    Feshbach projection operator approach to positron annihilation

A key aspect of the present approach is the fact that no direct vibrational excitation is assumed, i.e., the attachment mechanism is electronic in nature, arising from positron-electron correlation-polarization forces, and energy transfer to the nuclei essentially follows from the difference between the potential-energy surfaces of the isolated target and the positron-molecule compound; moreover, no a priori assumption is made on the character of the transient (bound or virtual state). An approximate relation between the annihilation parameter Z(eff) and the vibrationally summed cross section is presented, as well as a hierarchy of approximations that may allow for elaborate model calculations. We also discuss how important aspects of the annihilation process are taken into account in the present theory, such as isotope effects, vibrational energy redistribution and relative strengths among vibrational resonances. For completeness, semiempirical model calculations for acetylene and ethylene are presented.     Application of fuzzy logic and geostatistic in the analysis of the fertility of a soil under pasture

    The objective of this research was to generate a representation of the chemical attributes of the soil, using fuzzy logic and geostatistic analysis as procedures of appropriate mapping to the representation of continuous phenomena. The area in study is located in the south of Espirito Santo state, county district of Alegre. The experiment was done in an Ultisol Yellow-Red loamy texture under cultivation of pasture Brachiaria decumbens The soil was sampled in the depth of 0-0,2 m, in the 64 points of a regular grid, with dimension of 90 x 90 m. The studied chemical attributes were K, Ca, Mg, Al. SB, T and V It took place a continuous classification (if the attributes, using the fuzzy logic The data were submitted to the descriptive analysis and, soon afterwards. the geostatistic analysis. through the semivariograms adjustment. The attributes presented moderate and high variability measured by CV. All of the attributes presented spatial dependence, demonstrated by the adjustment of the spherical and the exponential semivariogram The maps in study presented a mild representation of the limits of variation of the degrees of pertinence of the chemical attributes of the soil, turning them more representative The fuzzy logic associated to the geostatistic analysis is it suitable technique to be applied to generate a representation of soils attributes, which naturally present a gradual variation in the land.40332333

    Are isomeric alkenes used in species recognition among neo-tropical stingless bees (Melipona spp)

    The majority of our understanding of the role of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) in recognition is based largely on temperate ant species and honey bees. The stingless bees remain relatively poorly studied, despite being the largest group of eusocial bees, comprising more than 400 species in some 60 genera. The Meliponini and Apini diverged between 80-130 Myr B.P. so the evolutionary trajectories that shaped the chemical communication systems in ants, honeybees and stingless bees may be very different. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to study if a unique species CHC signal existed in Neotropical stingless bees, as shown for many temperate species, and if so what compounds are involved. This was achieved by collecting CHC data from 24 colonies belonging to six species of Melipona from North-eastern Brazil and comparing this new data with all previously published CHC studies on Melipona. We found that each of the eleven Melipona species studied so far each produced a unique species CHC signal based around their alkene isomer production. A remarkable number of alkene isomers, up to 25 in M. asilvai, indicated the diversification of alkene positional isomers among the stingless bees. The only other group to have really diversified in alkene isomer production are the primitively eusocial Bumblebees (Bombus spp), which are the sister group of the stingless bees. Furthermore, among the eleven Neotropical Melipona species we could detect no effect of the environment on the proportion of alkane production as has been suggested for some other species

    Developing a method to derive alcohol-attributable fractions for HIV/AIDS mortality based on alcohol's impact on adherence to antiretroviral medication

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Alcohol consumption is causally linked to nonadherence to antiretroviral treatment that in turn causes an increase in HIV/AIDS mortality. This article presents a method to calculate the percentage of HIV/AIDS deaths attributable to alcohol consumption and the associated uncertainty.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>By combining information on risk relations from a number of published sources, we estimated alcohol-attributable fractions (AAFs) of HIV/AIDS in a stepwise procedure. First, we estimated the effect of alcohol consumption on adherence to antiretroviral treatment, and then we combined this estimate with the impact of nonadherence on death. The 95% uncertainty intervals were computed by estimating the variance of the AAFs using Taylor series expansions of one and multiple variables. AAFs were determined for each of the five Global Burden of Disease regions of Africa, based on country-specific treatment and alcohol consumption data from 2005.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The effects of alcohol on HIV/AIDS in the African Global Burden of Disease regions range from 0.03% to 0.34% for men and from 0% to 0.17% for women, depending on region and age category. The detrimental effect of alcohol consumption was statistically significant in every region and age category except for the North Africa/Middle East region.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although the method has its limitations, it was shown to be feasible and provided estimates of the impact of alcohol use on the mortality outcome of HIV/AIDS.</p

    The Impact of Echo Time Shifts and Temporal Signal Fluctuations on BOLD Sensitivity in Presurgical Planning at 7 T.

    OBJECTIVES: Gradients in the static magnetic field caused by tissues with differing magnetic susceptibilities lead to regional variations in the effective echo time, which modifies both image signal and BOLD sensitivity. Local echo time changes are not considered in the most commonly used metric for BOLD sensitivity, temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR), but may be significant, particularly at ultrahigh field close to air cavities (such as the sinuses and ear canals) and near gross brain pathologies and postoperative sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have studied the effect of local variations in echo time and tSNR on BOLD sensitivity in 3 healthy volunteers and 11 patients with tumors, postoperative cavities, and venous malformations at 7 T. Temporal signal-to-noise ratio was estimated from a 5-minute run of resting state echo planar imaging with a nominal echo time of 22 milliseconds. Maps of local echo time were derived from the phase of a multiecho GE scan. One healthy volunteer performed 10 runs of a breath-hold task. The t-map from this experiment served as a criterion standard BOLD sensitivity measure. Two runs of a less demanding breath-hold paradigm were used for patients. RESULTS: In all subjects, a strong reduction in the echo time (from 22 milliseconds to around 11 milliseconds) was found close to the ear canals and sinuses. These regions were characterized by high tSNR but low t-values in breath-hold t-maps. In some patients, regions of particular interest in presurgical planning were affected by reductions in the echo time to approximately 13-15 milliseconds. These included the primary motor cortex, Broca's area, and auditory cortex. These regions were characterized by high tSNR values (70 and above). Breath-hold results were corrupted by strong motion artifacts in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: Criterion standard BOLD sensitivity estimation using hypercapnic experiments is challenging, especially in patient populations. Taking into consideration the tSNR, commonly used for BOLD sensitivity estimation, but ignoring local reductions in the echo time (eg, from 22 to 11 milliseconds), would erroneously suggest functional sensitivity sufficient to map BOLD signal changes. It is therefore important to consider both local variations in the echo time and temporal variations in signal, using the product metric of these two indices for instance. This should ensure a reliable estimation of BOLD sensitivity and to facilitate the identification of potential false-negative results. This is particularly true at high fields, such as 7 T and in patients with large pathologies and postoperative cavities

    The clinical relevance of distortion correction in presurgical fMRI at 7 T

    Presurgical planning with fMRI benefits from increased reliability and the possibility to reduce measurement time introduced by using ultra-high field. Echo-planar imaging suffers, however, from geometric distortions which scale with field strength and potentially give rise to clinically significant displacement of functional activation. We evaluate the effectiveness of a dynamic distortion correction (DDC) method based on unmodified single-echo EPI in the context of simulated presurgical planning fMRI at 7 T and compare it with static distortion correction (SDC). The extent of distortion in EPI and activation shifts are investigated in a group of eleven patients with a range of neuropathologies who performed a motor task. The consequences of neglecting to correct images for susceptibility-induced distortions are assessed in a clinical context. It was possible to generate time series of EPI-based field maps which were free of artifacts in the eloquent brain areas relevant to presurgical fMRI, despite the presence of signal dropouts caused by pathologies and post-operative sites. Distortions of up to 5.1 mm were observed in the primary motor cortex in raw EPI. These were accurately corrected with DDC and slightly less accurately with SDC. The dynamic nature of distortions in UHF clinical fMRI was demonstrated via investigation of temporal variation in voxel shift maps, confirming the potential inadequacy of SDC based on a single reference field map, particularly in the vicinity of pathologies or in the presence of motion. In two patients, the distortion correction was potentially clinically significant in that it might have affected the localization or interpretation of activation and could thereby have influenced the treatment plan. Distortion correction is shown to be effective and clinically relevant in presurgical planning at 7 T

    Comparison of Three Commercially Available Dengue NS1 Antigen Capture Assays for Acute Diagnosis of Dengue in Brazil

    Dengue is the one of the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral diseases in tropical regions of the world. Manifestations may vary from asymptomatic to potentially fatal complications. Laboratorial diagnosis is essential to diagnose dengue and differentiate it from other diseases. Dengue virus non-structural protein 1 (NS1) may be used as a marker of acute dengue virus infection. Our results, based in the comparison of three NS1 antigen capture assays available, have shown that this approach is reliable for the early diagnosis of dengue infections, especially in the first four days after the onset of the symptoms. A lower sensitivity was observed in DENV-3 cases. Serum positive by virus isolation were more often detected than those positive by RT-PCR by all three assays. Only the Platelia™ NS1 test showed a higher sensitivity in confirming primary infections than secondary ones. In conclusion, NS1 antigen capture commercial kits are useful for diagnosis of acute primary and secondary dengue infections and, in endemic countries where secondary infections are expected to occur, may be used in combination with MAC-ELISA to increase the overall sensitivity of both tests

    Taxonomic review of Saguinus mystax (Spix, 1823) (Primates, Callitrichidae), and description of a new species

    Although the Amazon has the greatest diversity of primates, there are still taxonomic uncertainties for many taxa, such as the species of the Saguinus mystax group. The most geographically broadly distributed and phenotypically diverse species in this group is S. mystax, and its phenotypic diversity has been recognized as three subspecies—S. mystax mystax, S. mystax pileatus and S. mystax pluto—with non-overlapping geographic distributions. In this sense, we carried out an extensive field survey in their distribution areas and used a framework of taxonomic hypothesis testing of genomic data combined with an integrative taxonomic decision-making framework to carry out a taxonomic revision of S. mystax. Our tests supported the existence of three lineages/species. The first species corresponds to Saguinus mystax mystax from the left bank of the Juruá River, which was raised to the species level, and we also discovered and described animals from the Juruá–Tefé interfluve previously attributed to S. mystax mystax as a new species. The subspecies S. m. pileatus and S. m. pluto are recognized as a single species, under a new nomenclatural combination. However, given their phenotypic distinction and allopatric distribution, they potentially are a manifestation of an early stage of speciation, and therefore we maintain their subspecific designations
