Numerical simulation of a class of models that combine several mechanisms of dissipation: fracture, plasticity, viscous dissipation
We study a class of time evolution models that contain dissipation mech-
anisms exhibited by geophysical materials during deformation: plasticity,
viscous dissipation and fracture. We formally prove that they satisfy a
Clausius-Duhem type inequality. We describe a semi-discrete time evolu- tion
associated with these models, and report numerical 1D and 2D traction
experiments, that illustrate that several dissipation regimes can indeed take
place during the deformation. Finally, we report 2D numerical simulation of an
experiment by Peltzer and Tapponnier, who studied the indentation of a layer of
plasticine as an analogue model for geological materials
The evolution of the specific star formation rate of massive galaxies to z ~ 1.8 in the E-CDFS
We study the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) of mid-infrared (IR)
selected galaxies in the extended Chandra Deep Field South (E-CDFS). We use a
combination of U-K GaBoDS and MUSYC data, deep IRAC observations from SIMPLE,
and deep MIPS data from FIDEL. This unique multi-wavelength data set allows us
to investigate the SFR history of massive galaxies out to redshift z ~ 1.8. We
determine star formation rates using both the rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity
from young, hot stars and the total IR luminosity of obscured star formation
obtained from the MIPS 24 um flux. We find that at all redshifts the galaxies
with higher masses have substantially lower specific star formation rates than
lower mass galaxies. The average specific star formation rates increase with
redshift, and the rate of incline is similar for all galaxies (roughly
(1+z)^{n}, n = 5.0 +/- 0.4). It does not seem to be a strong function of galaxy
mass. Using a subsample of galaxies with masses M_*> 10^11 M_sun, we measured
the fraction of galaxies whose star formation is quenched. We consider a galaxy
to be in quiescent mode when its specific star formation rate does not exceed
1/(3 x t_H), where t_H is the Hubble time. The fraction of quiescent galaxies
defined as such decreases with redshift out to z ~ 1.8. We find that, at that
redshift, 19 +/-9 % of the M_* > 10^11 M_sun sources would be considered
quiescent according to our criterion.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Electrochemical attachment of a conjugated amino-ferrocifen complex onto carbon and metal surfaces
International audienceThe attachment of a pi-conjugated amino-ferrocifen complex was electrochemically achieved either by direct oxidation of the amino group or via the oxidation of the ferrocene moiety. In the first case, the modification consists in oxidizing, at +0.70V/SCE, the amino moiety to its radical cation, which upon deprotonation from the amino group, yields all aminyl radical that may add onto the electrode surface. Alternatively, it is demonstrated that the amine moiety can be indirectly oxidized through an intramolecular electron transfer from the amino moiety to the ferrocenyl group after oxidation of the ferrocene part at +0.40 V. This can occur thanks to the conjugated pi system of the complex. More importantly. it is demonstrated that the covalent attachment of the complex can be achieved on glassy carbon, gold, and platinum surfaces whatever the approach used. The possible mechanisms for the covalent attachment are discussed. Interestingly, it is also shown that the amino-ferrocene compound adsorbs very well likely via pi stacking between grafted and non-grafted molecules. Nevertheless, the adsorbed molecules could be easily removed after passing the electrode in an ultrasonic bath. The electrode coverage was determined under various conditions by integration of the corresponding voltammograms. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Fluctuations of energy flux in a simple dissipative out-of-equilibrium system
We report the statistical properties of the fluctuations of the energy flux
in an electronic RC circuit driven with a stochastic voltage. The fluctuations
of the power injected in the circuit are measured as a function of the damping
rate and the forcing parameters. We show that its distribution exhibits a cusp
close to zero and two asymmetric exponential tails, the asymmetry being driven
by the mean dissipation. This simple experiment allows to capture the
qualitative features of the energy flux distribution observed in more complex
dissipative systems. We also show that the large fluctuations of injected power
averaged on a time lag do not verify the Fluctuation Theorem even for long
averaging time. This is in contrast with the findings of previous experiments
due to their small range of explored fluctuation amplitude. The injected power
in a system of N components either correlated or not is also studied to mimic
systems with large number of particles, such as in a dilute granular gas.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
Spectroscopic Identification of Massive Galaxies at z~2.3 with Strongly Suppressed Star Formation
We present first results of a spectroscopic survey targeting K-selected
galaxies at z=2.0-2.7 using the GNIRS instrument on Gemini-South. We obtained
near-infrared spectra with a wavelength coverage of 1.0-2.5 micron for 26
K-bright galaxies (K<19.7) selected from the MUSYC survey using photometric
redshifts. We successfully derived spectroscopic redshifts for all 26 galaxies
using rest-frame optical emission lines or the redshifted Balmer/4000 Angstrom
break. Twenty galaxies have spectroscopic redshifts in the range 2.0<z<2.7, for
which bright emission lines like Halpha and [OIII] fall in atmospheric windows.
Surprisingly, we detected no emission lines for nine of these 20 galaxies. The
median 2 sigma upper limit on the rest-frame equivalent width of Halpha for
these nine galaxies is ~10 Angstrom. The stellar continuum emission of these
same nine galaxies is best fitted by evolved stellar population models. The
best-fit star formation rate (SFR) is zero for five out of nine galaxies, and
consistent with zero within 1 sigma for the remaining four. Thus, both the
Halpha measurements and the independent stellar continuum modeling imply that
45% of our K-selected galaxies are not forming stars intensely. This high
fraction of galaxies without detected line emission and low SFRs may imply that
the suppression of star formation in massive galaxies occurs at higher redshift
than is predicted by current CDM galaxy formation models. However, obscured
star formation may have been missed, and deep mid-infrared imaging is needed to
clarify this situation.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Mid-infrared Properties and Color Selection for X-ray Detected AGN in the MUSYC ECDF-S field
We present the mid-infrared colors of X-ray-detected AGN and explore
mid-infrared selection criteria. Using a statistical matching technique, the
likelihood ratio, over 900 IRAC counterparts were identified with a new MUSYC
X-ray source catalog that includes ~1000 published X-ray sources in the Chandra
Deep Field-South and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. Most X-ray-selected AGN
have IRAC spectral shapes consistent with power-law slopes, f_{nu} ~
nu^{alpha}, and display a wide range of colors, -2 < alpha < 2. Although X-ray
sources typically fit to redder (more negative alpha) power-laws than non-X-ray
detected galaxies, more than 50% do have flat or blue (galaxy-like) spectral
shapes in the observed 3-8 micron band. Only a quarter of the X-ray selected
AGN detected at 24 micron are well fit by featureless red power laws in the
observed 3.6-24 micron, likely the subset of our sample whose infrared spectra
are dominated by emission from the central AGN region. Most IRAC
color-selection criteria fail to identify the majority of X-ray-selected AGN,
finding only the more luminous AGN, the majority of which have broad emission
lines. In deep surveys, these color-selection criteria select 10-20% of the
entire galaxy population and miss many moderate luminosity AGN.Comment: 29 pages, including 7 figures. Accepted for publication in the
