directly related to changes in the proportion of large dividing blasts in the marrow. Generation times of dividing leukemic blast cells in 3 patients were similar at diagnosis and in relapse. Changes in proliferative activity of leukemic marrow can be explained by progressive accumulation of nondividing leukemic cells
