Conflict, Cooperation, and the Creation of the Postcolonial African Regional Order, 1957-1963
This thesis is a work of International History and an investigation of the birth of inter-African relations from Ghana’s Independence in March 1957 to the establishment in May 1963 of Africa’s first and wholly owned political organisation, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa. The OAU’s foundation charter was and still stands as the first and longest-lasting unanimously approved agreement by African states in post-colonial African history. Its real historical importance, this thesis contends, is its contribution to the formal adoption of the lasting nation-state system in Africa as all signatories gave their unanimous support to the sanctity of their states’ right to sovereignty. This thesis therefore uncovers the grand strategies and ensuing diplomacy of three African states – Ghana, Egypt, and Senegal – during their decolonization period and charts the changing course of these states’ policies as diplomatic rifts emerged over how to reach the goal of unity. This period of African history thus saw mass propaganda campaigns, massive political interference in the affairs of other states, and several attempts by leaders to undermine other African regimes to the point of assassination, which situates this period as an African continent and its OAU as not looking outward, but inward. The long road to the foundation of the OAU was therefore the moment when a postcolonial African Regional Order was established where the rules of the game regulating inter-African relations were codified.Cambridge Trust, St John's College Benefactors' Scholarshi
(2SR,4aSR,8aSR)-6-OxoperhydroÂnaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid
In the title racemic compound, C11H16O3, the molÂecule adopts a conformation that places its carboxyl group in an equatorial position. MolÂecules aggregate by hydrogen-bond pairing of carboxyl groups, yielding centrosymmetric dimers that are arranged into layers in the (020) planes
This article offers a critical synthesis of the knowledge obtained in the wake of the work of the Comite d’experts sur l’apprentissage de l’écriture (Committee of experts on learning to write), which published a report entitled, « Mieux soutenir le développement de la compétence à écrire » (Better Support for the Development of Writing Skills) in January 2008. The synthesis focused on scientific texts that deal with the practice of electronic blog writing in elementary and high school classrooms. The period covered extends from January 2004 to May 2010. Results indicate that a blog’s contexts of use can favour students’ motivation to write, add authenticity to the writing process, and lead students to produce numerous texts. The qualitative aspect of these texts, however, has been little discussed until now. In light of the compiled texts, conceptual and methodological considerations are also proposed as potential avenues for future research
Rank-based Estimation under Asymptotic Dependence and Independence, with Applications to Spatial Extremes
Multivariate extreme value theory is concerned with modeling the joint tail
behavior of several random variables. Existing work mostly focuses on
asymptotic dependence, where the probability of observing a large value in one
of the variables is of the same order as observing a large value in all
variables simultaneously. However, there is growing evidence that asymptotic
independence is equally important in real world applications. Available
statistical methodology in the latter setting is scarce and not well understood
theoretically. We revisit non-parametric estimation and introduce rank-based
M-estimators for parametric models that simultaneously work under asymptotic
dependence and asymptotic independence, without requiring prior knowledge on
which of the two regimes applies. Asymptotic normality of the proposed
estimators is established under weak regularity conditions. We further show how
bivariate estimators can be leveraged to obtain parametric estimators in
spatial tail models, and again provide a thorough theoretical justification for
our approach.Comment: 64 pages, 16 figure
"School Strike 4 Climate": Social Media and the International Youth Protest on Climate Change
Beginning in 2018, youth across the globe participated in protest activities aimed at encouraging government action on climate change. This activism was initiated and led by Swedish teenager, Greta Thunberg. Like other contemporary movements, the School Strike 4 Climate used social media. For this article, we use Twitter trace data to examine the global dynamics of the student strike on March 15, 2019. We offer a nuanced analysis of 993 tweets, employing a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Like other movements, the primary function of these tweets was to share information, but we highlight a unique type of information shared in these tweets - documentation of local events across the globe. We also examine opinions shared about youth, the tactic (protest/strike), and climate change, as well as the assignment of blame on government and other institutions for their inaction and compliance in the climate crisis. This global climate strike reflects a trend in international protest events, which are connected through social media and other digital media tools. More broadly, it allows us to rethink how social media platforms are transforming political engagement by offering actors - especially the younger generation - agency through the ability to voice their concerns to a global audience
3-AcetylÂbenzoic acid
In the crystal structure of the title compound, C9H8O3, essentially planar molÂecules [the carboxyl group makes a dihedral angle of 4.53 (7)° with the plane of the ring, while the acid group forms a dihedral angle of 3.45 (8)° to the ring] aggregate by centrosymmetric hydrogen-bond pairing of ordered carboxyl groups. This yields dimers which have two orientations in a unit cell, creating a herringbone pattern. In addition, two close C—H⋯O interÂmolecular contacts exist: one is between a methyl H atom and the ketone of a symmetry-related molÂecule and the other involves a benzene H atom and the carboxyl group O atom of another molÂecule. The crystal studied was a non-merohedral twin with twin law [100, 00, 0] and a domain ratio of 0.8104(14): 0.1896(14)
