    Light Propagation in Nonlinear Waveguide and Classical Two-Dimensional Oscillator

    The quantum optical problem of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a nonlinear waveguide is related to the solutions of the classical nonstationary harmonic oscillator using the method of linear integrals of motion [ Malkin et.al., Phys Rev. 2D (1970) p.1371 ]. An explicit solution of the classical oscillator with a varying frequency, corresponding to the light propagation in an anisotropic waveguide is obtained using the expressions for the quantum field fluctuations. Substitutions have been found which allow to establish connections of the linear and quadratic invariants of Malkin et.al. to several types of invariants of quadratic systems, considered in later papers. These substitutions give the opportunity to relate the corresponding quantum problem to that of the classical two-dimensional nonstationary oscillator, which is physically more informative.Comment: 14 pages, including one Table, 29 bibliographic references; E-mail: [email protected]

    Scaling Roll Call Votes with wnominate in R

    This paper presents a software package designed to estimate Poole and Rosenthal W-NOMINATE scores in R. The package uses a logistic regression model to analyze political choice data, usually (though not exclusively) from a legislative setting. In contrast to other scaling methods, W-NOMINATE explicitly assumes probabilistic voting based on a spatial utility function, where the parameters of the utility function and the spatial coordinates of the legislators and the votes can all be estimated on the basis of observed voting behavior. Building on software written by Poole in Fortran, the new wnominate package in R facilitates easier data input and manipulation, generates bootstrapped standard errors, and includes a new suite of graphics functions to display the results. We demonstrate the functionality of this package by conducting a natural experiment using roll calls -- an experiment which is greatly simplified by the data manipulation capabilities of the wnominate package in R

    Recovering a Basic Space from Issue Scales in<i>R</i>

    Basicspace is an R package that conducts Aldrich-McKelvey and Blackbox scaling to recover estimates of the underlying latent dimensions of issue scale data. We illustrate several applications of the package to survey data commonly used in the social sciences. Monte Carlo tests demonstrate that the procedure can recover latent dimensions and reproduce the matrix of responses at moderate levels of error and missing data

    Heisenberg-picture approach to the exact quantum motion of a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator

    In the Heisenberg picture, the generalized invariant and exact quantum motions are found for a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator. We find the eigenstate and the coherent state of the invariant and show that the dispersions of these quantum states do not depend on the external force.     Energy evolution in time-dependent harmonic oscillator with arbitrary external forcing

    The classical Hamiltonian system of time-dependent harmonic oscillator driven by the arbitrary external time-dependent force is considered. Exact analytical solution of the corresponding equations of motion is constructed in the framework of the technique (Robnik M, Romanovski V G, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. {\bf 33} (2000) 5093) based on WKB approach. Energy evolution for the ensemble of uniformly distributed w.r.t. the canonical angle initial conditions on the initial invariant torus is studied. Exact expressions for the energy moments of arbitrary order taken at arbitrary time moment are analytically derived. Corresponding characteristic function is analytically constructed in the form of infinite series and numerically evaluated for certain values of the system parameters. Energy distribution function is numerically obtained in some particular cases. In the limit of small initial ensemble's energy the relevant formula for the energy distribution function is analytically derived.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    Efficient assembly and secretion of recombinant subviral particles of the four dengue serotypes using native prM and E proteins.

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.Background: Flavivirus infected cells produce infectious virions and subviral particles, both of which are formed by the assembly of prM and E envelope proteins and are believed to undergo the same maturation process. Dengue recombinant subviral particles have been produced in cell cultures with either modified or chimeric proteins but not using the native forms of prM and E. Methodology/Principal Findings: We have used a codon optimization strategy to obtain an efficient expression of native viral proteins and production of recombinant subviral particles (RSPs) for all four dengue virus (DV) serotypes. A stable HeLa cell line expressing DV1 prME was established (HeLa-prME) and RSPs were analyzed by immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy. We found that E protein is mainly present in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) where assembly of RSPs could be observed. Biochemical characterization of DV1 RSPs secretion revealed both prM protein cleavage and homodimerization of E proteins before their release into the supernatant, indicating that RSPs undergo a similar maturation process as dengue virus. Pulse chase experiment showed that 8 hours are required for the secretion of DV1 RSPs. We have used HeLa-prME to develop a semi-quantitative assay and screened a human siRNA library targeting genes involved in membrane trafficking. Knockdown of 23 genes resulted in a significant reduction in DV RSP secretion, whereas for 22 others we observed an increase of RSP levels in cell supernatant. Conclusions/Significance: Our data describe the efficient production of RSPs containing native prM and E envelope proteins for all dengue serotypes. Dengue RSPs and corresponding producing cell lines are safe and novel tools that can be used in the study of viral egress as well as in the development of vaccine and drugs against dengue virus.This work was supported by the 6th European Framework programme DENFRAME and by the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases of Hong Kong (RFCID#08070952)

    Strangers in the night: Discovery of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy on its first Local Group infall

    We present spectroscopic observations of the AndXII dwarf spheroidal galaxy using DEIMOS/Keck-II, showing it to be moving rapidly through the Local Group (-556 km/s heliocentric velocity, -281 km/s relative to Andromeda from the MW), falling into the Local Group from ~115 kpc beyond Andromeda's nucleus. AndXII therefore represents a dwarf galaxy plausibly falling into the Local Group for the first time, and never having experienced a dense galactic environment. From Green Bank Telescope observations, a limit on the H{I} gas mass of <3000 Msun suggests that AndXII's gas could have been removed prior to experiencing the tides of the Local Group galaxies. Orbit models suggest the dwarf is close to the escape velocity of M31 for published mass models. AndXII is our best direct evidence for the late infall of satellite galaxies, a prediction of cosmological simulations.Comment: 4 pages 5 figures 1 table, accepted in ApJ, july issu

    Socio-economic conditions and small business vulnerability to climate change impacts in Hong Kong

    Small and micro businesses bear the brunt of climate change impacts in the climate-challenged economy. Vulnerability is embedded into the socio-economic trajectories of their primary decision-makers. Multiple vulnerabilities may arise if the decision-makers’ socio-economic conditions are associated with climate-sensitive business characteristics. Previous research has provided little evidence on such linkages, thus losing insights into how different facets of vulnerability interact and evolve over time. This paper explores the interactions between elements of small business vulnerability and the socio-economic characteristics of their primary decision-makers. It draws on the results of a survey involving 116 owner-managers of small and micro businesses and in-depth interviews with a sub-sample. Study areas are three remote coastal communities in Hong Kong exposed to high floods. Results show that such interactions exist in multiple, non-linear ways. Socio-economic disadvantages (i.e. low education attainment, old age, low income, and female) are related to some aspects of small business vulnerability, while playing a role in mitigating or avoiding other aspects of it. The findings call for building frameworks that account for the multiple spheres in which vulnerabilities are engendered and their interactions, while allowing for complexities and feedback mechanisms
