Progetto di ristrutturazione con cambio di destinazione d'uso del Palazzo della Canonica in Piazza dei Cavalieri (Pisa)

La presente tesi ha avuto per oggetto la ristrutturazione con cambio di destinazione d’uso dell’ala Ovest del Palazzo della Canonica,(ex Genio Civile), in Piazza dei Cavalieri. Nella prima parte viene definito il ruolo dell’ istituzione bibliotecaria nella società contemporanea, individuandone compiti e finalità. È stata quindi svolta una breve ricerca storica sulle biblioteche visto che all’evoluzione delle funzioni fondamentali di conservazione, catalogazione e divulgazione ha corrisposto nei secoli anche un mutamento dell’organizzazione spaziale. Vedere come nel corso degli anni è stato inteso il servizio bibliotecario, come libri e lettori si rapportavano tra loro, nonché come questo si traduceva in forme e spazi, ha permesso di individuare limiti e potenzialità di ogni tipologia, al fine di procedere con una progettazione veramente incentrata sugli utenti. Per meglio comprendere appunto le relazioni che legano documenti ed utenti viene proposta una classificazione tipologica degli organismi bibliotecari, utile per determinare le connessioni tra le varie unità funzionali e spaziali. Prima di affrontare lo studio della ristrutturazione è stato effettuato un piano programma per individuare le attività fondamentali e di servizio che si dovranno svolgere nella biblioteca. Poi si è passati alla fase creativa, con lo scopo di ricercare le possibili soluzioni per il soddisfacimento delle esigenze implicite ed esplicite; in questa fase, che ha portato alla formulazione del progetto di ristrutturazione si è tenuto conto degli aspetti distributivi e spaziali,architettonici e strutturali dell’edificio cercando di metterne in risalto le qualità e le potenzialità. Le zone di lettura e di studio sono gli ambienti fondamentali di una biblioteca, in cui vengono svolte le attività principali e in cui il confort acustico risulta necessario e per tale motivo l’attenzione si è focalizzata sugli elementi di facciata. Sono quindi stati effettuati delle ipotesi di calcoli previsionali per l’isolamento acustico di facciata. Tali elementi hanno condizionato non poco le scelte progettuali e la forma finale è il risultato di tutte questa condizioni. Abstracts This thesis has as its object the restructuring with change of use of the west wing of the Palace of the rectory , ( former Civil Engineers ) , in Piazza dei Cavalieri . In the first part, you define the role of the institution in contemporary society librarian , identifying tasks and goals. It was then held a brief historical research on libraries as the evolution of the fundamental functions of conservation, cataloging and dissemination paid over the centuries a change also of the spatial organization . See how over the years it has been understood library service , books and readers as they related to each other, and how this is translated into forms and spaces , enabled us to identify limitations and potential of all types , in order to proceed with a design really focused on users . To better understand precisely the relationships between documents and users are offered a typological classification of organisms librarians, useful for determining the connections between the various functional units and space . Before dealing with the study of the restructuring was carried out a program plan to identify the core activities and service that is to be conducted in the library. Then we moved to the creative phase , with the aim of researching possible solutions for meeting the needs of both implicit and explicit , in this phase, which led to the formulation of the renovation project is taking into account the distribution and spatial , architectural and structural building trying to highlight their quality and potential. The areas of reading and study environments are fundamental to a library, where the main activities are carried out and where the acoustic comfort is necessary and for this reason , attention has focused on the elements of the facade. Were then made of the hypothesis of forecast calculations for sound insulation of facade. These elements have influenced not a little the design choices and the final shape is the result of all this conditions

Electronic literature, and in particular hypertext, with its malleability, interactivity, connectedness, indeterminacy, erosion of boundaries between nations, human and machine, public and private, seems best suited to making sense of our technologically textured and globalised reality. In this light, Geoff Ryman’s 253 is analysed as an experimental example of hypertextual and global narrative; a locus where the evolving relationships between information technologies and social spaces, places and practices are staged and tested

Broome County Senior Centers: Addressing Issues of Utilization

Broome County senior centers serve as an access point for information and assistance, provide opportunities for socialization, offer a variety of activities as well as nutritious meals. They also help seniors to maintain their independence and enable them to stay in the community longer. While the 2010 Census data shows an increase in the aging population in Broome County, there has been a decrease in overall attendance and the number of meals served at the local senior centers. Some older adults are frequently utilizing senior centers for their various activities but are not using them to obtain a meal. As part of the funding used to run senior centers is tied to the numbers of meals served, a decrease in senior centers\u27 attendance challenges their future operation

Comparison of the TaqMan and LightCycler systems in pharmacogenetic testing: evaluation of the CYP2C9*2/*3 polymorphisms.

Background: Pharmacogenetic testing for drugmetabolizing enzymes is not yet widely used in clinical practice. Methods: In an attempt to facilitate the application of this procedure, we have compared two real-time PCRbased methods, the TaqMan_ and the LightCycler_ for the pharmacogenetic evaluation of CYP2C9*2/*3 polymorphisms. Results and Conclusion: Both procedures are suitable for pharmacogenetic studies. The TaqMan procedure was less expensive in terms of cost per sample, but the TaqMan apparatus is more expensive than the LightCycler apparatus

Thatcherismo e spettacolo della politica: il teatro di Hanif Kureishi

This article focuses on the impact of Thatcherism, especially of Margaret Thatcher’s ideological construction of politics in images, on the British cultural and artistic context of the end of the ‘70s and beginning of the ‘80s. Specifically, the article aims at showing the way in which thatcherite policies and ideas, which were for the most part hated by the intellectual circles, were opposed through forms of open political dissent such as fringe theatre. The ‘fringe’ had the purpose not only to represent politics, but also to turn the recurrent – and thatcherite – trope of ‘politics-as-performance’ into ‘performance-as-politics’, and thus to become a means of social transformation. As an example, this study analyses Hanif Kureishi’s 1983 drama Birds of Passage. In the work controversial issues such as Thatcher’s repressive policies about immigrants, the welfare state, and social protests are the focal points of a discussion which stems from an understanding of popular culture, and of theatre, as a contested terrain. Within the theoretical framework of Cultural Studies – whose methodological approach is mainly adopted in this study – theatre is in fact conceived by Kureishi as a place of negotiation and defiance of hegemonic paradigms and meanings.L’articolo analizza l’impatto del thatcherismo, ovvero della spettacolare ‘politica per immagini’ dell’ex leader conservatrice Margaret Thatcher, nel contesto culturale e artistico britannico di fine anni settanta-inizio anni ottanta. Nello specifico, mostra in che modo le politiche neo-liberiste thatcheriane, particolarmente detestate dal mondo intellettuale, venissero contrastate attraverso l’uso di una forma ancora privilegiata di comunicazione pubblica e dissenso politico quale era allora il teatro radicale o fringe; un tipo di teatro che ha avuto l’ambizione non solo di rappresentare il politico, ma di rovesciare il ricorrente tropo, tra l’altro fortemente thatcheriano, della politica-come-performance in quello della performance-come-politica, ovvero di tradursi esso stesso in strumento di trasformazione sociale. Cuore dell’analisi è un’opera di Hanif Kureishi, Birds of Passage, del 1983. In essa questioni legate all’involuzione autoritaria del governo thatcheriano in rapporto agli immigrati, al welfare o alle proteste sociali in un momento di forte crisi economica vengono messe sul tavolo di una discussione che, nella cornice teorica dei Cultural Studies – metodologicamente adottata in questo studio insieme a quella dei Performance Studies – appare centrata su un’idea della cultura popolare, e forse del teatro in primis, quale luogo del conflitto sociale e politico e, quindi, quale terreno eletto di sfida alle ‘rappresentazioni’ egemoniche

India e Inghilterra allo specchio. Un ritratto post-imperiale di Tom Stoppard

The paper is focused on a sophisticated radio play by Tom Stoppard, In the Native State (1991), in which the dramatist approaches the problems linked to the ethics of the British Empire in dealing with Indian culture in both the colonial and post-colonial periods. To do this, the play confronts and complexly interlaces two different sets, India in the Thirties and London in 1990, as if they were two worlds reflecting themselves in a time mirror. The issues dealt with, such as the centuries-old westernization of the Indian minds and culture on one side, and the Indianization of British language and customs on the other, are subtlety treated in art terms, as the reciprocal relationship between the two worlds conflates in the hybrid style of the portraits executed by the hand of an Indian painter who, notwithstanding, or thanks to, his mimic identity (in Homi Bhabha’s terms), becomes the mouthpiece of a fundamental ‘change of perspective’, from the Eurocentric representation of the Orient (in Edward Said’s terms) to the re-appropriation of a different point of view translating the achievement of the Nationalist movement that led India to independence in the Forties.L’ articolo è incentrato su un sofisticato lavoro radiofonico del drammaturgo inglese Tom Stoppard dal titolo In the Native State (1991). In esso l’autore affronta i problemi legati all’etica dell’Impero britannico nei suoi rapporti con la cultura e il popolo indiani sia nel periodo coloniale sia in quello post-coloniale. A tale scopo, il radiodramma mette a confronto, facendole specchiare l’una nell’altra, due ambientazioni differenti, l’India negli anni Trenta e la città di Londra nel 1990. A New Clathrate Class of Syndiotactic Poly(p-methylstyrene) with a Different Chain Conformation

A new crystalline clathrate class of syndiotactic poly(p-methylstyrene) has been found through thermal and WAXS analyses. In these clathrate forms, the polymer chains assume a T(6)G(2)T(2)G(2) conformation with a repetition period of 11.7 +/- 0.1 angstrom and t2 symmetry. The new conformation, supported by molecular mechanics calculations, presents a cavity, favorable to the formation of clathrate structure, only on one side of the polymer chain. This cavity is bigger than those presented by this polymer with a helical s(2/1)2 chain conformation found for all the other clathrates. After annealing, the clathrates of this new class are transformed in form II. For this new class of clathrates the term gamma is proposed
