Extended Constant Power Speed Range of the Brushless DC Motor Through Dual Mode Inverter Control
The trapezoidal back electromotive force (emf) brushless direct current (dc) motor (BDCM) with surface-mounted magnets has high-power density and efficiency especially when rare-earth magnet materials are used. Traction applications, such as electric vehicles, could benefit significantly from the use of such motors. Unfortunately, a practical means for driving the motor over a constant power speed ratio (CPSR) of 5:1 or more has not yet been developed. A key feature of these motors is that they have low internal inductance. The phase advance method is effective in controlling the motor power over such a speed range, but the current at high speed may be several times greater than that required at the base speed. The increase in current during high-speed operation is due to the low motor inductance and the action of the bypass diodes of the inverter. The use of such a control would require increased current rating of the inverter semiconductors and additional cooling for the inverter, where the conduction losses increase proportionally with current, and especially for the motor, where the losses increase with the square of the current. The high current problems of phase advance can be mitigated by adding series inductance; however, this reduces power density, requires significant increase in supply voltage, and leaves the CPSR performance of the system highly sensitive to variations in the available voltage. A new inverter topology and control scheme has been developed that can drive low-inductance BDCMs over the CPSR that would be required in electric vehicle applications. This new controller is called the dual-mode inverter control (DMIC). It is shown that the BDCM has an infinite CPSR when it is driven by the DMIC
Hybrid fiber reinforcement and crack formation in cementitious composite materials
The use of different types of fibers simultaneously for reinforcing cementitious
matrices is motivated by the concept of a multi-scale nature of the
crack propagation process. Fibers with different geometrical and mechanical properties
are used to bridge cracks of different sizes from the micro- to the macroscale.
In this study, the performance of different fiber reinforced cementitious
composites is assessed in terms of their tensile stress-crack opening behavior. The
results obtained from this investigation allow a direct quantitative comparison of
the behavior obtained from the different fiber reinforcement systems. The research
described in this paper shows that the multi-scale conception of cracking and the
use of hybrid fiber reinforcements do not necessarily result in an improved tensile
behavior of the composite. Particular material design requirements may nevertheless

Doppler-free frequency modulation spectroscopy of atomic erbium in a hollow cathode discharge cell
The erbium atomic system is a promising candidate for an atomic Bose-Einstein
condensate of atoms with a non-vanishing orbital angular momentum ()
of the electronic ground state. In this paper we report on the frequency
stabilization of a blue external cavity diode laser system on the 400.91
laser cooling transition of atomic erbium. Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy
is applied within a hollow cathode discharge tube to the corresponding
electronic transition of several of the erbium isotopes. Using the technique of
frequency modulation spectroscopy, a zero-crossing error signal is produced to
lock the diode laser frequency on the atomic erbium resonance. The latter is
taken as a reference laser to which a second main laser system, used for laser
cooling of atomic erbium, is frequency stabilized

Using job strain and organizational justice models to predict multiple forms of employee performance behaviours among Australian policing personnel
The overall purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between stress-related working conditions and three forms of employee performance behaviours: in-role behaviours, citizenship behaviours directed at other individuals and citizenship behaviours directed at the organization. The potentially stressful working conditions were based on the job strain model (incorporating job demands, job control and social support) as well as organizational justice theory. A sample of Australian-based police officers (n = 640) took part in this study and the data were collected via a mail-out survey. Multiple regression analyses were undertaken to assess both the strength and the nature of the relationships between the working conditions and employee performance and these analyses included tests for additive, interactional and curvilinear effects. The overall results indicated that a significant proportion of the explained variance in all three outcome measures was attributed to the additive effects of demand, control and support. The level of variance associated with the organizational justice dimensions was relatively small, although there were signs that specific dimensions of justice may provide unique insights into the relationship between job stressors and employee performance. The implications of these and other notable findings are discussed.<br /
Feedback Vertex Sets in Tournaments
We study combinatorial and algorithmic questions around minimal feedback
vertex sets in tournament graphs.
On the combinatorial side, we derive strong upper and lower bounds on the
maximum number of minimal feedback vertex sets in an n-vertex tournament. We
prove that every tournament on n vertices has at most 1.6740^n minimal feedback
vertex sets, and that there is an infinite family of tournaments, all having at
least 1.5448^n minimal feedback vertex sets. This improves and extends the
bounds of Moon (1971).
On the algorithmic side, we design the first polynomial space algorithm that
enumerates the minimal feedback vertex sets of a tournament with polynomial
delay. The combination of our results yields the fastest known algorithm for
finding a minimum size feedback vertex set in a tournament
Multiple drivers of decline in the global status of freshwater crayfish (Decapoda: Astacidea)
International audienceRates of biodiversity loss are higher in freshwater ecosystems than in most terrestrial or marine ecosystems, making freshwater conservation a priority. However, prioritization methods are impeded by insufficient knowledge on the distribution and conservation status of freshwater taxa, particularly invertebrates. We evaluated the extinction risk of the world's 590 freshwater crayfish species using the IUCN Categories and Criteria and found 32% of all species are threatened with extinction. The level of extinction risk differed between families, with proportionally more threatened species in the Parastacidae and Astacidae than in the Cambaridae. Four described species were Extinct and 21% were assessed as Data Deficient. There was geographical variation in the dominant threats affecting the main centres of crayfish diversity. The majority of threatened US and Mexican species face threats associated with urban development, pollution, damming and water management. Conversely, the majority of Australian threatened species are affected by climate change, harvesting, agriculture and invasive species. Only a small proportion of crayfish are found within the boundaries of protected areas, suggesting that alternative means of long-term protection will be required. Our study highlights many of the significant challenges yet to come for freshwater biodiversity unless conservation planning shifts from a reactive to proactive approach
Human Resource Flexibility as a Mediating Variable Between High Performance Work Systems and Performance
Much of the human resource management literature has demonstrated the impact of high performance
work systems (HPWS) on organizational performance. A new generation of studies is
emerging in this literature that recommends the inclusion of mediating variables between HPWS
and organizational performance. The increasing rate of dynamism in competitive environments
suggests that measures of employee adaptability should be included as a mechanism that may
explain the relevance of HPWS to firm competitiveness. On a sample of 226 Spanish firms, the
study’s results confirm that HPWS influences performance through its impact on the firm’s
human resource (HR) flexibility
History of clinical transplantation
How transplantation came to be a clinical discipline can be pieced together by perusing two volumes of reminiscences collected by Paul I. Terasaki in 1991-1992 from many of the persons who were directly involved. One volume was devoted to the discovery of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), with particular reference to the human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) that are widely used today for tissue matching.1 The other focused on milestones in the development of clinical transplantation.2 All the contributions described in both volumes can be traced back in one way or other to the demonstration in the mid-1940s by Peter Brian Medawar that the rejection of allografts is an immunological phenomenon.3,4 © 2008 Springer New York
