Many zoos around the world are held to an increasingly higher standard for animal welfare. It has become evident that people want animals not only to be protected from suffering but thrive in captivity and have all their needs met, both physically and mentally. Environmental and food-based enrichments can be a great help in achieving this. The goal with this study was to examine if food-based enrichments would be something that two species of macropods interacted with and to see if it could be considered to prolong the feeding time, as feeding and searching for food takes up a lot of these animals’ time in the wild. The aim was also to see if aggressive behaviors were to be found among the animals at feeding time and to examine the exact nature of these aggressions. Macropods are native to Australia but are now common in zoos and zoological gardens all over the world. Two of the more common species to keep in captivity are the ones featured in this study; Western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) and red-necked or Bennet’s wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus). Few studies have been conducted on these species in captivity as they are regarded by many as easy animals to keep and they do not seem prone to the more common types of stereotypic behaviour. In this study, three food-based enrichments were tested on 8 kangaroos and 16 wallabies that lived together in a mixed-species enclosure. Each enrichment was tested on four consecutive days and a note was made on 1, how many animals of both species were touching the enrichment, 2, how many animals of both species were inside a 2-meter radius of the enrichment and 3, what aggressive behaviors were shown and what species was involved, meaning who was the agitator and who was the receiver of aggressive behavior. The study shows that both species used or went near all three enrichments. One of the enrichments, the geen Slow Feeder, was the enrichment that the highest number of animals of both species interacted with. It also had the lowest number of aggression relative to the number of animals that interacted with it. The wallabies tended to show more aggressive behaviors toward each other as well as toward the kangaroos. The kangaroos on the other hand showed very little inter-species aggression. Even though few enrichments were tested, and few animals were involved in this study it could still be used as a basis for further studies of enrichment-options for macropods in captivity

    Repositioning UK Partnerships Post-Brexit

On such a divisive issue as European Union (EU) membership and consequently the post-Brexit relationship between the United Kingdom and the EU, it is unsurprising that Theresa May’s government has been torn between a hard and soft Brexit. As of June 2018, there is still no indication of which approach will prevail, putting at risk UK universities’ participation in the Erasmus+ programme, which has provided, amongst other things, opportunities for over four million Europeans to study, train, and volunteer abroad since its inception. Full access to EU research funds is also at risk. Universities cannot depend on the UK government’s help in securing the frameworks allowing for continuity. In such a context, universities have started to use their limited resources to secure bilateral international and European links to foster research collaboration and both staff and student mobility, post-Brexit

Patients with neurological disease can take advantage of multidisciplinary work and improve his/her quality of life. Among the former (existing) neurological pathologies, the 4 most commonly found in Spain have been selected: Ictus, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis. The Guides of Clinical Practice (GCP) are an easy tool for professionals to use as well as other people, and that is why we try to evaluate whether they can be recommended by the AGREE protocol and by reviewing the importance given to the role of the therapist. Methodology: An investigation was launched to decide GCP within the most frequent neurologic pathologies, relevance of the occupational therapist in the selected guides, and after that the quality of the selected guides through the AGREE protocol. Results: Eight guides in total have been reviewed. To consider whether or not the guide was recommended or not, level of achievement of 60% was established as the cut point acceptable for each domain. Domains that scored lower were: People Involved Participation, Editorial Independence, and Scope and Objectives. The therapist's role in the selected guides was analyzed, and in 6 of the guides the therapist’s role was as significant as the other professionals. Conclusion: The GCPs must be better known, so for this reason there should be free access to each of the guides, as well as free access to more portals as Guia Salud that provide more reliability to the content and meet actualization data, and not cause variability in clinical practices. On the other hand, after reviewing the guide, the therapist’s role has been significant

David Tomasi presents new, groundbreaking research on the science and application of Mind-Body Medicine strategies to improve clinical outcomes in inpatient psychiatry settings. Much more than a list of therapeutic recommendations, this book is a thorough description of how Mind-Body Medicine can be successfully applied, from a therapeutic as well as from an organizational, cost-effective analysis viewpoint, to the full spectrum of psychiatric treatments. Furthermore, this study examines the role of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary treatment teams, with a special focus on the profession and the role of psychotherapists and group therapists, thereby providing solid scientific evidence of the benefits of patient-provider therapeutic alliances. In this sense, this book serves as a guide for professionals and institutions both in the private and the public sphere, to learn effective treatment and management strategies. About the Author Psychotherapist, Researcher, and Philosopher Dr. David Låg Tomasi is the author of Medical Philosophy (ibidem, 2016) and the co-author of Positive Patient Response to a Structured Exercise Program Delivered in Inpatient Psychiatry (Global Advances in Health and Medicine, 2019), the most-read research item from the University of Vermont (Researchgate, 2019). Click-PEGylation - a mobility shift approach to assess the redox state of cysteines in candidate proteins

The redox state of cysteine thiols is critical for protein function. Whereas cysteines play an important role in the maintenance of protein structure through the formation of internal disulfides, their nucleophilic thiol groups can become oxidatively modified in response to diverse redox challenges and thereby function in signalling and antioxidant defences. These oxidative modifications occur in response to a range of agents and stimuli, and can lead to the existence of multiple redox states for a given protein. To assess the role(s) of a protein in redox signalling and antioxidant defence, it is thus vital to be able to assess which of the multiple thiol redox states are present and to investigate how these alter under different conditions. While this can be done by a range of mass spectrometric-based methods, these are time-consuming, costly, and best suited to study abundant proteins or to perform an unbiased proteomic screen. One approach that can facilitate a targeted assessment of candidate proteins, as well as proteins that are low in abundance or proteomically challenging, is by electrophoretic mobility shift assays. Redox-modified cysteine residues are selectively tagged with a large group, such as a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer, and then the proteins are separated by electrophoresis followed by immunoblotting, which allows the inference of redox changes based on band shifts. However, the applicability of this method has been impaired by the difficulty of cleanly modifying protein thiols by large PEG reagents. To establish a more robust method for redox-selective PEGylation, we have utilised a Click chemistry approach, where free thiol groups are first labelled with a reagent modified to contain an alkyne moiety, which is subsequently Click-reacted with a PEG molecule containing a complementary azide function. This strategy can be adapted to study reversibly reduced or oxidised cysteines. Separation of the thiol labelling step from the PEG conjugation greatly facilitates the fidelity and flexibility of this approach. Here we show how the Click-PEGylation technique can be used to interrogate the redox state of proteins
