    NoSOCS in SDSS. VI. The Environmental Dependence of AGN in Clusters and Field in the Local Universe

    We investigated the variation in the fraction of optical active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosts with stellar mass, as well as their local and global environments. Our sample is composed of cluster members and field galaxies at z≀0.1z \le 0.1 and we consider only strong AGN. We find a strong variation in the AGN fraction (FAGNF_{AGN}) with stellar mass. The field population comprises a higher AGN fraction compared to the global cluster population, especially for objects with log M∗>10.6M_* > 10.6. Hence, we restricted our analysis to more massive objects. We detected a smooth variation in the FAGNF_{AGN} with local stellar mass density for cluster objects, reaching a plateau in the field environment. As a function of clustercentric distance we verify that FAGNF_{AGN} is roughly constant for R >> R200_{200}, but show a steep decline inwards. We have also verified the dependence of the AGN population on cluster velocity dispersion, finding a constant behavior for low mass systems (σPâ‰Č650−700\sigma_P \lesssim 650-700 km s−1^{-1}). However, there is a strong decline in FAGNF_{AGN} for higher mass clusters (>> 700 km s−1^{-1}). When comparing the FAGNF_{AGN} in clusters with or without substructure we only find different results for objects at large radii (R >> R200_{200}), in the sense that clusters with substructure present some excess in the AGN fraction. Finally, we have found that the phase-space distribution of AGN cluster members is significantly different than other populations. Due to the environmental dependence of FAGNF_{AGN} and their phase-space distribution we interpret AGN to be the result of galaxy interactions, favored in environments where the relative velocities are low, typical of the field, low mass groups or cluster outskirts.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, Accepted to MNRA

    Let Γ\Gamma be a co-compact Fuchsian group of isometries on the Poincar\'e disk \DD and Δ\Delta the corresponding hyperbolic Laplace operator. Any smooth eigenfunction ff of Δ\Delta, equivariant by Γ\Gamma with real eigenvalue λ=−s(1−s)\lambda=-s(1-s), where s=1/2+its={1/2}+ it, admits an integral representation by a distribution \dd_{f,s} (the Helgason distribution) which is equivariant by Γ\Gamma and supported at infinity \partial\DD=\SS^1. The geodesic flow on the compact surface \DD/\Gamma is conjugate to a suspension over a natural extension of a piecewise analytic map T:\SS^1\to\SS^1, the so-called Bowen-Series transformation. Let â‰Șs\ll_s be the complex Ruelle transfer operator associated to the jacobian −sln⁥∣Tâ€Č∣-s\ln |T'|. M. Pollicott showed that \dd_{f,s} is an eigenfunction of the dual operator â‰Șs∗\ll_s^* for the eigenvalue 1. Here we show the existence of a (nonzero) piecewise real analytic eigenfunction ψf,s\psi_{f,s} of â‰Șs\ll_s for the eigenvalue 1, given by an integral formula \psi_{f,s} (\xi)=\int \frac{J(\xi,\eta)}{|\xi-\eta|^{2s}} \dd_{f,s} (d\eta), \noindent where J(Ο,η)J(\xi,\eta) is a {0,1}\{0,1\}-valued piecewise constant function whose definition depends upon the geometry of the Dirichlet fundamental domain representing the surface \DD/\Gamma

    GeMs/GSAOI observations of La Serena 94: an old and far open cluster inside the solar circle

    Physical properties were derived for the candidate open cluster La Serena 94, recently unveiled by the VVV collaboration. Thanks to the exquisite angular resolution provided by GeMS/GSAOI, we could characterize this system in detail, for the first time, with deep photometry in JHKs_{s} - bands. Decontaminated JHKs_{s} diagrams reach about 5 mag below the cluster turnoff in H. The locus of red clump giants in the colour - colour diagram, together with an extinction law, was used to obtain an average extinction of AV=14.18±0.71A_V =14.18 \pm 0.71. The same stars were considered as standard - candles to derive the cluster distance, 8.5±1.08.5 \pm 1.0 kpc. Isochrones were matched to the cluster colour - magnitude diagrams to determine its age, log⁥t(yr)=9.12±0.06\log{t(yr)}=9.12\pm 0.06, and metallicity, Z=0.02±0.01Z=0.02\pm0.01. A core radius of rc=0.51±0.04r_{c}=0.51\pm 0.04 pc was found by fitting King models to the radial density profile. By adding up the visible stellar mass to an extrapolated mass function, the cluster mass was estimated as M=(2.65±0.57)×103M=(2.65\pm0.57) \times 10^3 M⊙_{\odot}, consistent with an integrated magnitude of MK=−5.82±0.16M_{K}=-5.82\pm0.16 and a tidal radius of rt=17.2±2.1r_{t}=17.2\pm2.1 pc. The overall characteristics of La Serena 94 confirm that it is an old open cluster located in the Crux spiral arm towards the fourth Galactic quadrant and distant 7.30±0.497.30\pm 0.49 kpc from the Galactic centre.     The world-sheet corrections to dyons in the Heterotic theory

    All the linear alpha-prime corrections, however excluding the gravitational Chern-Simons correction, are studied in the toroidally compactified critical Heterotic string theory. These corrections are computed to the entropy for a BPS static spherical four dimensional dyonic black hole which represents a wrapped fundamental string carrying arbitrary winding and momentum charges along one cycle in the presence of KK-monopole and H-monopole charges associated to another cycle.     One of the major challenges that non-profit organizations face is inspiring people to be concerned about issues that seem geographically and emotionally distant. The aim of this study is to explore how Virtual Reality (VR) can boost inspiration and encourage potential donors to contribute to nonprofit fundraisings. To achieve this aim, a three group between-subjects experiment was conducted to examine how varying the degree of immersiveness of a short documentary about a remote health issue influences user reported social and spatial presence, inspiration, and donation intention. Findings reveal that perceived media richness gradually increases the user's spatial presence. Then, the positive effect of social and spatial presence on customer inspiration was tested and successfully verified.     Spectrally narrow exciton luminescence from monolayer MoS2 exfoliated onto epitaxially grown hexagonal BN

    The strong light-matter interaction in transition Metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers (MLs) is governed by robust excitons. Important progress has been made to control the dielectric environment surrounding the MLs, especially through hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation, which drastically reduces the inhomogeneous contribution to the exciton linewidth. Most studies use exfoliated hBN from high quality flakes grown under high pressure. In this work, we show that hBN grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) over a large surface area substrate has a similarly positive impact on the optical emission from TMD MLs. We deposit MoS2_2 and MoSe2_2 MLs on ultrathin hBN films (few MLs thick) grown on Ni/MgO(111) by MBE. Then we cover them with exfoliated hBN to finally obtain an encapsulated sample : exfoliated hBN/TMD ML/MBE hBN. We observe an improved optical quality of our samples compared to TMD MLs exfoliated directly on SiO2_2 substrates. Our results suggest that hBN grown by MBE could be used as a flat and charge free substrate for fabricating TMD-based heterostructures on a larger scale.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
