The Golden Ratio Prediction for the Solar Angle from a Natural Model with A5 Flavour Symmetry
We formulate a consistent model predicting, in the leading order
approximation, maximal atmospheric mixing angle, vanishing reactor angle and
tan {\theta}_12 = 1/{\phi} where {\phi} is the Golden Ratio. The model is based
on the flavour symmetry A5 \times Z5 \times Z3, spontaneously broken by a set
of flavon fields. By minimizing the scalar potential of the theory up to the
next-to-leading order in the symmetry breaking parameter, we demonstrate that
this mixing pattern is naturally achieved in a finite portion of the parameter
space, through the vacuum alignment of the flavon fields. The leading order
approximation is stable against higher-order corrections. We also compare our

MicroRNAs miR-203-3p, miR-664-3p and miR-708-5p are associated with median strain lifespan in mice

Available from Springer Nature via the DOI in this record.MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA species that have been shown to have roles in multiple processes that occur in higher eukaryotes. They act by binding to specific sequences in the 3' untranslated region of their target genes and causing the transcripts to be degraded by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). MicroRNAs have previously been reported to demonstrate altered expression in several aging phenotypes such as cellular senescence and age itself. Here, we have measured the expression levels of 521 small regulatory microRNAs (miRNAs) in spleen tissue from young and old animals of 6 mouse strains with different median strain lifespans by quantitative real-time PCR. Expression levels of 3 microRNAs were robustly associated with strain lifespan, after correction for multiple statistical testing (miR-203-3p [β-coefficient = -0.6447, p = 4.8 × 10(-11)], miR-664-3p [β-coefficient = 0.5552, p = 5.1 × 10(-8)] and miR-708-5p [β-coefficient = 0.4986, p = 1.6 × 10(-6)]). Pathway analysis of binding sites for these three microRNAs revealed enrichment of target genes involved in key aging and longevity pathways including mTOR, FOXO and MAPK, most of which also demonstrated associations with longevity. Our results suggests that miR-203-3p, miR-664-3p and miR-708-5p may be implicated in pathways determining lifespan in mammals.This work was funded by the Wellcome Trust (grant number WT097835MF to D. Changes in the expression of splicing factor transcripts and variations in alternative splicing are associated with lifespan in mice and humans

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Dysregulation of splicing factor expression and altered alternative splicing are associated with aging in humans and other species, and also with replicative senescence in cultured cells. Here, we assess whether expression changes of key splicing regulator genes and consequent effects on alternative splicing are also associated with strain longevity in old and young mice, across 6 different mouse strains with varying lifespan (A/J, NOD.B10Sn-H2(b) /J, PWD.Phj, 129S1/SvlmJ, C57BL/6J and WSB/EiJ). Splicing factor expression and changes to alternative splicing were associated with strain lifespan in spleen and to a lesser extent in muscle. These changes mainly involved hnRNP splicing inhibitor transcripts with most changes more marked in spleens of young animals from long-lived strains. Changes in spleen isoform expression were suggestive of reduced cellular senescence and retained cellular proliferative capacity in long-lived strains. Changes in muscle isoform expression were consistent with reduced pro-inflammatory signalling in longer-lived strains. Two splicing regulators, HNRNPA1 and HNRNPA2B1, were also associated with parental longevity in humans, in the InCHIANTI aging study. Splicing factors may represent a driver, mediator or early marker of lifespan in mouse, as expression differences were present in the young animals of long-lived strains. Changes to alternative splicing patterns of key senescence genes in spleen and key remodelling genes in muscle suggest that correct regulation of alternative splicing may enhance lifespan in mice. A new concurrent chemotherapy with vinorelbine and mitomycin C in combination with radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and toxicity of concurrent chemotherapy with vinorelbine and mitomycin C in combination with accelerated radiotherapy (RT) in patients with locally advanced cancer of the head and neck. Patients and Methods: Between January 2003 and March 2004, 15 patients with T4/N2-3 squamous cell carcinoma (12/15) and with N3 cervical lymph node metastases of carcinoma of unknown primary (3/15) were treated with chemotherapy and simultaneous accelerated RT. Results: 11 patients completed therapy without interruption or dose reduction. Grade 3 - 4 acute mucosal toxicity was observed in 9/15 patients, grade 4 hematologic toxicity in 6/15 patients. At a median follow-up of 7.5 months, 2 patients have died of intercurrent disease, 2 patients have experienced local relapse; 5 patients are alive with no evidence of disease at the primary tumor site. Non-monotonic field-dependence of the ZFC magnetization peak in some systems of magnetic nanoparticles
We have performed magnetic measurements on a diluted system of gamma-Fe2O3
nanoparticles (~7nm), and on a ferritin sample. In both cases, the ZFC-peak
presents a non-monotonic field dependence, as has already been reported in some
experiments,and discussed as a possible evidence of resonant tunneling. Within
simple assumptions, we derive expressions for the magnetization obtained in the
usual ZFC, FC, TRM procedures. We point out that the ZFC-peak position is
extremely sensitive to the width of the particle size distribution, and give
some numerical estimates of this effect. We propose to combine the FC
magnetization with a modified TRM measurement, a procedure which allows a more
direct access to the barrier distribution in a field. The typical barrier
values which are obtained with this method show a monotonic decrease for
increasing fields, as expected from the simple effect of anisotropy barrier
lowering, in contrast with the ZFC results. From our measurements on
gamma-Fe2O3 particles, we show that the width of the effective barrier
distribution is slightly increasing with the field, an effect which is
sufficient for causing the observed initial increase of the ZFC-peak

Repressing Anarchy in Neutrino Mass Textures
The recent results that is relatively large, of the order of
the previous upper bound, and the indications of a sizable deviation of
from the maximal value are in agreement with the predictions of
Anarchy in the lepton sector. The quark and charged lepton hierarchies can then
be reproduced in a SU(5) GUT context by attributing non-vanishing
charges, different for each family, only to the SU(5) tenplet states. The fact
that the observed mass hierarchies are stronger for up quarks than for down
quarks and charged leptons supports this idea. As discussed in the past, in the
flexible context of , different patterns of charges can
be adopted going from Anarchy to various types of hierarchy. We revisit this
approach by also considering new models and we compare all versions to the
present data. As a result we confirm that, by relaxing the extreme ansatz of
equal charges for all SU(5) pentaplets and singlets, better
agreement with the data than for Anarchy is obtained without increasing the
model complexity. We also present the distributions obtained in the different
models for the Dirac CP-violating phase. Finally we discuss the relative merits

Survival of dental implants in patients with oral cancer treated by surgery and radiotherapy: a retrospective study
BACKGROUND:
The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the survival of dental implants placed after ablative surgery, in patients affected by oral cancer treated with or without radiotherapy.
METHODS:
We collected data for 34 subjects (22 females, 12 males; mean age: 51 ± 19) with malignant oral tumors who had been treated with ablative surgery and received dental implant rehabilitation between 2007 and 2012. Postoperative radiation therapy (less than 50 Gy) was delivered before implant placement in 12 patients. A total of 144 titanium implants were placed, at a minimum interval of 12 months, in irradiated and non-irradiated residual bone.
RESULTS:
Implant loss was dependent on the position and location of the implants (P = 0.05-0.1). Moreover, implant survival was dependent on whether the patient had received radiotherapy. Spontaneous R-Parity Violation, Flavor Symmetry and Tribimaximal Mixing
We explore the possibility of spontaneous R parity violation in the context
of flavor symmetry. Our model contains singlet matter chiral superfields which are arranged as triplet of
and as well as few additional Higgs chiral superfields which are singlet
under MSSM gauge group and belong to triplet and singlet representation under
the flavor symmetry. R parity is broken spontaneously by the vacuum
expectation values of the different sneutrino fields and hence we have
neutrino-neutralino as well as neutrino-MSSM gauge singlet higgsino mixings in
our model, in addition to the standard model neutrino- gauge singlet neutrino,
gaugino-higgsino and higgsino-higgsino mixings. Because all of these mixings we
have an extended neutral fermion mass matrix. We explore the low energy
neutrino mass matrix for our model and point out that with some specific
constraints between the sneutrino vacuum expectation values as well as the MSSM
gauge singlet Higgs vacuum expectation values, the low energy neutrino mass
matrix will lead to a tribimaximal mixing matrix. We also analyze the potential
minimization for our model and show that one can realize a higher vacuum
expectation value of the singlet
sneutrino fields even when the other sneutrino vacuum expectation values are
