Using step width to compare locomotor biomechanics between extinct, non-avian theropod dinosaurs and modern obligate bipeds
How extinct, non-avian theropod dinosaurs locomoted is a subject of considerable interest, as is the manner in which it evolved on the line leading to birds. Fossil footprints provide the most direct evidence for answering these questions. In this study, step width—the mediolateral (transverse) distance between successive footfalls—was investigated with respect to speed (stride length) in non-avian theropod trackways of Late Triassic age. Comparable kinematic data were also collected for humans and 11 species of ground-dwelling birds. Permutation tests of the slope on a plot of step width against stride length showed that step width decreased continuously with increasing speed in the extinct theropods (p < 0.001), as well as the five tallest bird species studied (p < 0.01). Humans, by contrast, showed an abrupt decrease in step width at the walk–run transition. In the modern bipeds, these patterns reflect the use of either a discontinuous locomotor repertoire, characterized by distinct gaits (humans), or a continuous locomotor repertoire, where walking smoothly transitions into running (birds). The non-avian theropods are consequently inferred to have had a continuous locomotor repertoire, possibly including grounded running. Thus, features that characterize avian terrestrial locomotion had begun to evolve early in theropod history

Passion fruit chlorotic mottle virus: molecular characterization of a new divergent geminivirus in Brazil.
Brazil is one of the major passion fruit producers worldwide. Viral diseases are among the most important constraints for passion fruit production. Here we identify and characterize a new passion fruit infecting-virus belonging to the family Geminiviridae: passion fruit chlorotic mottle virus (PCMoV). PCMoV is a divergent geminivirus unlike previously characterized passion fruit-infecting geminiviruses that belonged to the genus Begomovirus. Among the presently known geminiviruses, it is most closely related to, and shares ~62% genome-wide identity with citrus chlorotic dwarf associated virus (CCDaV) and camelia chlorotic dwarf associated virus (CaCDaV). The 3743 nt PCMoV genome encodes a capsid protein (CP) and replication-associated protein (Rep) that respectively share 56 and 60% amino acid identity with those encoded by CaCDaV. The CPs of PCMoV, CCDaV, and CaCDaV cluster with those of begomovirus whereas their Reps with those of becurtoviruses. Hence, these viruses likely represent a lineage of recombinant begomo-like and becurto-like ancestral viruses. Furthermore, PCMoV, CCDaV, and CaCDaV genomes are ~12–30% larger than monopartite geminiviruses and this is primarily due to the encoded movement protein (MP; 891–921 nt) and this MP is most closely related to that encoded by the DNA-B component of bipartite begomoviruses. Hence, PCMoV, CCDaV, and CaCDaV lineage of viruses may represent molecules in an intermediary step in the evolution of bipartite begomoviruses (~5.3 kb) from monopartite geminiviruses (~2.7–3 kb). An infectious clone of PCMoV systemically infected Nicotiana benthamina, Arabidopsis thaliana, and Passiflora edulis
Meson and di-electron production with HADES
The HADES experiment, installed at GSI, Darmstadt, measures di-electron
production in A+A, p/pi+N and p/pi+A collisions. Here, the pi0 and eta Dalitz
decays have been reconstructed in the exclusive p+p reaction at 2.2 GeV to form
a reference cocktail for long-lived di-electron sources. In the C+C reaction at
1 and 2 GeV/u, these long-lived sources have been subtracted from the measured
inclusive e+e- yield to exhibit the signal from the early phase of the
collision. The results suggest that resonances play an important role in dense
nuclear matter.Comment: Invited plenary talk at the 10th International Workshop On Meson

Spontaneous breaking of four-fold rotational symmetry in two-dimensional electronic systems explained as a continuous topological transition
The Fermi liquid approach is applied to the problem of spontaneous violation
of the four-fold rotational point-group symmetry () in strongly correlated
two-dimensional electronic systems on a square lattice. The symmetry breaking
is traced to the existence of a topological phase transition. This continuous
transition is triggered when the Fermi line, driven by the quasiparticle
interactions, reaches the van Hove saddle points, where the group velocity
vanishes and the density of states becomes singular. An unconventional Fermi
liquid emerges beyond the implicated quantum critical point.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Inclusive Dielectron Production in Ar+KCl Collisions at 1.76 AGeV studied with HADES
Results of the HADES measurement of inclusive dielectron production in Ar+KCl
collisions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.76 AGeV are presented. For the first
time, high mass resolution spectroscopy was performed. The invariant mass
spectrum of dielectrons is compared with predictions of UrQMD and HSD transport
codes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures - To appear in the conference proceedings for
