Nuclear motion in molecular ions studied with synchrotron radiation and multicoincidence momentum imaging spectrometry
A momentum imaging spectrometer optimized for photoionization experiments with synchrotron radiation was built in 2008. The spectrometer is equipped with an electrostatic lens, that focuses the charged dissociation products on to a position-sensitive multi-hit delay line anode. The possibility of focusing is essential for most applications, where fragment momentum is to be extracted. The apparatus is equipped with a micro-channel-plate detector opposite to the delay line anode, enabling electron-ion coincidence experiments and thereby mass-resolved ion spectroscopy independent of the time structure of the synchrotron radiation. Calibration and characterization of the instrument is explained. Results for the photo-fragmentation of several molecules are presented, including measurements of kinetic and angular distributions as well as momentum correlations between coincident fragments. Various data analysis methods are described. High sensitivity of the instrument enables detection and analysis of weak processes such as isomerization. Full three-dimensional momentum information for each coincidence event is achieved which allows for in depth understanding of geometry, dynamics and energetics. In Ethyne, molecules with a cis-bending motion has been identified. In carbonyl sulfide and carbon dioxide, the Renner-Teller splitting has been analyzed. For the water molecule, transient isomerization has been found to be induced by strong bending vibrations in core-excited states. Also studies have been made on clusters, displaying the capability of the instrument to measure a large range of masses and kinetic energies
Prediction of outcome after abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture
This thesis aims to examine the validity of existing tools recommended for outcome prediction
after abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture and to design and validate a novel risk scoring
instrument. It also aims to examine the utility of novel predictive variables. Finally, it examines
the functional outcomes achieved by survivors of aneurysm rupture.Existing risk models and predictive variables for outcome were validated on a retrospective
cohort of consecutive patients with ruptured AAA. These data were also used to design a novel
prognostic index for outcome prediction. A prospective cohort of consecutive patients was used
to further validate these scoring systems, examine novel prognostic variables and determine
functional outcome.Existing risk scoring instruments for patients with ruptured AAA lack validity. Analysis of
preoperative variables in patients with ruptured AAA shows that absolute surgical futility cannot
be predicted. However, in-hospital hypotension (<90mmHg), reduced Glasgow Coma Scale (<15)
and anaemia (<9g/dL) are associated with perioperative death. When these risk factors are equally
weighted and combined to create a novel risk scoring instrument (Edinburgh Ruptured Aneurysm
Score-ERAS), three discriminatory tiers of risk are demonstrable. The validity of this risk
instrument is confirmed on prospective data. Examination of novel perioperative prognostic
variables shows that elevated cardiac troponin I, with or without clinically apparent cardiac
dysfunction, is predictive of death after ruptured AAA repair. However, although ruptured AAA
are associated with an early elevation in inflammatory biomarkers, these do not appear to confer
additional prognostic value. Furthermore, for the first time, prospective study shows that patients
who survive ruptured AAA repair achieve a good recovery in terms of functional outcome within
six months of operation.Surgical futility cannot be predicted prior to operation in patients with AAA. However, the ERAS
shows potential as a preoperative prognostic index in patients with ruptured AAA
MEDIA FRAMING ON ONLINE NEWS HEADLINES IN REGARDS TO THE GILETS JAUNES PHENOMENON
Gilets Jaunes massive protest in France was considered as the most serious crisis in the Fifth Republic since the protest of May 1968. The importance of the event was such that it generated serious controversy, which was widely reported and many French media competed to highlight the development of the action group. This study examines the headlines of the Gilets Jaunes phenomenon in two online news sites (LeFigaro.fr and Libération.fr) with a different ideology. The analysis was carried out using theories of Le Querler's syntactic structure, Nida's meaning componential analysis, Dor & Gattani's headline functionality, and Entman's media framing. The results show that left-wing media news titles framed Gilets Jaunes as evidence of the people's struggle, while the right-wing media framed Gilets Jaunes as an action that only caused riots and casualties
The construction and meaning of EasyJet airline 2016 advertisements
EasyJet, a UK low-cost airline service provider launched several attractive advertisements to attract consumers' interest, one of which is a series of posters issued in 2016. These posters are interesting because the words show complex morphological processes and implied meanings that can be extracted. Previous studies have mostly examined morphological formation or have conducted semiotic studies, but none have linked morphological processes and images on posters with a semiotic approach. Therefore, this study analyzes the word formation process in the 2016 EasyJet advertisement, which has undergone a derivation process, and finds out the meaning contained in the advertisement using a semiotic approach. This qualitative study examines the posters based on Lehmann and Berthetâs (2018) theory of word formation and Barthes' (2013) semiotics theory. The result of this study indicates that in this advertising poster, EasyJet attracts people to use its services in several market segments or consumer groups according to their respective characteristics. The stratagem revealed through these posters is that EasyJet is an airline that wants to invite its prospective passengers to explore new activities.
The role of charge and proton transfer in fragmentation of hydrogen-bonded nanosystems: the breakup of ammonia clusters upon single photon multi-ionization
The charge and proton dynamics in hydrogen-bonded networks are investigated
using ammonia as a model system. The fragmentation dynamics of medium-sized
clusters (1-2 nm) upon single photon multi-ionization is studied, by analyzing
the momenta of small ionic fragments. The observed fragmentation pattern of the
doubly- and triply- charged clusters reveals a spatial anisotropy of emission
between fragments (back-to-back). Protonated fragments exhibit a distinct
kinematic correlation, indicating a delay between ionization and fragmentation
(fission). The different kinematics observed for channels containing protonated
and unprotonated species provides possible insights into the prime mechanisms
of charge and proton transfer, as well as proton hopping, in such a nanoscale
system.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
