Differentiation between polaron-pair and triplet-exciton polaron spin-dependent mechanisms in organic light-emitting diodes by coherent spin beating
Pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance offers a unique avenue to distinguish between polaron-pair (PP) and triplet-exciton polaron (TEP) spin-dependent recombination, which control the conductivity and magnetoresistivity of organic semiconductors. Which of these two fundamental processes dominates depends on carrier balance: by injecting surplus electrons we show that both processes simultaneously impact the device conductivity. The two mechanisms are distinguished by the presence of a half-field resonance, indicative of TEP interactions, and transient spin beating, the signature of PPs. Coherent spin Rabi flopping in the half-field (triplet) channel is observed, demonstrating that the triplet exciton has an ensemble phase coherence time of at least 60 ns, offering insight into the effect of carrier correlations on spin dephasing
Electric Field Effects on Photoluminescence-Detected Magnetic Resonance of a π-Conjugated Polymer
Electric fields are central to the operation of optoelectronic devices based on conjugated polymers as they drive the recombination of electrons and holes to excitons in organic light-emitting diodes but are also responsible for the dissociation of excitons in solar cells. One way to track the microscopic effect of electric fields on charge carriers formed under illumination of a polymer film is to exploit the fluorescence arising from delayed recombination of carrier pairs, a process which is fundamentally spin dependent. Such spin-dependent recombination can be probed directly in fluorescence, by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). It is found that the ODMR signal in a polymer film is quenched in an electric field in the absence of a current, but that, at fields exceeding 1 MV cm(-1), this quenching saturates at a level of at most 50%
Early-type galaxies in the SDSS. II. Correlations between observables
A magnitude limited sample of nearly 9000 early-type galaxies, in the
redshift range 0.01 < z < 0.3, was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
using morphological and spectral criteria. The sample was used to study how
early-type galaxy observables, including luminosity L, effective radius R_o,
surface brightness I_o, color, and velocity dispersion sigma, are correlated
with one another. Measurement biases are understood with mock catalogs which
reproduce all of the observed scaling relations and their dependences on
fitting technique. At any given redshift, the intrinsic distribution of
luminosities, sizes and velocity dispersions in our sample are all
approximately Gaussian. A maximum likelihood analysis shows that sigma ~
L^{0.25\pm 0.012}, R_o ~ L^{0.63\pm 0.025}, and R_o ~ I^{-0.75\pm 0.02} in the
r* band. In addition, the mass-to-light ratio within the effective radius
scales as M_o/L ~ L^{0.14\pm 0.02} or M_o/L ~ M_o^{0.22\pm 0.05}, and galaxies
with larger effective masses have smaller effective densities: Delta_o ~
M_o^{-0.52\pm 0.03}. These relations are approximately the same in the g*, i*
and z* bands. Relative to the population at the median redshift in the sample,
galaxies at lower and higher redshifts have evolved only little, with more
evolution in the bluer bands. The luminosity function is consistent with weak

Parents unwittingly leak their children's data:a GDPR time bomb?
There are many apps available for parents that are designed to help them monitor their pregnancy or child’s development. These apps require parents to share information about themselves or their children in order to utilise many of the apps’ features. However, parents remain concerned about their children’s privacy, indicating a privacy paradox between concerns and actions. The research presented here conducted an analysis of parenting apps alongside a survey of parents to determine if their concerns regarding sharing information about their children was at odds with their use of parenting apps.A survey of 75 parents found that they had strong concerns around the availability of information about their children but were using apps within which they shared this information. Parents were not giving consideration to the information requested when using apps. This should be of concern to developers given the growing awareness of users’ rights in relation to managing their data.We propose new guidelines for app developers to better protect children’s privacy and to improve trust relationships between developers and users
‘The hardest job I’ve ever done’: a qualitative exploration of the factors affecting junior doctors’ mental health and well-being during medical training in Australia
Background: Medical practitioners can experience considerable stress and poor mental health during their careers, with doctors in training known to be particularly vulnerable. Previous research has documented work-related factors that may play a role in the mental health status of junior doctors. However, these and additional factors, need to be explored further by considering theory-driven, social, structural and contextual issues. This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of junior doctors working in Australian hospitals to identify factors that impact their mental health during medical training. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 junior medical officers (JMOs) employed across six hospitals in Australia. Transcribed de-identified interviews were analysed thematically using a data-driven inductive approach. Results: Four interrelated main themes were identified: i) professional hierarchies; ii) occupational stress; iii) emotional labour, and iv) taking distress home; which detail the complex affective, relational and professional experiences of JMOs. The accounts demonstrate how the social, professional and organisational dimensions of these experiences impact upon trainee’s well-being and mental health, both positively and negatively. Together, the findings document the dynamic, nuanced aspects of junior doctors’ experiences of medical training and practice and highlights the importance of relational connections and the workplace environment in shaping JMOs’ social and emotional well-being. Conclusion: The current study adds to the understanding of how junior doctors navigate medical training in Australian hospitals and highlights the complexities of this experience, particularly the ways in which mental health and well-being are shaped by different elements. These findings have important implications to inform new strategies to improve JMO mental health and to leverage work and non-work contexts to better support JMOs during medical training
Discovery of Four Gravitationally Lensed Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the discovery of four gravitationally lensed quasars selected from
the spectroscopic quasar catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We describe
imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations that support the lensing
interpretation of the following four quasars: SDSS J0832+0404 (image separation
\theta=1.98", source redshift z_s=1.115, lens redshift z_l=0.659); SDSS
J1216+3529 (\theta=1.49", z_s=2.012); SDSS J1322+1052 (\theta=2.00",
z_s=1.716); and SDSS J1524+4409 (\theta=1.67", z_s=1.210, z_l=0.320). Each
system has two lensed images. We find that the fainter image component of SDSS
J0832+0404 is significantly redder than the brighter component, perhaps because
of differential reddening by the lensing galaxy. The lens potential of SDSS
J1216+3529 might be complicated by the presence of a secondary galaxy near the

Rethinking place and the social work office in the delivery of children's social work services
Limited attention has been given to the concept of place in social work research and practice. This paper draws on the national evaluation of social work practices (SWPs) in England undertaken between 2009 and 2012. SWPs were pilot organisations providing independent social work services for children in out-of-home care in five sites. One factor distinguishing some of these pilots was their attention to place. The evaluation employed a mixed methods approach and we use data from interviews with 121 children and young people in out-of-home care, 19 birth parents and 31 interviews with SWP staff which explored their views and experiences of the SWP offices. Children and young people
were alert to the stigma which could attach to social work premises and appreciated offices which were planned and furnished to appear less institutional and more ‘normal’. Daily interactions with staff which conveyed a sense of recognition and value to service users also contributed to a view of some SWP offices as accessible and welcoming places. Both children and parents appreciated offices that provided fun activities that positioned them as active rather than passive. Staff valued opportunities for influencing planning decisions about offices and place
was seen to confer a value on them as well as on service users. However, not all the SWPs were able to achieve these aspects of place, and engaging children and families in place was less likely when the service user population was widely dispersed. Recognising the importance of place and how place is constructed through relationships between people as well as through the physical environment appeared to be key to creating offices that combated the stigma attached to out-of-home care.

Source Matching in the SDSS and RASS: Which Galaxies are Really X-ray Sources?
The current view of galaxy formation holds that all massive galaxies harbor a
massive black hole at their center, but that these black holes are not always
in an actively accreting phase. X-ray emission is often used to identify
accreting sources, but for galaxies that are not harboring quasars
(low-luminosity active galaxies), the X-ray flux may be weak, or obscured by
dust. To aid in the understanding of weakly accreting black holes in the local
universe, a large sample of galaxies with X-ray detections is needed. We
cross-match the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) with galaxies from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4) to create such a sample. Because
of the high SDSS source density and large RASS positional errors, the
cross-matched catalog is highly contaminated by random associations. We
investigate the overlap of these surveys and provide a statistical test of the
validity of RASS-SDSS galaxy cross-matches. SDSS quasars provide a test of our
cross-match validation scheme, as they have a very high fraction of true RASS
matches. We find that the number of true matches between the SDSS main galaxy
sample and the RASS is highly dependent on the optical spectral classification
of the galaxy; essentially no star-forming galaxies are detected, while more
than 0.6% of narrow-line Seyferts are detected in the RASS. Also, galaxies with
ambiguous optical classification have a surprisingly high RASS detection
fraction. This allows us to further constrain the SEDs of low-luminosity active
galaxies. Our technique is quite general, and can be applied to any

Crossover from non-thermal to thermal photoluminescence from metals excited by ultrashort light pulses
Photoluminescence from metal nanostructures following intense ultrashort
illumination is a fundamental aspect of light-matter interactions.
Surprisingly, many of its basic characteristics are under ongoing debate. Here,
we resolve the majority of these debates by providing the most complete
theoretical framework to date that describes this phenomenon, and support it by
experimental confirmation. Specifically, we identify aspects of the emission
that are characteristic to either non-thermal or thermal emission, in
particular, differences in the spectral and electric field-dependence of these
two contributions to the emission. Overall, non-thermal emission is
characteristic of the early stages of light emission, while the later stages
show thermal characteristics. The former dominate only for moderately high
illumination intensities for which the electron temperature reached after
thermalization is close to room temperature. The theory is then complemented by
experimental evidence that demonstrates the novel aspects of our
considerations
