Development of Improved Cable Yarding Productivity in Southern Africa for Small-Sized Trees

Production rates of cable yarding by fixed skyline in Southern Africa were found to be low, usually between 50 m3 to 60 m3 of timber per day on average. Investigations identified four major sources of lost productivity. Implementation of simple techniques selected to reduce losses resulted in a quadrupling of productivity though only a tripling is expected in the long term

Combining pre-trained Vision Transformers and CIDER for Out Of Domain Detection

Out-of-domain (OOD) detection is a crucial component in industrial applications as it helps identify when a model encounters inputs that are outside the training distribution. Most industrial pipelines rely on pre-trained models for downstream tasks such as CNN or Vision Transformers. This paper investigates the performance of those models on the task of out-of-domain detection. Our experiments demonstrate that pre-trained transformers models achieve higher detection performance out of the box. Furthermore, we show that pre-trained ViT and CNNs can be combined with refinement methods such as CIDER to improve their OOD detection performance even more. Our results suggest that transformers are a promising approach for OOD detection and set a stronger baseline for this task in many context

El Jardín Botánico Mediterráneo de la ETSI Agrónomos: Caracterización de la flora herbácea en relación a la flora arbóreo-arbustiva.

En este trabajo se ha caracterizado la flora herbácea del Jardín Botánico Mediterráneo situado en los Campos de Prácticas de la ETSI Agrónomos de Madrid. Se ha realizado tanto para el Jardín en su conjunto como para cada una de las formaciones vegetales representadas y de forma comparativa entre ellas. Considerando el Jardín en su conjunto o determinada comunidad vegetal, los resultados muestran un predominio de tres-cuatro familias botánicas. Predominan los biotipos terofítico y hemicriptofítico, la indiferencia edáfica y la clase fitosociológica Ruderali-Secalietea. Se ha podido corroborar que la flora herbácea del Jardín es principalmente de carácter arvense-ruderal, nitrófila e invasora

Le présent document correspond au premier et contient trois unités bibliographiques, trois des douze lettres prévues à l\u27origine par l\u27auteur pour former l\u27ouvrage De l\u27organisation des bibliothèques dans Paris. Le Comte de Laborde a pour objectif de dénoncer le projet de déménagement de la Bibliothèque Royale qui permettrait la destruction du Palais Mazarin. La première lettre s\u27apparente à une introduction insistant sur le caractère primordial du Palais Mazarin accueillant la Bibliothèque Royale en tant que lieu central de la ville de Paris, topographiquement et intellectuellement. Dans la seconde lettre, l\u27auteur entre dans le vif du sujet et critique les différents projets présentés pour le déplacement de la Bibliothèque Royale en soulignant les risques pour les collections et l\u27intérêt du bâtiment qu\u27il qualifie de monument historique. La huitième lettre ouvre des perspectives plus larges en revenant sur la construction des bibliothèques, pointant notamment des conceptions souvent inadaptées à la fonction de tels lieux : conservation et communication de documents. « Document numérisé pour l\u27ENSSIB » - Cet ouvrage comporte deux volumes. Le présent document correspond au deuxième et contient la quatrième lettre. Seules quatre des douze lettres prévues à l\u27origine par l\u27auteur pour former l\u27ouvrage De l\u27organisation des bibliothèques dans Paris sont ainsi publiées (la première, la deuxième, la quatrième et la huitième). Le Comte de Laborde a pour objectif de dénoncer le projet de déménagement de la Bibliothèque Royale qui permettrait la destruction du Palais Mazarin. La quatrième lettre est largement consacrée au Palais Mazarin. L\u27auteur propose un historique du bâtiment, de sa fondation en 1633 par le cardinal Mazarin à l\u27installation de la Bibliothèque Royale dans les locaux et au projet de déménagement de 1845. Parallèlement, deux chapitres évoquent les hôtels et châteaux construits à Paris et dans ses environs contemporains du Palais Mazarin, afin de souligner leur disparition en grande partie et donc l\u27importance de conserver ce dernier, véritable monument historique. Spatial distribution of cetaceans in the Bay of Biscay and implications of the Marine Strategy Directive for their conservation

The Bay of Biscay has been found to be the centre of highest cetacean diversity in the Northeast Atlantic. In response to these problems concerning the state of the marine environment, in June 2008, the UE established the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), which aims to achieve a good environmental status' by 2020. Hence, a requirement arises for ecological indicators based on an ecosystem approach. In this context, this study, relying on data from CODA project, proposes to investigate the summer spatial distribution of cetaceans in the offshore waters of the Bay of Biscay, using physiographic and remotely-sensed oceanographic variables. During the survey, 13 cetacean species were identified, being the most frequent, the fin whale and the common dolphin. A higher species richness was evident over the submarine canyons. Distribution of the three most sighted species (fin whale, common and striped dolphins) was modelled spatially, using generalised additive models, in relation to environmental features. Spatial segregation was clear, with dolphins distributed in the inner part of the Bay, and the whales towards West with special incidence around the Galician Bank. These results permit the identification of potential cetacean hotspots' in the Bay of Biscay region, enabling the establishment of marine protected areas. Cetaceans do have a great potential to act as indicator species and may be valuable assets for planning, promoting, and implementing MPAs. Their use as ecological indicators should be accomplished with other studies where different metrics are applied, also based on other taxonomic groups, which combined will provide a comprehensive panorama of the environmental status of the marine ecosystem to achieve the conservation objectives of the MSFD and comply with management plans for the Bay of Bisca
