    Lubrication in cold rolling: Elasto-plasto-hydrodynamic lubrication

    A model has been developed with respect to hydrodynamic lubrication in cold rolling. The basic model describes the configuration of a rigid, perfectly plastic sheet rolled by a rigid work roll. The governing equations have been solved throughout the complete contact area, i.e. the inlet, the work zone and the outlet zone. Multi-level techniques have been applied to solve these equations together with boundary conditions, resulting in an algorithm solving the problem in O(n) operations. This means that the distribution of the pressure and the traction force in the lubricant film, and the shape of this film, as well as the plastic deformation of the sheet, can be accurately calculated for a large number of nodal points on a minicomputer. Subsequently elastic deformation, work hardening and dynamic behaviour of the flow stress have been incorporated in the model. It will be shown that the influence of these effects on the film thickness or the pressure distribution is considerable

    The Influence of Base Oil Properties on the Friction Behaviour of Lithium Greases in Rolling/Sliding Concentrated Contacts

    This study investigates the influence of base oil type and viscosity on the frictional behaviour of lithium-thickened bearing greases. A series of model lithium greases were manufactured by systematically varying viscosity and type of base oil, so that the influence of a single base oil property could be studied in isolation. In addition, selected greases were blended with oleic acid, with the purpose of evaluating its effectiveness in further reducing grease friction. Friction coefficient and film thickness were measured in laboratory ball-on-disc tribometers over a range of speeds and temperatures. For a specific oil type, the influence of base oil viscosity on friction was found to be closely related to its effect on film thickness: greases formulated with PAO oils covering a wide range of viscosities gave very similar friction at the same nominal film thickness. For a given base oil viscosity, base oil type was found to have a strong influence on grease friction under all test conditions. PAO-based greases generally produced lower friction than mineral- and ester-based greases. Addition of oleic acid to the test greases did not significantly affect friction within the range of test conditions employed in this study. The results provide new insight into the frictional behaviour of greases, which may be used to help inform new low-friction grease formulations for rolling bearing applications

    Effective Viscosity Determination for Lubrication Systems Using the Lincoln Ventmeter

    The selection criteria for lubricating grease in rolling bearings are different from those for a lubrication system that provides the bearings with grease. For optimum performance in bearings, the main properties are related to lubrication, whereas for optimum performance in a lubrication system, the grease should fulfill flow criteria. The main flow properties of a grease are its viscosity at low shear rates (including shear thinning) and its yield stress. In this article, a simple and robust method is described to measure both parameters simultaneously. The method is based on measuring flow through a pipe, simulating the so-called venting process, which makes the method directly applicable to lubrication systems. The Ventmeter measurements are compared to those obtained with plate–plate and capillary flow rheometers. It will be shown that the measured effective viscosity can readily be used to predict the pressure drop in lubrication systems, which makes it possible to design the system for optimum performanc

    Guiding-center dynamics of vortex dipoles in Bose-Einstein condensates

    A quantized vortex dipole is the simplest vortex molecule, comprising two counter-circulating vortex lines in a superfluid. Although vortex dipoles are endemic in two-dimensional superfluids, the precise details of their dynamics have remained largely unexplored. We present here several striking observations of vortex dipoles in dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates, and develop a vortex-particle model that generates vortex line trajectories that are in good agreement with the experimental data. Interestingly, these diverse trajectories exhibit essentially identical quasi-periodic behavior, in which the vortex lines undergo stable epicyclic orbits.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Dynamics of Vortex Dipoles in Confined Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We present a systematic theoretical analysis of the motion of a pair of straight counter-rotating vortex lines within a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We introduce the dynamical equations of motion, identify the associated conserved quantities, and illustrate the integrability of the ensuing dynamics. The system possesses a stationary equilibrium as a special case in a class of exact solutions that consist of rotating guiding-center equilibria about which the vortex lines execute periodic motion; thus, the generic two-vortex motion can be classified as quasi-periodic. We conclude with an analysis of the linear and nonlinear stability of these stationary and rotating equilibria.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Lett.

    Large-scale instability in a sheared nonhelical turbulence: formation of vortical structures

    We study a large-scale instability in a sheared nonhelical turbulence that causes generation of large-scale vorticity. Three types of the background large-scale flows are considered, i.e., the Couette and Poiseuille flows in a small-scale homogeneous turbulence, and the "log-linear" velocity shear in an inhomogeneous turbulence. It is known that laminar plane Couette flow and antisymmetric mode of laminar plane Poiseuille flow are stable with respect to small perturbations for any Reynolds numbers. We demonstrate that in a small-scale turbulence under certain conditions the large-scale Couette and Poiseuille flows are unstable due to the large-scale instability. This instability causes formation of large-scale vortical structures stretched along the mean sheared velocity. The growth rate of the large-scale instability for the "log-linear" velocity shear is much larger than that for the Couette and Poiseuille background flows. We have found a turbulent analogue of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves in a small-scale sheared turbulence. A mechanism of excitation of turbulent Tollmien-Schlichting waves is associated with a combined effect of the turbulent Reynolds stress-induced generation of perturbations of the mean vorticity and the background sheared motions. These waves can be excited even in a plane Couette flow imposed on a small-scale turbulence when perturbations of mean velocity depend on three spatial coordinates.     Ab initio simulations of liquid NaSn alloys: Zintl anions and network formation

    Using the Car-Parrinello technique, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are performed for liquid NaSn alloys in five different compositions (20, 40, 50, 57 and 80 % sodium). The obtained structure factors agree well with the data from neutron scattering experiments. The measured prepeak in the structure factor is reproduced qualitatively for most compositions. The calculated and measured positions of all peaks show the same trend as function of the composition.\\ The dynamic simulations also yield information about the formation and stability of Sn4_4 clusters (Zintl anions) in the liquid. In our simulations of compositions with 50 and 57 % sodium we observe the formation of networks of tin atoms. Thus, isolated tin clusters are not stable in such liquids. For the composition with 20 % tin only isolated atoms or dimers of tin appear, ``octet compounds'' of one Sn atom surrounded by 4 Na atoms are not observed.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 3 Figures on reques

    From planning the port/city to planning the port-city : exploring the economic interface in European port cities

    In last three decades, planning agencies of most ports have institutionally evolved into a (semi-) independent port authority. The rationale behind this process is that port authorities are able to react more quickly to changing logistical and spatial preferences of maritime firms, hence increasing the competitiveness of ports. Although these dedicated port authorities have proven to be largely successful, new economic, social, and environmental challenges are quickly catching up on these port governance models, and particularly leads to (spatial) policy ‘conflicts’ between port and city. This chapter starts by assessing this conflict and argue that the conflict is partly a result of dominant—often also academic—spatial representations of the port city as two separate entities. To escape this divisive conception of contemporary port cities, this chapter presents a relational visualisation method that is able to analyse the economic interface between port and city. Based on our results, we reflect back on our proposition and argue that the core challenge today for researchers and policy makers is acknowledging the bias of port/city, being arguably a self-fulfilling prophecy. Hence, we turn the idea of (planning the) port/city conflicts into planning the port-city’s strengths and weaknesses
