    COVID-19 disruption reveals mass-tourism pressure on nearshore sea turtle distributions and access to optima breeding habitat

    Quantifying the extent to which animals detect and respond to human presence allows us to identify pressure (disturbance) and inform conservation management objectively; however, obtaining baselines against which to compare human impact is hindered in areas where human activities are already well established. For example, Zakynthos Island (Greece, Mediterranean) receives around 850,000 visitors each summer, while supporting an important loggerhead sea turtle rookery (~300 individuals/season). The coronavirus (COVID-19)-driven absence of tourism in May–June 2020 provided an opportunity to evaluate the distribution dynamics of this population in the absence (2020) vs. presence (2018 and 2019) of visitors using programmed unmanned aerial system (UAS) surveys. Ambient sea temperature transitioned from suboptimal for breeding in May to optimal in late June, with turtle distribution appearing to shift from shallow (to benefit from waters 3–5°C above ambient) to deeper waters in 2018 and 2019, but not 2020. The 2020 data set demonstrated that increased tourism pressure, not temperature, drives turtles offshore. Specifically, >50% of turtles remained within 100 m of shore at densities of 25–50 visitors/km, even when sea temperature rose, with 2018 and 2019 data supporting this trend. Reduced access to warmer, nearshore waters by tourism could delay the onset of nesting and increase the length of the egg maturation period between nesting events (internesting interval) at this site. A coastal refuge zone could be delimited in May–June where touristic infrastructure is minimal, but also where turtles frequently aggregate. In conclusion, sea turtles appear capable of perceiving changes in the level of human pressure at fine spatial and temporal scales and adjusting their distribution accordingly

    Hydrogen diffusion and the percolation of austenite in nanostructured bainitic steel

    The diffusion of hydrogen in austenite is slower than in ferrite. Experiments have been conducted to study the behaviour of hydrogen in a nanostructured steel sample consisting of a mixture of thin plates of bainitic ferrite and intervening films of retained austenite, with the latter phase present in a quantity larger than the percolation threshold, i.e. it has three-dimensional connectivity. The structure was then heat treated to control the fraction of austenite, and hence to study the role of hydrogen when the austenite decomposes below the value required to sustain percolation. The experiments have involved both thermal desorption analysis and permeation, and when combined with theoretical analysis, indicate a significant influence of percolating austenite in hindering the passage of hydrogen into the steel during hydrogen charging, and its permeation through the composite nanostructure. The effect is not as large as might be expected from a simple comparison of independent data on the diffusivities of hydrogen in the two lattices, because the effective diffusivity in ferrite is found to be much smaller than in the defect-free ferrite, owing to trapping effects. The morphology of the austenite is demonstrated to play a role by comparing with a sample containing a larger volume fraction of austenite but present as isolated grains which are ineffective to the permeation of hydrogen.X1199Ysciescopu

    Post-exercise hypotension and its hemodynamic determinants depend on the calculation approach

    Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) has been assessed by three calculation approaches: I = (post-exercise − pre-exercise), II = (post-exercise − post-control), and III = [(post-exercise − pre-exercise) − (post-control − pre-control)]. This study checked whether these calculation approaches influence PEH and its determinants. For that, 30 subjects underwent two exercise (cycling, 45 min, 50% VO2 peak) and two control (seated rest, 45 min) sessions. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures, cardiac output (CO), systemic vascular resistance (SVR), heart rate (HR), and stroke volume (SV) were measured pre- and post-interventions in each session. The mean value for each moment in each type of session was calculated, and responses to exercise were analyzed with each approach (I, II, and III) to evaluate the occurrence of PEH and its determinants. Systolic PEH was significant when calculated by all approaches (I = −5 ± 1, II = −11 ± 2, and III = −11 ± 2 mmHg, p < 0.05), while diastolic PEH was only significant when calculated by approaches II and III (−6 ± 1 and −6 ± 1 mmHg, respectively, p < 0.05). CO decreased significantly after the exercise when calculated by approach I, but remained unchanged with approaches II and III, while SVR increased significantly with approach I, but decreased significantly with approaches II and III. HR was unchanged after the exercise with approach I, but increased significantly with approaches II and III, while SV decreased significantly with all approaches. Thus, PEH and its hemodynamic determinants are influenced by the calculation approach, which should be considered when designing, analyzing, and comparing PEH studies

    Strength and toughness of clean nanostructured bainite

    A nanostructured steel has been produced using a clean steel-making technique. The mechanical properties have been comprehensively characterised. The maximum strength of the material recorded was 2.2 GPa at yield, with an ultimate tensile strength of 2.5 GPa, accompanied by a Charpy impact energy of 5 J, achieved by heat treatment to refine the prior austenite grain size from 145 to 20 µm. This increased the strength by 40% and the Charpy V-notch energy more than doubled. In terms of resistance of the hardness to tempering, the behaviour observed was similar to previous alloys. Despite reducing the hardness and strength, tempering was observed to reduce the plane-strain fracture toughness.This work was supported by Rolls-Royce
