    Agricultural Arbitrage, Adjustment Costs, and the Intensive Margin

    Farmland and capital are an important and rapidly expanding component of the agricultural economy, and empirical evidence suggests that these assets are quasi-fixed in that adjustment costs are incurred when holdings are altered. Increased interest in the rate of return for investing in farmland suggests that an important consideration is the effect of adjustment costs on this return. A novel theoretical model is developed that ties together contributions from the farmland pricing and adjustment cost literatures, and the first order conditions for a utility maximizing decision maker are rearranged into intertemporal arbitrage equations that are similar in spirit to traditional finance models. The common assumptions that land and capital are quasi-fixed assets, and that production is characterized by constant returns to scale are tested and the evidence supports these assumptions. An empirical application of the arbitrage equations provides evidence that risk aversion and adjustment costs are jointly significant components of agricultural production, and that adjustment costs generate significant changes in the rate of return to farmland. The results have important policy implications as sluggish supply response due to quasi-fixity can lead to dramatically inflated commodity prices, and an accurate measure of the farmland return can help determine how far the extensive margin will expand or contract in response to a variety of policy scenarios, such as the subsidization of corn for ethanol, an increase in the variety of subsidized crop insurance products, or the introduction of new revenue support programs such as ACRE.Arbitrage, Adjustment Costs, Farmland, Asset Pricing, Capital, Cost Function, Risk, Production, Agricultural Finance, Consumer/Household Economics, Crop Production/Industries, Farm Management, Financial Economics, Land Economics/Use, Production Economics, Risk and Uncertainty,

    Adsorption du pentachlorophenol sur divers matériaux : Influence de co-adsorbats organiques (Substances humiques et lindane)

    Nous avons réalisé, pour de faibles concentrations, l'étude de l'adsoprtion d'un pesticide le pentachlorophénol, sur plusieurs matériaux adsorbants : le charbon actif, la kaolinite et la bentone. Les résultats montrent que l'adsorption du pentachlorophénol sur la kaolinite reste négligeable tandis que la bentone SD-3 (argile traitée) permet d'obtenir des résultats intéressants avec toutefois une capacité maximale d'adsorption 10 à 100 fois plus faible que celle du charbon actif. Le charbon actif reste le meilleur matériau adsorbant pour le pentachlorophénol. La solubilité de ce composé étant très variable en fonction du pH du milieu on constate que l'adsorption du pentachlorophénol-pentachlorophénate (5 mg.l-1) diminue pour des valeurs de pH supérieures au pKa du couple acide-base que nous avons déterminé expérimentalement, égal à 5,9 ± 0,1. L'adsorption du pentachlorophénol n'est pas affectée par la présence d'acides humiques (obtenus à partir de substances commerciales) utilisés comme coadsorbats (10 mg.l-1) alors que les acides fulviques (20 mg.l-1) extraits de sols semblent provoquer une promotion de l'adsorption. On observe d'autre part que le pentachlorophénol n'affecte pas l'adsorption des acides humiques mais augmente légèrement celle des acides fulviques. Ces remarques suggèrent la possible formation d'un complexe acides fulviques-pentachlorophénol. Lorsqu'on utilise le lindane, pesticide hydrophobe comme coadsorbat (165 mg.l-1), on observe encore d'une façon systématique pour tous les nombreux essais une légère promotion de l'adsorption.Adsorption studies for the removal of the pesticide pentachlorophenol found in a number of water supplies (BELAMIE and GIROUD, 1986) were carried out using various materials including kaolinite, bentone SD-3 and powdered activated carbon (WEBER and GOULD, 1966; WEBER and JODELHAH, 1985). It was found that adsorption on kaolinite was negligible, whereas bentone SD-3 presented and adsorption efficiency from 10 to 100-fold less than equivalent quantities of powdered activated carbon (LOTSE et al., 1968; SHAROM et al., 1980). The effect of the pH on the removal of pentachlorophenol by activated carbon was studied. The removal efficiency of pentachlorophenol by activated carbon is better in acidic media. A clear dependence of adsorption on the pH appeared to be the result of a marked variation of the pesticide solubility as a function of the pH (fig. 3). Adsorption of pentachlorophenol/phenate (5mg.l-1) diminishes markedly at pH values above the pKa of this weak acid (that we found equal to 5,9 ± 0,1) when the pentachlorophenol exists almost entirely in ionic form in aqueous solution, and is enhanced at low pH when the percentage of molecular species (whose concentration can be determined from pKa value) becomes significant (WARD and GETZEN, 1970). These remarks and the adsorptive capacities (163 mg.g-1= 0,6 mmol.g-1 at pH = 5,2 and 79 mg.g-1 0,3 mmol.g-1 at pH =12,7), suggest a П-П interaction between pentachlorophenol and activated carbon which seems to be confirmed by the results with bentone SD-3 (tables 1 to 4), and the values of the electrokinetic potential of these materials. This study emphasizes the effect of organic coadsorbates (e.g., dissolved humic substances and the pesticide lindane) on the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for pentachlorophenol. Two different natural organic matters were studied as coadsorbates : purified humic acids from a commercial source (at 10 mg.l-1) and fulvic acids extracted from a top soil horizon (et 20 mg.l-1) (SCHNITZER and SKINNER, 1963; THURMAN and MALCOLM, 1981). Pentachlorophenol adsorption was not affected by humic acids, whereas an increase of adsorption seemed to be observed in the presence of fulvic acids (fig. 6). Pentachlorophenol does not affect the adsorption of humic acids, but improves slightly the removal of fulvic acids. This suggests an association between the two kinds of organic compounds (WERSNAW et al., 1969; KHAN, 1972; OGNER and SCHNITZER, 1970), the resulting « complex », fulvic acids/pentachlorophenol, being more adsorbed than the compounds themselves. The coadsorbate lindane (0,65 mg.l-1) which is easily adsorbed by activated carton (GOMELLA and BELLE, 1975...) seemed also to Improve slightly the removal efficiency of pentachlorophenol by activated carton (fig. 7)

    With the development of the space shuttle program, space flight for the first time is available to individuals who have not been specially selected and trained to be astronauts. In addition, women are being actively recruited into the space program, both as mission specialists and as career astronauts. One purpose of this project was to examine some of the physiological responses of women to a simulated weightlessness program (12 day horizontal bedrest), to compare their responses to those reported in men during similar programs, and to test whether menstrual function might alter some of the physiological changes which occur during bedrest, specifically changes in the plasma volume, exercise tolerance, and venous compliance before and after bedrest

    Cet article se penchera sur la manière dont Olivier Choinière (Québec) et le Wooster Group (États-Unis) font usage de la pop culture dans leurs spectacles pour concevoir des assemblages singuliers, leur posture de créateurs glisse vers celle d’agenceurs d’objets culturels hétéroclites. La notion d’auctorialité se brouille, car elle se trouve télescopée entre le geste d’instauration de l’œuvre scénique, et celui qui renvoie à la multiplication de citations des références pop — elles-mêmes mettant à mal l’attribution à un auteur unique. Leur posture s’apparente alors à celle du prosumer, conjuguant les gestes de production et de réception des objets esthétiques. Les valeurs d’originalité et d’authenticité de leurs voix de créateurs se décèlent alors dans les mouvements de sélection et de recadrage.This article examines how Olivier Choinière (Québec) and the Wooster Group (United States) make use of pop culture in their staged performances to produce singular assemblies, their stance as creators shifting to that of designers of miscellaneous cultural objects. The notion of editorialization blurs, for it is trapped between the action of establishing the scenic work and that of referring to the multiplication of pop culture references - which itself adversely affects the attribution to a single author. Their stance then resembles that of the prosumer, combining the production and reception of aesthetic objects. As a result, the originality and authenticity of their creative voices are detected in the movement of selection and restructuring

    Regional 3D geophysical investigation of the Sudbury Structure

The posting is available free of charge and its use is subject to the SEG terms and conditions: https://seg.org/Terms-of-UseThe 3D geologic and structural setting of the Sudbury Structure was predicted by an integration of surface and subsurface geologic data with 2.5D modeling of high-resolution airborne magnetic and gravity data using 3D GeoModeller software. Unlike other CAD-based 3D software, GeoModeller uses the field interpolator method, whereby contacts of rock units are assumed to be equipotential surfaces, whereas orientation data determine the gradient and direction of the surfaces. Contacts and orientation variables are cokriged to generate 3D continuous surfaces for each geologic unit. Our 3D geologic model was qualitatively evaluated by forward computing the predicted gravity response at 1 m above topography and by comparing this response to the measured gravity field. Large-scale structures within the Onaping Formation and Archean basement, which overlie and underlie the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC), respectively, were not the cause of the linear gravity high in the center of the Sudbury Structure. We suggested that the deformation of the initial circular SIC may have commenced under the Sudbury Basin due to the reversal of the normal faults related to the Huronian rift system during the Penokean orogeny, therefore resulting into a north verging fold at the base of the SIC in the south range.
