Unusual reticulin staining pattern in well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Special stains, such as reticulin stain and CD34 immunostain, are very helpful in the diagnosis of well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Most studies have shown that absent or decreased reticulin stain or an abnormal reticulin pattern with widened trabeculae is reliable for the diagnosis of well-differentiated HCC.</p> <p>Case report</p> <p>We report here two cases of well differentiated HCC with an unusual reticulin staining pattern. A strongly positive reticulin network was preserved within the tumor, which surrounded individual tumor cells in a monolayered trabecular pattern. At the same time, an increased CD34 stain was present in the tumor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This unusual reticulin pattern represents part of the diverse reticulin staining patterns seen in HCC. Although this staining pattern is rare, it should be recognized when diagnosing well-differentiated HCC in small samples such as cellblock of fine needle aspiration or small core biopsies.</p
Connecting the Holographic and Wilsonian Renormalization Groups
Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we develop an explicit formal duality
between the planar limit of a d-dimensional gauge theory and a classical field
theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The key ingredient is the
identification of fields in AdS with generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich
transforms of single-trace couplings of the QFT. We show that the Wilsonian
renormalization group flow of these transformed couplings matches the
holographic (Hamilton-Jacobi) flow of bulk fields along the radial direction in
AdS. This result allows one to outline an AdS/CFT dictionary that does not rely
on string theory.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure; metadata modified in v2; added references and

The Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Viscosity Bound with Six-Derivative Corrections
The weak gravity conjecture and the shear viscosity to entropy density bound
place constraints on low energy effective field theories that may help to
distinguish which theories can be UV completed. Recently, there have been
suggestions of a possible correlation between the two constraints. In some
interesting cases, the behavior was precisely such that the conjectures were
mutually exclusive. Motivated by these works, we study the mass to charge and
shear viscosity to entropy density ratios for charged AdS5 black branes, which
are holographically dual to four-dimensional CFTs at finite temperature. We
study a family of four-derivative and six-derivative perturbative corrections
to these backgrounds. We identify the region in parameter space where the two
constraints are satisfied and in particular find that the inclusion of the
next-to-leading perturbative correction introduces wider possibilities for the
satisfaction of both constraints.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, v2: published version, refs added, minor

Temperament and parental child-rearing style: unique contributions to clinical anxiety disorders in childhood
Both temperament and parental child-rearing style are found to be associated with childhood anxiety disorders in population studies. This study investigates the contribution of not only temperament but also parental child-rearing to clinical childhood anxiety disorders. It also investigates whether the contribution of temperament is moderated by child-rearing style, as is suggested by some studies in the general population. Fifty children were included (25 with anxiety disorders and 25 non-clinical controls). Child-rearing and the childâs temperament were assessed by means of parental questionnaire (Child Rearing Practices Report (CRPR) (Block in The Child-Rearing Practices Report. Institute of Human Development. University of California, Berkely, 1965; The Child-Rearing Practices Report (CRPR): a set of Q items for the description of parental socialisation attitudes and values. Unpublished manuscript. Institute of Human Development. University of California, Berkely, 1981), EAS Temperament Survey for Children (Boer and Westenberg in J Pers Assess 62:537â551, 1994; Buss and Plomin in Temperament: early developing personality traits. Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc, Hillsdale, 1984s). Analysis of variance showed that anxiety-disordered children scored significantly higher on the temperamental characteristics emotionality and shyness than non-clinical control children. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses showed that temperament (emotionality and shyness) and child-rearing style (more parental negative affect, and less encouraging independence of the child) both accounted for a unique proportion of the variance of anxiety disorders. Preliminary results suggest that child-rearing style did not moderate the association between childrenâs temperament and childhood anxiety disorders. The limited sample size might have been underpowered to assess this interaction
The importance of left ventricular function for long-term outcome after primary percutaneous coronary intervention
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the present study we sought to determine the long-term prognostic value of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), assessed by planar radionuclide ventriculography (PRV), after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In total 925 patients underwent PRV for LVEF assessment after PPCI for myocardial infarction before discharge from the hospital. PRV was performed with a standard dose of 500 Mbq of 99mTc-pertechnetate. Average follow-up time was 2.5 years.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean (± SD) age was 60 ± 12 years. Mean (± SD) LVEF was 45.7 ± 12.2 %. 1 year survival was 97.3 % and 3 year survival was 94.2 %. Killip class, multi vessel-disease, previous cardiovascular events, peak creatin kinase and its MB fraction, age and LVEF proved to be univariate predictors of mortality. When entered in a forward conditional Cox regression model age and LVEF were independent predictors of 1 and 3 year mortality.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>LVEF assessed by PRV is a powerful independent predictor of long term mortality after PPCI for STEMI.</p
Assessing the influence of the built environment on physical activity for utility and recreation in suburban metro Vancouver
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Physical inactivity and associated co-morbidities such as obesity and cardiovascular disease are estimated to have large societal costs. There is increasing interest in examining the role of the built environment in shaping patterns of physical activity. However, few studies have: (1) simultaneously examined physical activity for leisure and utility; (2) selected study areas with a range of built environment characteristics; and (3) assessed the built environment using high-resolution land use data.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data on individuals used for this study are from a survey of 1602 adults in selected sites across suburban Metro Vancouver. Four types of physical activity were assessed: walking to work/school, walking for errands, walking for leisure and moderate physical activity for exercise. The built environment was assessed by constructing one-kilometre road network buffers around each respondent's postal code. Measures of the built environment include terciles of recreational and park land, residential land, institutional land, commercial land and land use mix.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Logistic regression analyses showed that walking to work/school and moderate physical activity were not associated with any built environment measure. Living in areas with lower land use mix, lower commercial and lower recreational land increased the odds of low levels of walking for errands. Individuals living in the lower third of land use mix and institutional land were more likely to report low levels of walking for leisure.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that walking for errands and leisure have a greater association with the built environment than other dimensions of physical activity.</p
No rapid audiovisual recalibration in adults on the autism spectrum
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by difficulties in social cognition, but are also associated with atypicalities in sensory and perceptual processing. Several groups have reported that autistic individuals show reduced integration of socially relevant audiovisual signals, which may contribute to the higher-order social and cognitive difficulties observed in autism. Here we use a newly devised technique to study instantaneous adaptation to audiovisual asynchrony in autism. Autistic and typical participants were presented with sequences of brief visual and auditory stimuli, varying in asynchrony over a wide range, from 512âms auditory-lead to 512âms auditory-lag, and judged whether they seemed to be synchronous. Typical adults showed strong adaptation effects, with trials proceeded by an auditory-lead needing more auditory-lead to seem simultaneous, and vice versa. However, autistic observers showed little or no adaptation, although their simultaneity curves were as narrow as the typical adults. This result supports recent Bayesian models that predict reduced adaptation effects in autism. As rapid audiovisual recalibration may be fundamental for the optimisation of speech comprehension, recalibration problems could render language processing more difficult in autistic individuals, hindering social communication
