    The Permeability of Network Boundaries: Strategic Alliances in the Japanese Electronics Industry in the 1990s

    This paper looks at the choice of strategic partners for alliance formation in the Japanese electronics industry during the post-bubble economic period 1992-97. Results from a dyad analysis of 128 companies suggest that firms tend to look for partners within their existing vertical keiretsu networks of organizations for alliances that target the creation of resources that build on existing knowledge (production or distribution) but that this common keiretsu effect disappears for alliances that involve new knowledge creation (new product or technology development). The role of corporate networks, environmental uncertainty and their implications for our understanding of strategic alliance formation and the dynamics of social networks are discussed.

    Deterministic Time-Space Tradeoffs for k-SUM

    Given a set of numbers, the kk-SUM problem asks for a subset of kk numbers that sums to zero. When the numbers are integers, the time and space complexity of kk-SUM is generally studied in the word-RAM model; when the numbers are reals, the complexity is studied in the real-RAM model, and space is measured by the number of reals held in memory at any point. We present a time and space efficient deterministic self-reduction for the kk-SUM problem which holds for both models, and has many interesting consequences. To illustrate: * 33-SUM is in deterministic time O(n2lglg(n)/lg(n))O(n^2 \lg\lg(n)/\lg(n)) and space O(nlg(n)lglg(n))O\left(\sqrt{\frac{n \lg(n)}{\lg\lg(n)}}\right). In general, any polylogarithmic-time improvement over quadratic time for 33-SUM can be converted into an algorithm with an identical time improvement but low space complexity as well. * 33-SUM is in deterministic time O(n2)O(n^2) and space O(n)O(\sqrt n), derandomizing an algorithm of Wang. * A popular conjecture states that 3-SUM requires n2o(1)n^{2-o(1)} time on the word-RAM. We show that the 3-SUM Conjecture is in fact equivalent to the (seemingly weaker) conjecture that every O(n.51)O(n^{.51})-space algorithm for 33-SUM requires at least n2o(1)n^{2-o(1)} time on the word-RAM. * For k4k \ge 4, kk-SUM is in deterministic O(nk2+2/k)O(n^{k - 2 + 2/k}) time and O(n)O(\sqrt{n}) space

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use

    A fast data acquisition system for the study of transient events by high repetition rate time-of-flight mass spectrometry

    Recent advances in commercially available data acquisition electronics embodying high speed A/D conversion coupled to increased memory storage have now made practical (at least within time intervals of a third of a millisecond or more) the capturing of all of the data generated by a high repetition rate time-of-flight mass spectrometer producing complete spectra every 25 to 35 microseconds. Such a system was assembled and interfaced with a personal computer for control and management of data. The applications are described for recording time-resolved spectra of individual vapor plumes induced from the pulsed-laser heating of material. Each laser pulse triggers the system to generate automatically a 3-dimensional (3-D) presentation of the time-resolved spectra with m/z labeling of the major mass peaks, plus an intensity versus time display of both the laser pulse and the resulting vapor pulse. The software also permits storing of data and its presentation in various additional forms

    The Supply Side of Innovation: H-1B Visa Reforms and US Ethnic Invention

    This study evaluates the impact of high-skilled immigrants on US technology formation. Specifically, we use reduced-form specifications that exploit large changes in the H-1B visa program. Fluctuations in H-1B admissions levels significantly influence the rate of Indian and Chinese patenting in cities and firms dependent upon the program relative to their peers. Most specifications find weak crowding-in effects or no effect at all for native patenting.     AN ANALYSIS OF THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE ADMINISTRATIVE SANCTIONS SYSTEM

    What happens when an Australian servicemember misbehaves? When a serving member of the Australian Defence Force engages in poor performance or behavior that contradicts Defence values, but is not criminal, they may be subject to administrative sanctions. These sanctions are intended to motivate a change in behavior or provide grounds for dismissal. However, there has been little examination of how these sanctions are applied, the impact they have on those the organization wishes to retain, or the fairness of the system. This research begins to address these gaps by using descriptive statistics, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and Linear Probability Models to understand how sanctions are applied to the Australian Army. We find that there was an increase in the use of sanctions from 2011 to 2020. Soldiers in 2020 were 75% more likely to receive a sanction compared to 2011. Additionally, receiving a sanction early in one's career is linked to a shorter length of service. Our findings also revealed some variability in supervisor decision-making, indicating a lack of consistency in the application of sanctions. Furthermore, we find that there is some correlation between the location where a member is posted and the likelihood of receiving a sanction.
