    Coasting cosmologies with time dependent cosmological constant

    The effect of a time dependent cosmological constant is considered in a family of scalar tensor theories. Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological models for vacumm and perfect fluid matter are found. They have a linear expansion factor, the so called coasting cosmology, the gravitational "constant" decreace inversely with time; this model satisfy the Dirac hipotesis. The cosmological "constant" decreace inversely with the square of time, therefore we can have a very small value for it at present time.Comment: 7 pages, latex file (ijmpal macro), accepted for publication in Int.     Electrochemotherapy in the treatment of neoplasms in dogs and cats

    Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a technique that combines chemotherapy with local application of specific electric pulses with the aim of increasing the permeability of the plasma membrane in a reversible way, improving the influx of chemotherapeutic drugs into the cytoplasm and potentiating their cytotoxic effects. This technique has broadened the range of possible treatments for oncological patients, either on its own or as adjuvant to surgical procedures. It is especially useful in tumors located in regions with only a small surgical safety margin, such as the limb extremities, skull, oral cavity, neck and perianal region, among others. ECT makes it feasible to perform procedures more conservatively, or even to perform otherwise infeasible procedures, by expanding the margins without removing healthy tissues. The objective of this paper is to provide a brief bibliographic review of the principles, applications and future possibilities of electrochemotherapy, helping to disseminate pertinent information about this relatively new technique for the treatment of cancer

    EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF SMALL WIND TURBINES CONFECTIONED IN 3D PROTOTYPING

    This paper presents the experimental evaluation of the aerodynamic performance of two small wind turbines models with five blades in the Aerodynamic Tunnel Professor Debi Pada Sadhu. The models were confectioned on a reduced scale using 3D prototyping, the first one was designed using the blade element method, assuming the power coefficient of Betz, named Optimal Blade Betz (OBB) and the second is modified from the first one, named Optimal Blade Betz Modified (OBBM). The velocity distribution in the cross section of the tunnel was determined with the aid of a Pitot tube before the evaluation of the equipment. With the known tunnel velocity profile, the static torque of the prototypes were determined with the use of a digital torquemeter coupled to the machine axis, which recorded the readings for the speed range of 1 m/s to 9.88 m/s. Also with the torquemeter, were evaluated the influence of the angular position of the blades in the measured torque. The blades were designed allowing vary their angular position in the hub, thus changing the angle of attack, and by consequence, the torque produced. A photo tachometer was employed to measure the rotation of the model in free spin. With the experimental data, the curves of static torque and angular velocity were determined as a function of incident speed. Through experimental determination of the incident velocity profile and the velocity profile in the aerodynamic wake of each turbine, the variation of the amount of momentum of the outflow was evaluated, and so the power extracted by the rotor in free rotation. This study aims to contribute to the design of a real small wind turbine, informing the aerodynamic characteristics of the equipment that can be constructed with this layout. The experimental results demonstrate good approximation for torque and power to the results obtained by evaluation by element of the blade method. The turbine constructed with Optimal Betz Blades presented static torque 17.8% higher than constructed with the Modified Blades and extracted 22% more power from the air outflow

    The origin of power-law distributions in deterministic walks: the influence of landscape geometry

    We investigate the properties of a deterministic walk, whose locomotion rule is always to travel to the nearest site. Initially the sites are randomly distributed in a closed rectangular (A/L×L)A/L \times L) landscape and, once reached, they become unavailable for future visits. As expected, the walker step lengths present characteristic scales in one (L0L \to 0) and two (A/LLA/L \sim L) dimensions. However, we find scale invariance for an intermediate geometry, when the landscape is a thin strip-like region. This result is induced geometrically by a dynamical trapping mechanism, leading to a power law distribution for the step lengths. The relevance of our findings in broader contexts -- of both deterministic and random walks -- is also briefly discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.

    The Kinetic Interpretation of the DGLAP Equation, its Kramers-Moyal Expansion and Positivity of Helicity Distributions

    According to a rederivation - due to Collins and Qiu - the DGLAP equation can be reinterpreted (in leading order) in a probabilistic way. This form of the equation has been used indirectly to prove the bound Δf(x,Q)<f(x,Q)|\Delta f(x,Q)| < f(x,Q) between polarized and unpolarized distributions, or positivity of the helicity distributions, for any QQ. We reanalize this issue by performing a detailed numerical study of the positivity bounds of the helicity distributions. To obtain the numerical solution we implement an x-space based algorithm for polarized and unpolarized distributions to next-to-leading order in αs\alpha_s, which we illustrate. We also elaborate on some of the formal properties of the Collins-Qiu form and comment on the underlying regularization, introduce a Kramers-Moyal expansion of the equation and briefly analize its Fokker-Planck approximation. These follow quite naturally once the master version is given.
