Conductance quantization and snake states in graphene magnetic waveguides

We consider electron waveguides (quantum wires) in graphene created by suitable inhomogeneous magnetic fields. The properties of uni-directional snake states are discussed. For a certain magnetic field profile, two spatially separated counter-propagating snake states are formed, leading to conductance quantization insensitive to backscattering by impurities or irregularities of the magnetic field.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, final version accepted as Rapid Comm. in PR

Making the most of housing and growth in the East Midlands: a report on removing the barriers to low public investment in the region

The Smith Institute, in association with the Economic Strategy Research Bureau at Nottingham Business School, has undertaken an investigation into the lack of central government investment in the East Midlands in housing and physical regeneration. The work has been based on desk research, two round tables with stakeholders (in Nottingham and Melton Mowbray) and interviews with over 30 decision makers, experts and opinion formers from across the region. The objectives of the report were: first, to quantify the reduction in central government investment in the region compared with other regions; second, to suggest reasons why this might have occurred; third, to consider the impact that this might be having on the implementation of government policies such as housing provision, “rebalancing” the economy and achieving greater value for money for government investment. The report concludes with a number of recommendations for local enterprise partnerships (LEPs), local authorities, the housing sector and central government

Ground noise measurements during static and flyby operations of the Cessna 02-T turbine powered airplane

The field noise measurements on the Cessna 02-T turbine powered propeller aircraft are presented. The objective of the study was to obtain the basic noise characteristics of the aircraft during static ground runs and flyover tests, to identify the sources of the noise, and to correlate the noises with the aircraft operating conditions. The results are presented in the form of a overall noise levels, radiation patterns, and frequency spectra. The noise characteristics of the turbine powered aircraft are compared with those of the reciprocating engine powered aircraft
