Auditory stimulation and cardiac autonomic regulation

    Get PDF
Previous studies have already demonstrated that auditory stimulation with music influences the cardiovascular system. In this study, we described the relationship between musical auditory stimulation and heart rate variability. Searches were performed with the Medline, SciELO, Lilacs and Cochrane databases using the following keywords: "auditory stimulation", "autonomic nervous system", "music" and "heart rate variability". The selected studies indicated that there is a strong correlation between noise intensity and vagal-sympathetic balance. Additionally, it was reported that music therapy improved heart rate variability in anthracycline-treated breast cancer patients. It was hypothesized that dopamine release in the striatal system induced by pleasurable songs is involved in cardiac autonomic regulation. Musical auditory stimulation influences heart rate variability through a neural mechanism that is not well understood. Further studies are necessary to develop new therapies to treat cardiovascular disorders

General care in bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients includes routine dental evaluations, which must be included in a multi-professional context. The oral cavity is a site that favors infections with high potential for consequent bacteremia and so infectious lesions must be treated or controlled by the dentist. The aim of this review is to discuss key questions in national and international literature with reference to oral inflammatory conditions of BMT patients, both those with predisposition to complications during the transplant and those that emerge during and after myelosuppression therapy. The literature emphasizes advanced periodontal disease, which is a chronic infectious condition that must be avoided or controlled during BMT, particularly because of the presence of S. viridans. The risk factors for oral mucositis, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and xerostomia have not yet been defined, particularly for oral mucositis and GVHD. Promising alternatives in the treatment of oral mucositis, including cryotherapy, administration of growth factors and laser therapy, are emphatically mentioned. In children, craniofacial and dental alterations, particularly resulting from radiotherapy are relevant. The increased risk of caries is controversial, and among fungal and viral lesions, oral and oropharyngeal infections by Candida and the herpes virus are identified as being of considerable clinical importance

This paper summarizes a project that is contributing to a change in the way of teaching and learning Mathematics. Mathematics is a subject of the Accounting and Administration course. In this subject we teach: Functions and Algebra. The aim is that the students understand the basic concepts and is able to apply them in other issues, when possible, establishing a bridge between the issues that they have studied and their application in Accounting. As from this year, the Accounting course falls under in Bologna Process. The teacher and the student roles have changed. The time for theoretical and practical classes has been reduced, so it was necessary to modify the way of teaching and learning. In the theoretical classes we use systems of multimedia projection to present the concepts, and in the practical classes we solve exercises. To supplement our theoretical and practical classes we have developed an active mathematics project called MatActiva based on the Moodle platform offered by PAOL - Projecto de Apoio Online (Online Support Project). In the last versions of Moodle, it is possible use the TeX language to create math questions. Using this tool we created a set of interactive materials. With the creation of this new project we wanted to take advantage already obtained results with the previous experiences, giving to the students opportunities to complement their study in Mathematics. One of the great objectives is to motivate students, encourage them to overcome theirs difficulties through an auto-study, giving them more confidence and the opportunity to seeing others perspectives of the mathematics subjects. In the MatActiva project the students have a big collection of information about the way of the subject works, which includes the objectives, the program, recommended bibliography, evaluation method and summaries. It works as material support for the practical and theoretical classes, the slides of the theoretical classes are available, the sheets with exercises for the students to do in the classroom and complementary exercises, as well as the exams of previous years. Students can also do diagnostic tests and evaluation tests online. Our approach is a reflexive one, based on the professional experience of the teachers that explore and incorporate new tools of Moodle with their students and coordinate the project MatActiva

ABSTRACT: This work provides an insight into sugarcane bagasse pre-treatment carried out with greener and more sustainable CO2/H2O system. Temperatures and residence times at a fixed initial CO2 pressure were studied to verify their effects on pre-treatment efficiency with regard to the chemical composition of both water-soluble and water-insoluble fractions as well as to the susceptibility of the latter to enzymatic hydrolysis at high total solids. Also, trends in enzymatic hydrolysis were analysed in function of biomass crystallinity. This work provides an integrated approach in the analysis of upgradable sugars that are released as a result of pre-treatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. At optimal pre-treatment conditions, 17.2 g.L-1 sugars were released in the water-soluble fraction mainly as pentoses in monomeric and oligomeric forms. The enzymatic hydrolysis of solids produced at these pre-treatment conditions gave 76.8 g.L-1 glucose in the substrate hydrolysate. The overall sugar yield delivered in both pre-treatment and enzymatic hydrolysis was 73,9 mol%. These results were compared to the chemical effect of hydrothermal and/or physico-chemical effects of N-2-aided hydrothermal processes and showed that the greener processing of biomass pre-treatment with CO2 is advantageous for the integrated valorisation of industrial residues and delivery of upgradable sugars within the biorefinery concept.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 Author(s).Since the discovery of laser-induced graphene (LIG), significant advances have been made to obtain green LIG (gLIG) from abundant, eco-friendly, natural, and organic renewable bio-based carbon sources. Recently, some sustainable and cost-effective electronic devices have been designed with gLIG, resulting in diverse solutions to the environmental impact caused by electronic waste (e-waste). However, there are still several challenges that must be addressed regarding the widespread market implementation of gLIG-based products, from synthesis to practical applications. In this review, we focus on sustainable precursor sources, their conversion mechanisms, physical and chemical properties and applications, along with the challenges related to its implementation, showing the future opportunities and perspectives related to this promising new material. Various systems based on gLIG for energy storage, electrocatalysis, water treatment, and sensors have been reported in the literature. Additionally, gLIG has been proposed for ink formulation or incorporation into polymer matrices, to further expand its use to non-carbon-based substrates or applications for which pristine LIG cannot be directly used. In this way, it is possible to apply gLIG on diverse substrates, aiming at emerging wearable and edible electronics. Thus, this review will bring an overview of gLIG developments, in accordance with the European Green Deal, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the new era of internet-of-things, which demands cost-effective electronic components based on the principles of energy efficiency and sustainable production methods.publishersversionpublishe

BioWorkbench: A High-Performance Framework for Managing and Analyzing Bioinformatics Experiments

    Get PDF
Advances in sequencing techniques have led to exponential growth in biological data, demanding the development of large-scale bioinformatics experiments. Because these experiments are computation- and data-intensive, they require high-performance computing (HPC) techniques and can benefit from specialized technologies such as Scientific Workflow Management Systems (SWfMS) and databases. In this work, we present BioWorkbench, a framework for managing and analyzing bioinformatics experiments. This framework automatically collects provenance data, including both performance data from workflow execution and data from the scientific domain of the workflow application. Provenance data can be analyzed through a web application that abstracts a set of queries to the provenance database, simplifying access to provenance information. We evaluate BioWorkbench using three case studies: SwiftPhylo, a phylogenetic tree assembly workflow; SwiftGECKO, a comparative genomics workflow; and RASflow, a RASopathy analysis workflow. We analyze each workflow from both computational and scientific domain perspectives, by using queries to a provenance and annotation database. Some of these queries are available as a pre-built feature of the BioWorkbench web application. Through the provenance data, we show that the framework is scalable and achieves high-performance, reducing up to 98% of the case studies execution time. We also show how the application of machine learning techniques can enrich the analysis process

In this paper results of tests on 32 concrete-filled steel tubular columns under axial load are reported. The test parameters were the concrete compressive strength, the column slenderness (L/D) and the wall thickness (t). The test results were compared with predictions from the codes NBR 8800:2008 and EN 1994-1-1:2004 (EC4). The columns were 3, 5, 7 and 10 length to diameter ratios (L/D) and were tested with 30MPa, 60MPa, 80MPa and 100MPa concrete compressive strengths. The results of ultimate strength predicted by codes showed good agreement with experimental results. The results of NBR 8800 code were the most conservative and the EC4 showed the best results, in mean, but it was not conservative for usual concrete-filled short columns.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

    Get PDF
The patient was a 15 year-old girl who turned out at the Physical Therapy Clinic presenting progressive scoliosis and angle of 50º Coob by X-Ray. She complained of back pain, headache and weakness of shoulder and pelvid girdle. Physical therapy evaluation came across features of delayed motor development and undermourishment, together with generalized muscle weakness (grade=4) which was observed by the Kendall test. Lung vital capacity was 40,5%. Clinical Changes: studies of the enzymes with acid alpha-glucosidase assay kits used on filter and leukocytes low enzyme activity, suggesting a late form of the Pompe disease. The molecular studies proved that the patient had a mutation associated with late-onset Pompe disease. Acid alpha-glucosidase enzyme assay studies performed in skin fibroblasts showed a reduction of the enzymatic acitivity of the acid alpha-glucosidase, confirming the previous results. On account of the results, Pompe disease induced important changes in clinical and functional, as well as metabolic changes, decreased strength and muscle action potentially, biomechanical changes in the spine and changes in respiratory capacity. Furthemore, this case of Pompe disease illustrates the importance od adequate physical therapy evaluation as it can be the starting point of investigation of serious conditions such as late onset Pompe disease.

Why not "do simple things in a simple way": Use of the Pap test as the first step in screening genetic stability for human cultured stem cell therapy?

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to analyze adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs) using the Pap test as a first screening step to evaluate genetic stability. Human adipose tissue from six healthy female donors was obtained from elective liposuction procedures. The cells were isolated, cultivated at P2/P3, characterized by flow cytometric analysis, and differentiation induced. The AT-MSCs were stained by Papanicolaou staining and analyzed according to the Bethesda classification, and viability-apoptosis relationships were evaluated. The results of the Pap test for Sample I indicated high-grade alterations consistent with genetic instability; for Samples II-V, atypical cells of undetermined significance; and for Sample VI, normal cells. These results demonstrate the potential of using the Pap test as an initial screening step to evaluate the genetic stability of cultured AT-MSCs and also suggest its use for other adherent cells such as embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells
