Iron and molybdenum valences in double-perovskite (Sr,Nd)2FeMoO6: electron-doping effect
Double perovskite, (Sr1-xNdx)2FeMoO6, was doped with electrons through
partial substitution of divalent Sr by trivalent Nd (0 < x < 0.2). The Fe
valence and the degree of B-site order were probed by 57Fe Mossbauer
spectroscopy. Replacing Sr by Nd increased the fraction of Fe and Mo atoms
occupying wrong sites, i.e. antisite disorder. It had very little effect on the
Fe valence: a small but visible increase in the isomer shift was seen for the
mixed-valent FeII/III atoms occupying the right site indicating a slight
movement towards divalency of these atoms, which was more than counterbalanced
by the increase in the fraction of antisite Fe atoms with III valence state. It
is therefore argued that the bulk of the electron doping is received by
antisite Mo atoms, which - being surrounded by six MoV/VI atoms - prefer the
lower IV/V valence state. Thus under Nd substitution, the charge-neutrality
requirement inflicts a lattice disorder such that low-valent MoIV/V can exist.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Solid State Commu
The Labor Market in KIMOD
This is a description of the labor market sector in the dynamic medium term macroeconomic model KIMOD developed at the National Institute of Economic Research (NIER). Unemployment is caused by matching inefficiencies of the type described by C. Pissarides in Equilibrium Unemployment, 2000. Unemployed workers and firms with vacant jobs are engaged in costly search for a profitable match. Total hirings from unemployment into employment depend on the number of unemployed workers and vacant jobs. Flows into unemployment come from new entrants into the labor force and from exogenous separation of matched job - worker pairs. Wages are set in individual negotiations between the worker and the firm in a match, according to the Nash bargaining solution. Some inertia in real wages follows from unemployment benefits being indexed to the previous period?s market wage. These features lead to an unemployment rate which adjusts with some inertia towards a long run equilibrium level. Turnover costs provide some incentives for labor hoarding by firms during temporary downturns. The effects on the economy from variations in hours worked due to variations in the labor force are distinct from those due to variations in average working time. Learning to Personalize in Appearance-Based Gaze Tracking
Personal variations severely limit the performance of appearance-based gaze
tracking. Adapting to these variations using standard neural network model
adaptation methods is difficult. The problems range from overfitting, due to
small amounts of training data, to underfitting, due to restrictive model
architectures. We tackle these problems by introducing the SPatial Adaptive
GaZe Estimator (SPAZE). By modeling personal variations as a low-dimensional
latent parameter space, SPAZE provides just enough adaptability to capture the
range of personal variations without being prone to overfitting. Calibrating
SPAZE for a new person reduces to solving a small optimization problem. SPAZE
achieves an error of 2.70 degrees with 9 calibration samples on MPIIGaze,
improving on the state-of-the-art by 14 %. We contribute to gaze tracking
research by empirically showing that personal variations are well-modeled as a
3-dimensional latent parameter space for each eye. We show that this
low-dimensionality is expected by examining model-based approaches to gaze
tracking. We also show that accurate head pose-free gaze tracking is possible
The quest for the best consumer confidence indicator
We search through all possible consumer confidence indicators in order to find the single indicator that has the highest correlation with private consumption growth. Moreover, we contrast this indicator to the Consumer Confidence Indicator used by the European Commission, and some alternative indicators; also in terms of their predictive power of private consumption. In this context, we test the hypothesis that an indicator based on questions related to the household, rather than the general economy, would prove informative. We find that this "micro" indicator, as well as an optimal indicator that takes into account the specifics of all EU member states, outperform the current Consumer Confidence Indicator. Language and Dialect Identification of Cuneiform Texts
This article introduces a corpus of cuneiform texts from which the dataset
for the use of the Cuneiform Language Identification (CLI) 2019 shared task was
derived as well as some preliminary language identification experiments
conducted using that corpus. We also describe the CLI dataset and how it was
derived from the corpus. In addition, we provide some baseline language
identification results using the CLI dataset. To the best of our knowledge, the
experiments detailed here are the first time automatic language identification
methods have been used on cuneiform data
Simulated single molecule microscopy with SMeagol
SMeagol is a software tool to simulate highly realistic microscopy data based
on spatial systems biology models, in order to facilitate development,
validation, and optimization of advanced analysis methods for live cell single
molecule microscopy data. Availability and Implementation: SMeagol runs on
Matlab R2014 and later, and uses compiled binaries in C for reaction-diffusion
simulations. Documentation, source code, and binaries for recent versions of
Mac OS, Windows, and Ubuntu Linux can be downloaded from
