    Effect of Ceramic Dust as Partial Replacement of Cement on Lightweight Foamed Concrete

    Disposal of waste into the landfill causes a severe impact on the environment. One of the waste products is ceramic waste. Ceramic waste has some excellent properties in its durability, hardness, and highly resistant to biological, chemical, and physical degradation forces. These excellent properties of the ceramic waste may make it suitable to be used in concrete. This study investigates the effect on the compressive strength of lightweight foamed concrete with different percentage of ceramic dust replacement level towards the cement and three different levels of water-cement ratio. 0%, 5%, 15%, and 25% of replacement level with 0.52, 0.56, and 0.60 water-cement ratios respectively for each replacement level was used as the parameter to investigate the fresh properties, and strength performance of lightweight foamed concrete. The stability and consistency of every mix are studied as well. From this study, it was observed that the incorporation of ceramic waste dust partially replaced the cement did not affect on the fresh properties of the foamed concrete. However, the compressive strength of foamed concrete affected by ceramic waste dust partially replaced the cement

    A Comparative Study of Deep Learning Model and Simple Prediction Charts in Construction Noise Prediction

    Construction noise monitoring is crucial to assess the impacts of construction noise on the workers and surroundings. However, the existing noise prediction methods are time-consuming in which required laborious work for the computation of noise levels. This study aims to assess the accuracy and reliability of deep learning model (DL) that adopted stochastic modelling and artificial neural network (ANN) in construction noise prediction. The artificial neural network was trained with the output of stochastic modelling. The outcome of noise level prediction using simple prediction chart (SPC) and DL model was discussed and compared to 3 case studies. The case studies were conducted at construction sites located in Semenyih, Selangor, Malaysia. The results of DL model showed high accuracy of predicted noise levels along with an absolute difference of less than 2.3 dBA. Besides, the predicted noise levels are reliable as the R-squared value is higher than 0.992. On that account, DL model is proved to be reliable and accurate in noise level prediction and it has the potential to be utilized as a managerial tool to monitor construction noise more effectively

    Characteristics of the global copper raw materials and scrap trade systems and the policy impacts of China's import ban

    Copper raw materials (CRM) and copper waste and scrap (CWS) are the two main sources of copper manufactured products. Due to the uneven geographical distribution of copper production and consumption, international CRM and CWS trade developed. However, no study has explored the complicated interdependencies between CRM trade and CWS trade or investigated the characteristics of this multiplex trade system. This study uses trade records from 1988 to 2017 to construct multiplex trade networks: a global CRM trade network and a global CWS trade network. The evolution of copper trade from 1988 to 2017 is reviewed, and the intricate relationships in the multiplex trade network are identified. It is found that CWS trade has a highly positive correlation with CRM trade, but there are obvious differences between CWS trade and CRM trade in the multilateral trade structure. Multilateral trade structures driven by core exporting countries and core importing countries are prominent in CRM trade and CWS trade, respectively. In addition, the impacts of China's restrictive policies on the multiplex trade system are analyzed. The results provide policy implications for countries regarding copper resource security strategies and safeguarding the multiplex trading system.</p

    Assessing Sustainable Consumption in Packaged Food in Indonesia: Corporate Communication Drives Consumer Perception and Behavior

    Sustainable consumption has been addressed in the literature in recent years, especially in relation to changing from a traditional consumption to sustainable consumption. Reducing environmental impacts from waste generation has been the focal point of sustainable consumption. However, a large number of attributes has caused a complexity in understanding which attributes effectively enhance the consumption. In particular, sustainable consumption has been facing a negative trend due to low levels of knowledge about packaging’s environmental impact, failed communication which leads to misperception and irresponsible behavior. This study contributes to proposing a set of attributes for enhancing sustainable consumption in the Indonesian food industry, to fulfill the lack of understanding of the attribute interrelationships using qualitative information. This study proposes a set of attributes to enhance sustainable consumption with qualitative information by assessing the interrelationships among the attributes employing the Delphi method and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method to provide causal and effect relationships. As a result, corporate communication, consumer perception, consumer behavior, and product packaging are major aspects for sustainable consumption enhancement. Corporate communication becomes a major driver to affect perception and behavior.     Structure of the Global Plastic Waste Trade Network and the Impact of China's Import Ban

    Millions of tonnes (teragrams) of plastic waste are traded around the world every year, which plays an important role in partially substituting virgin plastics as a source of raw materials in plastic product manufacturing. In this paper, global plastic waste trade networks (GPWTNs) from 1988 to 2017 are established using the UN-Comtrade database. The spatiotemporal evolution of the GPWTNs is analyzed. Attention is given to the country ranks, inter- and intra-continental trade flows, and geo-visual communities in the GPWTNs. We also evaluate the direct and indirect impacts of China’s plastic waste import ban on the GPWTNs. The results show that the GPWTNs have small-world and scale-free properties and a core-periphery structure. The geography of the plastic waste trade is structured by Asia as the dominant importer and North America and Europe as the largest sources of plastic waste. China is the unrivaled colossus in the global plastic waste trade. After China’s import ban, the plastic waste trade flows have been largely redirected to Southeast Asian countries. Compared with import countries, export countries are more important for the robustness of GPWTNs. Clearly, developed countries will not announce bans on plastic waste exports; these countries have strong motivation to continue to shift plastic waste to poorer countries. However, the import bans from developing countries will compel developed countries to build new disposal facilities and deal with their plastic waste domestically

    We study the Cauchy-Matern (CM) process with long-range dependence (LRD). The closed form of its power spectrum density (PSD) function is given. We apply it to model the autocovariance function (ACF) and the PSD of the sea surface wind speed (wind speed for short) observed in the Lake Worth, Florida, over the 1984–2006 period. The present results exhibit that the wind speed at the Lake Worth over 1984–2006 is of LRD. The present results exhibit that the CM process may yet be a novel model to fit the wind speed there

    Facile synthesis of graphene via direct water-sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate exfoliation

    In this study, a mild, one-step electrochemical exfoliation was demonstrated for the synthesis of graphene with the assistance of water and a surfactant, particularly sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate and sodium dodecyl sulphate. Different types of water-surfactant solutions in different concentrations could influence the exfoliation of graphite rods. From one to several layers of graphene flakes (with a thickness of approximately 1 nm) could be produced directly after sonication. AFM images showed that the flake diameters from this source were typically small. Raman and IR spectroscopic analyses of the dispersed phase suggested that the exfoliation of graphene sheets was accomplished. The flakes were also characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry techniques. Further improvements in this methodology may pave the way to develop green, cost-effective, and large-scale production methods for graphene sheets

    Flexible graphene-based supercapacitors: a review

    The recent rapid growth in graphene-based supercapacitors has reached the point where there is a need for solid-state devices with physical flexibility, which will be a crucial advantage in modern electronic devices. Herein, we summarize recent developments toward an all solid-state graphene-based flexible supercapacitor. The routes to produce graphene-based electrode materials, along with the typical fabrication techniques for flexible devices, are thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, the structural morphology of the electrode materials is closely related to the electrochemical performance, and the influence of the electrode components on the mechanical flexibility of the fabricated devices is examined. Lastly, a summary of the overall electrochemical properties and current development of the reported devices is presented progressively to predict the future trends toward the realization of an ultimate-performance graphene-based flexible supercapacitor

    Sustainable social supply chain practices and firm social performance: framework and empirical evidence

    Concerns about social sustainability issues such as child labour, inequality, excessive overtime, and abusive working and living conditions in developing countries' manufacturing sectors have prompted an urgent study on sustainable social supply chain practices. The social pillar of sustainability has then been unnoticed, favouring the more regularly discussed environmental and economic dimensions. This study aims to expand the social sustainability framework to investigate the impact of sustainable social supply chain practices on firm social performance. The electronic survey was conducted on firms that adopted sustainable social practices. The 144 data sets were received from manufacturing firms. The data were analysed using structural equation modelling with PLS-SEM to examine domains and outcomes of sustainable supply chain practices. The result found that social supply chain practices impact the firm's social performance. However, the results indicate that the social element of sustainable procurement does not affect the firm social performance. The results show social fairness challenged manufacturing firms to comply with sustainable production and distribution. Most manufacturing firms are still not aware of their role and social responsibility to develop the local suppliers and community. Sustainability framework has proposed to raise awareness of sustainable practices that drive firms to implement sustainable social supply chain practices and leverage social performance. By being socially responsible, firms can gain improved brand awareness, a favourable corporate reputation, increased sales, observed firm growth and enhanced customer loyalty
