    Youth Development Agents' Needs: Challenges for Extension Volunteer Management Competencies in Nigeria

    This study examined the needs of youth development agents as it affects extension volunteer managers' competencies. Youth development agencies who had registered with Global Youth Actions Network (GYAN) in Nigeria were used as the population of the study. A total of twenty nine (29) managers of these agencies with agricultural extension based activities were selected using purposive sampling technique. Structured questionnaire was administered online to elicit relevant information from the respondents for the purpose of the study. The study revealed that, majority (70%) of the respondents were male with an average age of twenty six (26) years. Out of the seventeen (17) areas of competencies identified among these managers, motivating youth volunteers ranked first, having a mean value of 4.07. The hypothesis testing carried out using correlation showed a significant relationship between agent's frequency of using volunteer administration and importance of volunteers in management (P<0.01) giving 0.653 while a significant relationship of 0.390 (P< 0.05) was also observed between importance of volunteers in management and training among agencies managers. It was also observed that volunteer agents could benefit from educational opportunities, resource materials and other support services in each of the areas of competencies. Regular training was therefore recommended for youth development agents to enable them update, improve and learn new strategies in the application of their competencies for extension service delivery.Keywords: Youth, Development, Agents' needs, Volunteer management, Competencies

    Concomitant endoscopic radiofrequency ablation and laparoscopic reflux operative results in more effective and efficient treatment of Barrett esophagus

    BACKGROUND: Barrett esophagus (BE) caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease can lead to esophageal cancer. The success of endoscopic treatments with BE eradication depends on esophageal anatomy and post-treatment acid exposure. STUDY DESIGN: Between January 2008 and December 2009, 10 patients were selected for combination treatment of BE using laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery and endoscopic radiofrequency ablation. Retrospective review of preoperative, procedural, and postoperative data was performed. RESULTS: Seven study patients had a pathologic diagnosis of nondysplastic BE and 3 patients had a diagnosis of low-grade dysplasia. Average length of BE lesions was 6.4 ± 4.8 cm. Procedure time averaged 154.4 ± 46.4 minutes. At the time of surgery, the mean number of ablations performed was 4.39 ± 1.99. Six patients were noted to have major hiatal hernias requiring reduction. Five patients (80%) had 100% resolution of their BE at their first postoperative endoscopy. The remaining 3 patients had a ≥50% resolution and underwent subsequent endoscopic ablation. Symptomatic results revealed that 4 patients had substantial dysphagia to solids and other symptoms were minimal. Two patients were noted to have complications related to the ablative treatments. One stricture and 1 perforation were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic radiofrequency ablation of BE at the time of laparoscopic fundoplication is feasible and can effectively treat BE lesions.     A structural connectivity convergence zone in the ventral and anterior temporal lobes: Data-driven evidence from structural imaging

    The hub-and-spoke model of semantic cognition seeks to reconcile embodied views of a fully distributed semantic network with patient evidence, primarily from semantic dementia, who demonstrate modality-independent conceptual deficits associated with atrophy centred on the ventrolateral anterior temporal lobe. The proponents of this model have recently suggested that the temporal cortex is a graded representational space where concepts become less linked to a specific modality as they are processed farther away from primary and secondary sensory cortices and towards the ventral anterior temporal lobe. To explore whether there is evidence that the connectivity patterns of the temporal lobe converge in its ventral anterior end the current study uses three dimensional Laplacian eigenmapping, a technique that allows visualisation of similarity in a low dimensional space. In this space similarity is encoded in terms of distances between data points. We found that the ventral and anterior temporal lobe is in a unique position of being at the centre of mass of the data points within the connective similarity space. This can be interpreted as the area where the connectivity profiles of all other temporal cortex voxels converge. This study is the first to explicitly investigate the pattern of connectivity and thus provides the missing link in the evidence that the ventral anterior temporal lobe can be considered a multi-modal graded hub

    Malignant pilomatricoma with multiple bone metastases in a dog: Histological and immunohistochemical study

    An eleven year-old mongrel dog was referred with a history of left forelimb lameness and an ulcerated mass on the neck. Histologically, the cutaneous neoplasm revealed cystic lobules composed of basaloid cells with abrupt transition to central keratotic material, containing pycnotic and shadow cells. Approximately 3 months after primary diagnosis, a lesion of the cortical bone on the left humerus was observed using X-ray. Samples obtained from the humerus were processed for histopathological examination and the neoplastic tissue was observed to be similar to the type identified in the neck. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a malignant pilomatricoma (MP) with bone metastasis. MP is a rare skin tumor that originates from hair matrix cells. To date, only nine reports have been presented in dogs. In the present study, we discuss the cytological and histological patterns of MP, confirmed by immunohistochemistry using β catenin antibody

    When Anomaly Mediation is UV Sensitive

    Despite its successes---such as solving the supersymmetric flavor problem---anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking is untenable because of its prediction of tachyonic sleptons. An appealing solution to this problem was proposed by Pomarol and Rattazzi where a threshold controlled by a light field deflects the anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking trajectory, thus evading tachyonic sleptons. In this paper we examine an alternate class of deflection models where the non-supersymmetric threshold is accompanied by a heavy, instead of light, singlet. The low energy form of this model is the so-called extended anomaly mediation proposed by Nelson and Weiner, but with potential for a much higher deflection threshold. The existence of this high deflection threshold implies that the space of anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking deflecting models is larger than previously thought.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure (version to appear in JHEP

    Homogeneous catalysis under ultra-dilute conditions: TAML/NaClO oxidation of persistent metaldehyde

To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.1021/jacs.6b11145TAML activators enable homogenous oxidation catalysis where the catalyst and substrate (S) are ultra-dilute (pM–low μM) and the oxidant is very dilute (high nM–low mM). Water contamination by exceptionally persistent micropollutants (MPs), including metaldehyde (Met), provides an ideal space for determining the characteristics and utilitarian limits of this ultradilute catalysis. The low MP concentrations decrease throughout catalysis with S oxidation (kII) and catalyst inactivation (ki) competing for the active catalyst. The percentage of substrate converted (%Cvn) can be increased by discovering methods to increase kII/ki. Here we show that NaClO extends catalyst lifetime to increase the Met turnover number (TON) threefold compared with H2O2, highlighting the importance of oxidant choice as a design tool in TAML systems. Met oxidation studies (pH 7, D2O, 0.01 M phosphate, 25 °C) monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy show benign acetic acid as the only significant product. Analysis of TAML/NaClO treated Met solutions employing successive identical catalyst doses revealed that the processes can be modeled by the recently published relationship between the initial and final [S] (S0 and S∞, respectively), the initial [catalyst] (FeTot) and kII/ki. Consequently, this study establishes that S is proportional to S0 and that the %Cvn is conserved across all catalyst doses in multicatalyst-dose processes because the rate of the kII process depends on [S] while that of the ki process does not. A general tool for determining the FeTot required to effect a desired %Cvn is presented. Examination of the dependence of TON on kII/ki and FeTot at a fixed S0 indicates that for any TAML process employing FeTot < 1 10-6 M, small catalyst doses are not more efficient than one large dose.T.J.C thanks the Heinz Endowments for funding.     Transmission of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus during the Incubation Period in Pigs.

    Understanding the quantitative characteristics of a pathogen's capability to transmit during distinct phases of infection is important to enable accurate predictions of the spread and impact of a disease outbreak. In the current investigation, the potential for transmission of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) during the incubation (preclinical) period of infection was investigated in seven groups of pigs that were sequentially exposed to a group of donor pigs that were infected by simulated-natural inoculation. Contact-exposed pigs were comingled with infected donors through successive 8-h time slots spanning from 8 to 64 h post-inoculation (hpi) of the donor pigs. The transition from latent to infectious periods in the donor pigs was clearly defined by successful transmission of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) to all contact pigs that were exposed to the donors from 24 hpi and later. This onset of infectiousness occurred concurrent with detection of viremia, but approximately 24 h prior to the first appearance of clinical signs of FMD in the donors. Thus, the latent period of infection ended approximately 24 h before the end of the incubation period. There were significant differences between contact-exposed groups in the time elapsed from virus exposure to the first detection of FMDV shedding, viremia, and clinical lesions. Specifically, the onset and progression of clinical FMD were more rapid in pigs that had been exposed to the donor pigs during more advanced phases of disease, suggesting that these animals had received a higher effective challenge dose. These results demonstrate transmission and dissemination of FMD within groups of pigs during the incubation period of infection. Furthermore, these findings suggest that under current conditions, shedding of FMDV in oropharyngeal fluids is a more precise proxy for FMDV infectiousness than clinical signs of infection. These findings may impact modeling of the propagation of FMD outbreaks that initiate in pig holdings and should be considered when designing FMD control strategies
