Rajallinen työmuisti S2-oppijoiden puheenymmärtämisvaikeuksien selittäjänä

In this article, I will examine the connection between the constraints of working memory and the comprehension problems of L2 Finnish listeners by exploring the learners' listening task performance and the following stimulated recalls. Additionally, I will discuss what kind of memory functions make understanding easier and compensate for the limitations of working memory. The participants were 12 Arabic speaking adult Finnish learners of elementary and basic levels of proficiency, and the data consists of video recordings of their listening tasks and stimulated recalls. The limitations of working memory affected participants' comprehension problems particularly when focusing on one word or phrase resulted in forgetting the preceding or following words, and when the length of the speech unit to remember exceeded the participant's working memory capacity. The participants improved their own understanding and compensated for the constraints of working memory via top down processing – by filling the gaps in the text with the help of experiences and knowledge of the world from their long-term memory.Tässä artikkelissa käsittelen työmuistin rajallisuuden ja aikuisten suomenoppijoiden puheenymmärtämisvaikeuksien yhteyttä tarkastelemalla oppijoiden kuuntelutehtäväsuorituksia ja niitä seuraavia stimulated recall -haastatteluja. Lisäksi selvitän, millaisilla muistitoiminnoilla oppijat kompensoivat työmuistin rajallisuutta ja helpottavat ymmärtämistä. Tutkimukseen osallistui 12 arabiankielistä alkeis- ja perustason aikuista suomenoppijaa, ja aineisto koostuu oppijoiden kuuntelutehtäväsuoritusten ja stimulated recall -haastattelujen videotallenteista. Työmuistin rajallisuuden vaikutus ymmärtämisvaikeuksissa tuli esiin erityisesti silloin, kun yhteen sanaan tai ilmaukseen keskittyminen aiheutti edeltävien tai seuraavien sanojen unohtamista ja kun mielessä pidettävän puhejakson pituus ylitti osallistujan kapasiteetin. Osallistujat kompensoivat työmuistin rajallisuutta ja helpottivat ymmärtämistään ylhäältä alas -prosessoinnilla eli täydentämällä tekstiin jääneitä aukkoja säilömuistissa olevalla maailmantiedollaan ja kokemuksillaan

Enabling business networking within suburban development

Small and middle sized companies (SME) are important for local economies. Networking of SME is often considered to be a vital activity as well in production operations but also in innovation activities (Vesalainen 2006, Bessant and Tidd 2007.) From the perspective of small businesses the value networks (Vanhaverberke & Cloodt 2006) provide an interesting opportunity. Instead of mere value chain co-operation, the value networks open up new approaches to horizontal co-operation and opportunity to use the small businesses' own core competencies in a wider context. While the access to traditional value chain networks has been dominantly difficult for the smallest businesses, in value networks the access is largely dependent on the entrepreneur's personal contacts and social relationships. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the formation process of a SME value network focusing on the development of a small suburb. Through this analysis we seek to illustrate how regional Living Lab activities can promote SME networking. The theory section provides an insight about value network, user involvement in innovation and network evolution. Effect of Tactile Imitation Guidance on Imitation and Emotional Availability. A Case Report of a Mother and Her Child With Congenital Deafblindness

Interaction between parents and children with congenital deafblindness (CDB) is easily hampered due to dual sensory loss. This case report examines imitation and emotional availability in interaction between a mother and her 3-year-old child with CDB first in unguided play and then in three play sessions with tactile imitation guidance. The video recorded play sessions were analyzed for frequency, length, and modality of imitation. Emotional Availability Scales were used to code the emotional quality of interaction. The results showed that before the guidance the mother imitated the child mainly vocally. After the guidance, the use of tactility in imitations increased. Imitation exchanges lasted longest in the last session. The emotional availability between the mother and the child was higher after the guidance. Further research is needed to confirm the positive outcomes of this case study.Peer reviewe

Bodily-tactile early intervention for a mother and her child with visual impairment and additional disabilities: a case study

Purpose Congenital visual impairment and additional disabilities (VIAD) may hamper the development of a child's communication skills and the quality of overall emotional availability between a child and his/her parents. This study investigated the effects of bodily-tactile intervention on a Finnish 26-year-old mother's use of the bodily-tactile modality, the gestural and vocal expressions of her one-year-old child with VIAD, and emotional availability between the dyad. Materials and methods Mixed methods were used in the video analysis. The child's and his mother's bodily-tactile and gestural expressions were analyzed using a coding procedure. Applied conversation analysis was used to further analyse the child's emerging gestural expressions in their sequential interactive context. Emotional availability scales were used to analyze the emotional quality of the interaction. Results The results showed that the mother increased her use of the bodily-tactile modality during the intervention, especially in play and tactile signing. The child imitated new signs and developed new gestural expressions based on his bodily-tactile experiences during the intervention sessions. His vocalizations did not change. Emotional availability remained stable. Conclusions The case study approach allowed the in-depth investigation of the components contributing to the emergence of gestural expressions in children with VIAD

A nationwide study on parathyroid carcinoma

Background: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is rare and diagnostically challenging. Reported outcomes are rather poor and the incidence might be increasing.Material and methods: We performed a nationwide study on all cases (n=32) diagnosed in 2000-2011 in Finland, and compared clinical and histopathological characteristics and outcome to atypical parathyroid (APA; n=28) and parathyroid adenomas (PA; n=72). Näkökulmia nykyrunon vastaanoton haasteisiin

Tutkielmani käsittelee kotimaisen nykyrunouden lukemisen haasteita ja mahdollisuuksia. 2000-luvun ensi vuosikymmeninä runouden kentällä on tapahtunut suuria muutoksia niin kustantamisessa kuin kirjoittamisen lähtökohdissa. Nopea teosnimikkeiden kasvu ja tekijöiden kiinnostus kokeellisuuteen ovat vaikuttaneet teosten vastaanottoon. Tutkimuskysymykseni on, mikä nykyrunoudessa haastaa runojen lukemisen konventioita ja millä tavalla 2000-luvun ensi vuosikymmenten runous muodostaa merkityksiä. Tarkastelen teosten vastaanoton kysymystä niin tekstin, kontekstin kuin kulttuuristen käytäntöjen näkökulmasta. Esittelen vastaanoton keskeisiä haasteita analysoimalla 2000-luvun alun runouskeskustelua. Otan esiin erityisesti tekijyyden ja siihen liittyvien mielikuvien vaikutuksen lukemiseen. Pohdin kokeellisten lähtökohtien tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia ymmärtää teoksia. Runoteoksen äärellä lukeminen ja kirjoittaminen tulevat lähelle toisiaan. Tarkastelen tekijyyden ja lukijuuden suhdetta myös eräänlaisena kirjoittamisen muotona. Visuaalisuus ja kielen äänteellis-materiaalisen pinnan korostuminen ovat eräs 2000-luvun teosten kohosteinen piirre. Työni empiirisessä osassa analysoin runoteosten materiaalisuuden herättämiä tulkintoja ja kokemuksia, joita olen kerännyt opettamaltani lausuntaryhmältä kirjallisella kyselyllä. Esittelen lisäksi lausunnan ohjaajana kehittelemiäni menetelmiä, jotka voivat edesauttaa lukijan kykyä tunnistaa merkityksiä esimerkiksi tekstin rytmissä ja visuaalisuudessa. Hyödynnän Juri Joensuun ja Alan Prohmin muotoiluja tekstin materiaalisuutta koskien. Teosten materiaalisuus kytkee runouden muihin taidemuotoihin, kuvataiteisiin, musiikkiin ja esittäviin taiteisiin. Nostan esiin runoklubit ja esittävä taiteen mahdollisuuden toimia lukemisen parina tai muotona. Havaintojeni pohjalta esitän, että runokentän todellisuus on muuttunut nopeammin kuin yleiset ja julkisuudessa esitetyt käsitykset runoudesta ja kirjailijantyöstä. Lisäksi totean, että runouden äärellä lukija hyötyy erityisesti luovaan työskentelyyn liittyvistä taidoista sekä mahdollisuudesta vastaanottaa teos myös monitaiteisesti, esimerkiksi esitettynä
