The Repatriation of Italian Prisoners of War from Yugoslavia after the Second World War, 1945–7
Despite the issue of Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War receiving some significant attention, the fate of those prisoners held by the Yugoslav state has not yet been thoroughly examined. This is largely a consequence of the lack of sources, which is also why this issue has been treated superficially in the literature. The present article aims to fill this gap, focusing in particular on the repatriation of Italian prisoners of war held in Yugoslavia after the Second World War. Employing material from archives in the UK, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland, the author will reconstruct the process of repatriation by delving into international diplomatic circumstances and Italo–Yugoslav relations, as well as the political and ideological dynamics which affected the fate of those prisoners. The study will also provide a count of the number of Italian prisoners of war in Yugoslavia, which up to this point has been unclear
Identification of a gene for an ancient cytokine, interleukin 15-like, in mammals; interleukins 2 and 15 co-evolved with this third family member, all sharing binding motifs for IL-15Rα
Interleukins 2 and 15 (IL-2 and IL-15) are highly differentiated but related cytokines with overlapping, yet also distinct functions, and established benefits for medical drug use. The present study identified a gene for an ancient third IL-2/15 family member in reptiles and mammals, interleukin 15-like (IL-15L), which hitherto was only reported in fish. IL-15L genes with intact open reading frames (ORFs) and evidence of transcription, and a recent past of purifying selection, were found for cattle, horse, sheep, pig and rabbit. In human and mouse the IL-15L ORF is incapacitated. Although deduced IL-15L proteins share only ~21 % overall amino acid identity with IL-15, they share many of the IL-15 residues important for binding to receptor chain IL-15Rα, and recombinant bovine IL-15L was shown to interact with IL-15Rα indeed. Comparison of sequence motifs indicates that capacity for binding IL-15Rα is an ancestral characteristic of the IL-2/15/15L family, in accordance with a recent study which showed that in fish both IL-2 and IL-15 can bind IL-15Rα. Evidence reveals that the species lineage leading to mammals started out with three similar cytokines IL-2, IL-15 and IL-15L, and that later in evolution (1) IL-2 and IL-2Rα receptor chain acquired a new and specific binding mode and (2) IL-15L was lost in several but not all groups of mammals. The present study forms an important step forward in understanding this potent family of cytokines, and may help to improve future strategies for their application in veterinarian and human medicine
Effect of dipole-dipole charge interactions on dust coagulation
This study examines the effect that dipole-dipole charge interactions between
fractal aggregates have on the growth of dust grains. Aggregates in a plasma or
radiative environment will have charge distributed over their extended surface,
which leads to a net dipole moment for the charged grains. A self-consistent
N-body code is used to model the dynamics of interacting charged aggregates.
The aggregates are free to rotate due to collisions and dipole-dipole
electrostatic interactions. These rotations are important in determining the
growth rate and subsequent geometry (fractal dimension) of the grains. In
contrast to previous studies which have only taken charge-dipole interactions
into account, like-charged grains are found to coagulate more efficiently than
neutral grains due to preferential incorporation of small aggregates into
mid-sized aggregate structures. The charged aggregates tend to be more compact
than neutral aggregates, characterized by slightly higher fractal dimensions
Learning vector quantization and relevances in complex coefficient space
In this contribution, we consider the classification of time series and similar functional data which can be represented in complex Fourier and wavelet coefficient space. We apply versions of learning vector quantization (LVQ) which are suitable for complex-valued data, based on the so-called Wirtinger calculus. It allows for the formulation of gradient-based update rules in the framework of cost-function-based generalized matrix relevance LVQ (GMLVQ). Alternatively, we consider the concatenation of real and imaginary parts of Fourier coefficients in a real-valued feature vector and the classification of time-domain representations by means of conventional GMLVQ. In addition, we consider the application of the method in combination with wavelet-space features to heartbeat classification
Ethnicity and sexual risk in heterosexual people attending sexual health clinics in England: a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire study.
OBJECTIVES: In the UK, people of black ethnicity experience a disproportionate burden of HIV and STI. We aimed to assess the association of ethnicity with sexual behaviour and sexual health among women and heterosexual men attending genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics in England. METHODS: The Attitudes to and Understanding of Risk of Acquisition of HIV is a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire study of HIV negative people recruited from 20 GUM clinics in England, 2013-2014. Modified Poisson regression with robust SEs was used to calculate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) for the association between ethnicity and various sexual risk behaviours, adjusted for age, study region, education and relationship status. RESULTS: Questionnaires were completed by 1146 individuals, 676 women and 470 heterosexual men. Ethnicity was recorded for 1131 (98.8%) participants: 550 (48.6%) black/mixed African, 168 (14.9%) black/mixed Caribbean, 308 (27.2%) white ethnic groups, 105 (9.3%) other ethnicity. Compared with women from white ethnic groups, black/mixed African women were less likely to report condomless sex with a non-regular partner (aPR (95% CI) 0.67 (0.51 to 0.88)), black/mixed African and black/mixed Caribbean women were less likely to report two or more new partners (0.42 (0.32 to 0.55) and 0.44 (0.29 to 0.65), respectively), and black/mixed Caribbean women were more likely to report an STI diagnosis (1.56 (1.00 to 2.42)). Compared with men from white ethnic groups, black/mixed Caribbean men were more likely to report an STI diagnosis (1.91 (1.20 to 3.04)), but did not report risk behaviours more frequently. Men and women of black/mixed Caribbean ethnicity remained more likely to report STI history after adjustment for sexual risk behaviours. DISCUSSION: Risk behaviours were reported less frequently by women of black ethnicity; however, history of STI was more prevalent among black/mixed Caribbean women. In black/mixed Caribbean men, higher STI history was not explained by ethnic variation in reported risk behaviours. The association between STI and black/mixed Caribbean ethnicity remained after adjustment for risk behaviours
Boro-nitriding coating on pure iron by powder-pack boriding and nitriding processes
To alleviate spallation and crack difficulties exhibited by a borided metallic surface when it is subjected to a normal, heavy and sliding load under dry conditions, a boron nitride coating was produced on pure iron in two stages: boriding the iron surface at 950 °C for 6 h and then nitriding the pre-borided iron at 550 °C for 6 h. The powder-pack technique was used in both stages. XRD measurements confirmed that the grown layers were nitrides and duplex borides. The produced diffusion of the layers reached 240 µm in depth as measured by SEM images. The measured microhardness across the case favoured the interphase cohesion between the iron nitrides and iron borides layers. Consequently, the multicomponent coating exhibited superior wear resistance to an applied normal load under dry sliding contact conditions in comparison to borided iron
Higgs production as a probe of anomalous top couplings
The LHC may be currently seeing the first hints of the Higgs boson. The
dominant production mode for the Higgs at the LHC involves a top-quark loop. An
accurate measurement of Higgs production cross-sections and decay widths can
thus be used to obtain limits on anomalous top couplings. We find that such an
exercise could potentially yield constraints that are stronger than those
derived from low-energy observables as well as direct bounds expected from the
top pair-production process.Comment: Version published in JHE
Leptoproduction of Heavy Quarks II -- A Unified QCD Formulation of Charged and Neutral Current Processes from Fixed-target to Collider Energies
A unified QCD formulation of leptoproduction of massive quarks in charged
current and neutral current processes is described. This involves adopting
consistent factorization and renormalization schemes which encompass both
vector-boson-gluon-fusion (flavor creation) and
vector-boson-massive-quark-scattering (flavor excitation) production
mechanisms. It provides a framework which is valid from the threshold for
producing the massive quark (where gluon-fusion is dominant) to the very high
energy regime when the typical energy scale \mu is much larger than the quark
mass m_Q (where the quark-scattering should be prevalent). This approach
effectively resums all large logarithms of the type (alpha_s(mu)
log(mu^2/m_Q^2)^n which limit the validity of existing fixed-order calculations
to the region mu ~ O(m_Q). We show that the (massive) quark-scattering
contribution (after subtraction of overlaps) is important in most parts of the
(x, Q) plane except near the threshold region. We demonstrate that the
factorization scale dependence of the structure functions calculated in this
approach is substantially less than those obtained in the fixed-order
