Copper(I)-Phosphinite Complexes in Click Cycloadditions: Three-Component Reactions and Preparation of 5-Iodotriazoles

KGaA.The remarkable activity displayed by copper(I)–phosphinite complexes of general formula [CuBr(L)] in two challenging cycloadditions is reported: a) the one-pot azidonation/cycloaddition of boronic acids, NaN3, and terminal alkynes; b) the cycloaddition of azides and iodoalkynes. These air-stable catalysts led to very good results in both cases and the expected triazoles could be isolated in pure form under ‘Click-suitable’ conditions
Transport through constricted quantum Hall edge systems: beyond the quantum point contact
Motivated by surprises in recent experimental findings, we study transport in
a model of a quantum Hall edge system with a gate-voltage controlled
constriction. A finite backscattered current at finite edge-bias is explained
from a Landauer-Buttiker analysis as arising from the splitting of edge current
caused by the difference in the filling fractions of the bulk () and
constriction () quantum Hall fluid regions. We develop a hydrodynamic
theory for bosonic edge modes inspired by this model. The constriction region
splits the incident long-wavelength chiral edge density-wave excitations among
the transmitting and reflecting edge states encircling it. The competition
between two interedge tunneling processes taking place inside the constriction,
related by a quasiparticle-quasihole (qp-qh) symmetry, is accounted for by
computing the boundary theories of the system. This competition is found to
determine the strong coupling configuration of the system. A separatrix of
qp-qh symmetric gapless critical states is found to lie between the relevant RG
flows to a metallic and an insulating configuration of the constriction system.
This constitutes an interesting generalisation of the Kane-Fisher quantum
impurity model. The features of the RG phase diagram are also confirmed by
computing various correlators and chiral linear conductances of the system. In
this way, our results find excellent agreement with many recent puzzling
experimental results for the cases of . We also discuss and
make predictions for the case of a constriction system with .Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Inter-hemispheric electroencephalography coherence analysis: Assessing brain activity during monotonous driving
The current study investigated the effect of monotonous driving on inter-hemispheric electroencephalography (EEG) coherence. Twenty-four non-professional drivers were recruited to perform a fatigue instigating monotonous driving task while 30 channels of EEG were simultaneously recorded. The EEG recordings were then divided into 5 equal sections over the entire driving period for analysis. Inter-hemispheric coherence was computed from 5 homologous EEG electrode pairs (FP1-FP2, C3-C4, T7-T8, P7-P8, and O1-O2) for delta, theta, alpha and beta frequency bands. Results showed that frontal and occipital inter-hemispheric coherence values were significantly higher than central, parietal, and temporal sites for all four frequency bands (p< 0.0001). In the alpha frequency band, significant difference was found between earlier and later driving sections (p= 0.02). The coherence values in all EEG frequency bands were slightly increased at the end of the driving session, except for FP1-FP2 electrode pair, which showed no significant change in coherence in the beta frequency band at the end of the driving session. © 2010 Elsevier B.V
Uncovering Bugs in Distributed Storage Systems during Testing (not in Production!)
Testing distributed systems is challenging due to multiple sources of nondeterminism. Conventional testing techniques, such as unit, integration and stress testing, are ineffective in preventing serious but subtle bugs from reaching production. Formal techniques, such as TLA+, can only verify high-level specifications of systems at the level of logic-based models, and fall short of checking the actual executable code. In this paper, we present a new methodology for testing distributed systems. Our approach applies advanced systematic testing techniques to thoroughly check that the executable code adheres to its high-level specifications, which significantly improves coverage of important system behaviors. Our methodology has been applied to three distributed storage systems in the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform. In the process, numerous bugs were identified, reproduced, confirmed and fixed. These bugs required a subtle combination of concurrency and failures, making them extremely difficult to find with conventional testing techniques. An important advantage of our approach is that a bug is uncovered in a small setting and witnessed by a full system trace, which dramatically increases the productivity of debugging

The marine mammals of Indian seas are attracting special attention due to the declaration of Indian Ocean as a sanctuary for the whales. Though whales and dolphins do not form a regular fishery along the coasts of India, there is no place for complacency as dolphins and dugongs are caught in the gill nets along the coasts
Fatigue detection using computer vision
Long duration driving is a significant cause of fatigue related accidents of cars, airplanes, trains and other means of transport. This paper presents a design of a detection system which can be used to detect fatigue in drivers. The system is based on computer vision with main focus on eye blink rate. We propose an algorithm for eye detection that is conducted through a process of extracting the face image from the video image followed by evaluating the eye region and then eventually detecting the iris of the eye using the binary image. The advantage of this system is that the algorithm works without any constraint of the background as the face is detected using a skin segmentation technique. The detection performance of this system was tested using video images which were recorded under laboratory conditions. The applicability of the system is discussed in light of fatigue detection for drivers
