    Elastic Platonic Shells

    On microscopic scales, the crystallinity of flexible tethered or cross-linked membranes determines their mechanical response. We show that by controlling the type, number, and distribution of defects on a spherical elastic shell, it is possible to direct the morphology of these structures. Our numerical simulations show that by deflating a crystalline shell with defects, we can create elastic shell analogs of the classical platonic solids. These morphologies arise via a sharp buckling transition from the sphere which is strongly hysteretic in loading or unloading. We construct a minimal Landau theory for the transition using quadratic and cubic invariants of the spherical harmonic modes.     Designer peptides to understand the mineralization of calcium salts

    Recently, we reported the extraction, purification and amino acid sequence of ansocalcin, the major goose eggshell matrix protein. In vitro studies showed that ansocalcin induces spherical calcite crystal aggregates. We designed two peptides using the unique features of the sequence of ansocalcin and the role of these peptides in CaCO₃ crystallization was investigated. The peptides showed similar activities as compared to ansocalcin, but at a higher concentration.     Quality of diabetes care worldwide and feasibility of implementation of the Alphabet Strategy : GAIA project (Global Alphabet Strategy Implementation Audit)

    Backfround: The Alphabet Strategy (AS) is a diabetes care checklist ensuring "important, simple things are done right all the time." Current audits of diabetes care in developed countries reveal wide variations in quality with performance of care processes frequently sub-optimal. This study had three components: an audit to assess diabetes care quality worldwide, a questionnaire study seeking opinions on the merits of the AS, a pilot study to assess the practicality of implementation of the AS in a low socioeconomic setting. Methods: Audit data was collected from 52 centres across 32 countries. Data from 4537 patients were converted to Quality and Outcome Framework (QOF) scores to enable inter-centre comparison. These were compared to each country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and Total Health Expenditure percentage per capita (THE%). The opinions of diabetes patients and healthcare professionals from the diabetes care team at each of these centres were sought through a structured questionnaire. A retrospective audit on 100 randomly selected case notes was conducted prior to AS implementation in a diabetes outpatient clinic in India, followed by a prospective audit after four months to assess its impact on care quality. Results: QOF scores showed wide variation across the centres (mean 49.0, range 10.2-90.1). Although there was a positive relationship between GDP and THE% to QOF scores, there were exceptions. 91% of healthcare professionals felt the AS approach was practical. Patients found the checklist to be a useful education tool. Significant improvements in several aspects of care as well as 36% improvement in QOF score were seen following implementation. Conclusions: International centres observed large variations in care quality, with standards frequently sub-optimal. 71% of health care professionals would consider adopting the AS in their daily practice. Implementation in a low resource country resulted in significant improvements in some aspects of diabetes care. The AS checklist for diabetes care is a freely available in the public domain encompassing patient education, care plans, and educational resources for healthcare professionals including summary guidelines. The AS may provide a unique approach in delivering high quality diabetes care in countries with limited resources

    Eggshell Matrix Protein Mimetics: Elucidation of Molecular Mechanism of Goose Eggshell Calcification using Designed Peptides

    Model peptides were designed, synthesized and conducted a detailed structure-property study to unravel the molecular mechanism of goose eggshell calcification. The peptides were designed based on the primary structural features of the eggshell matrix proteins ansocalcin and OC-17. In vitro CaCO₃ crystal growth experiments in presence of these peptides showed calcite crystal aggregation as observed in the case of the parent protein ansocalcin. The structure of these peptides in solution was established using intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence studies and quasi-elastic light scattering experiments.     Defects in Friction Stir Welding of Steel

    Defects associated with friction stir welding of two steel grades including DH36 and EH46 were investigated. Different welding parameters including tool rotational and tool traverse (linear) speeds were applied to understand their effect on weld seam defects including microcracks and voids formation. SEM images and infinite focus microscopy were employed to identify the defects types. Two new defects associated with the friction stir welding process are introduced in this work. The first defect identified in this work is a microcrack found between the plunge and the steady state region and attributed to the traverse moving of the tool with unsuitable speed from the plunge-dwell to the steady state stage. The tool traverse speed has recommended to travel 20 mm more with accelerated velocity range of 0.1 from the maximum traverse speed until reaching the steady state. The maximum recommended traverse speed in the steady state was also suggested to be less than 400 mm/min in order to avoid the lack in material flow. The second type of defect observed in this work was microcracks inside the stirred zone caused by elemental precipitations of TiN. The precipitates of TiN were attributed to the high tool rotational speed which caused the peak temperature to exceed 1200 °C at the top of the stirred zone and based on previous work. The limit of tool rotational speed was recommended to be maintained in the range of 200-500 RPM based on the mechanical experiments on the FSW samples
