    Shifting the gaze of the physician from the body to the body in a place: A qualitative analysis of a community-based photovoice approach to teaching place-health concepts to medical students

    Medical practitioners, trained to isolate health within and upon the body of the individual, are now challenged to negotiate research and population health theories that link health status to geographic location as evidence suggests a connection between place and health. This paper builds an integrated place-health model and structural competency analytical framework with nine domains and four levels of proficiency that is utilized to assess a community-based photovoice project’s ability to shift the practice of medicine by medical students from the surface of the body to the body within a place. Analysis of the medical student’s photovoice data demonstrated that the students achieved structural competency level 1 proficiency and came to understand how health might be connected to place represented by six of the nine domains of the structural competency framework. Results suggest that medical student’s engagement with place-health systemic, institutional and structural forces deepens when they co-create narratives of their lived experiences in a place with patients as community members during a community-based photovoice project. Given the importance of place-health theories to explain population health outcomes, a place-health model and structural competency analytical framework utilized during a community-based photovoice project could help medical students merge the image of patients as singular bodies into bodies set within a context

    Inverse Problem for the Yang-Mills Equations

    We show that a connection can be recovered up to gauge from source-to-solution type data associated with the Yang-Mills equations in Minkowski space R1+3. Our proof analyzes the principal symbols of waves generated by suitable nonlinear interactions and reduces the inversion to a broken non-abelian light ray transform. The principal symbol analysis of the interaction is based on a delicate calculation that involves the structure of the Lie algebra under consideration and the final result holds for any compact Lie group.Peer reviewe

    Detection of Hermitian connections in wave equations with cubic non-linearity

    We consider the geometric non-linear inverse problem of recovering a Hermitian connection A from the source-to-solution map of the cubic wave equation square(A)phi + kappa vertical bar phi vertical bar(2) phi = f, where kappa not equal 0 and square(A) is the connection wave operator in the Minkowski space R1+3. The equation arises naturally when considering the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations with Mexican hat type potentials. Our proof exploits the microlocal analysis of non-linear wave interactions, but instead of employing information contained in the geometry of the wave front sets as in previous literature, we study the principal symbols of waves generated by suitable interactions. Moreover, our approach relies on inversion of a novel non-abelian broken light ray transform, a result interesting in its own right.Peer reviewe

    Emergence of Symmetry in Complex Networks

    Many real networks have been found to have a rich degree of symmetry, which is a very important structural property of complex network, yet has been rarely studied so far. And where does symmetry comes from has not been explained. To explore the mechanism underlying symmetry of the networks, we studied statistics of certain local symmetric motifs, such as symmetric bicliques and generalized symmetric bicliques, which contribute to local symmetry of networks. We found that symmetry of complex networks is a consequence of similar linkage pattern, which means that nodes with similar degree tend to share similar linkage targets. A improved version of BA model integrating similar linkage pattern successfully reproduces the symmetry of real networks, indicating that similar linkage pattern is the underlying ingredient that responsible for the emergence of the symmetry in complex networks.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Symmetry breaking in driven and strongly damped pendulum

    We examine the conditions for appearance of symmetry breaking bifurcation in damped and periodically driven pendulum in the case of strong damping. We show that symmetry breaking, unlike other nonlinear phenomena, can exist at high dissipation. We prove that symmetry breaking phases exist between phases of symmetric normal and symmetric inverted oscillations. We find that symmetry broken solutions occupy a sufficiently smaller region of pendulum's parameter space in comparison to the statements made in earlier considerations [McDonald and Plischke, Phys. Rev. B 27 (1983) 201]. Our research on symmetry breaking in a strongly damped pendulum is relevant to an understanding of phenomena of dynamic symmetry breaking and rectification in a pure ac driven semiconductor superlattices.Comment: 11 pages, 4 color figures, RevTeX

    Obtaining coincident image observations for Mission to Planet Earth science data return

    One objective of the Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) program involves comparing data from various instruments on multiple spacecraft to obtain a total picture of the Earth's systems. To correlate image data from instruments on different spacecraft, these spacecraft must be able to image the same location on the Earth at approximately the same time. Depending on the orbits of the spacecraft involved, complicated operational details must be considered to obtain such observations. If the spacecraft are in similar orbits, close formation flying or synchronization techniques may be used to assure coincident observations. If the orbits are dissimilar, the launch time of the second satellite may need to be restricted in order to align its orbit with that of the first satellite launched. This paper examines strategies for obtaining coincident observations for spacecraft in both similar and dissimilar orbits. Although these calculations may be performed easily for coplanar spacecraft, the non-coplanar case involves additional considerations which are incorporated into the algorithms presented herein
