    Search for Extra Space-Dimensions at the LHC

    The introduction of extra space dimensions in the theory could be an elegant way tovsolve the hierarchy problem. There could even be one energy scale at which all interactions could unify. The limits coming from our knowledge of the gravitation at low distance allow this energy scale to be as low as few TeV. This situation is extremely interesting experimentally in the context of the LHC which will cover the range from 100 GeV to few TeV. This article describes the different analyses developed by the LHC experiments to study this new phenomenology.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Identifying Electrophysiological Components of Covert Awareness in Patients with Disorders of Consciousness

    Naturalistic stimuli evoke synchronous patterns of neural activity between individuals in sensory and higher cognitive, “executive” networks of the brain. fMRI paradigms developed to measure this inter-subject synchronization have been extended to test for executive processing in behaviourally non-responsive patients as a neural marker of awareness. This thesis adapted one such paradigm for use in EEG, a low-cost, portable neuroimaging technique that can be administered at a patient’s bedside. Healthy participants listened to a suspenseful auditory narrative during EEG recording. Significant inter-subject synchronization was found throughout the audio but was significantly reduced during a scrambled control condition. This paradigm was then used to evaluate executive processing in a cohort of patients. One locked-in patient and one patient in a vegetative state were significantly synchronized to healthy controls during the audio. EEG is a suitable tool to detect executive processing, a proxy measure of awareness, in patients who are behaviourally non-responsive

    Recovery from mental illness – The experiential perspective

    The purpose of this study is to explore what recovery means to people who have had personal experiences with mental illness. A qualitative design using exploratory and descriptive approaches was used. Two focus groups consisting of seventeen participants were asked questions about their recovery process. The data were categorized and themes emerged from the analysis. This thesis will discuss the four themes that emerged: recovery means stability and growth in a meaningful way; recovery includes a process of self-actualization supported by both natural and professional supports; barriers to recovery; and, facing barriers using steps towards recovery. The findings elaborate on what stability and growth mean to people with a mental illness, the barriers they face, and the steps they believe are necessary to live a meaningful life. This study also discusses the implications for social work practice

    The Use of Powdered Activated Carbon Adsorption for Color Removal

    In this investigation, two separate carbons are evaluated to determine whether they are capable of removing color from paper mill effluent, named Mill A. The two carbons are from Westvaco and from the Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant. The experiment consisted of adding 250 mg carbon of 250 ml of effluent and determining whether, after vacuum filtration, the color was removed using a spectrophotometer. The results proved positive and color was removed in all samples, and with both carbons. After the initial experimental procedure one of the carbons were chosen, Westvaco, and percentages of the 250 mg of carbon were taken. The carbon was added to the 250 ml of effluent and the experiment was run as usual. This data was essential for an isotherm study. After plotting the isotherm graph it was evident that at 100 mg carbon per 250 ml of effluent the carbon was able to remove the color. The 100 mg was used in the determination of the amount of carbon needed for two carbon systems based on a 2 million gallon per day effluent stream. The two types of carbon systems considered are a primary clarifier addition system and a carbon bed system. After analysis of the costs of equipment and carbon costs it became evident that the carbon bed system is the more economical system

    This comment examines the rise of China\u27s middle class and proactive governance to protect its economy from a housing bubble during the global downturn. An analysis of recently enacted Chinese labor and corporate laws demonstrates how the government facilitated the rise of the middle class. The comment discusses the ramifications of strict domestic residential mortgage regulations and how China\u27s tempered investment structure secured its domestic housing market. Part II of this comment examines China\u27s investment and consumption patterns compared to domestic growth. Part III discusses how the surging middle class grew to seek investment opportunities in the real estate market and abroad. Part IV analyzes China\u27s efforts to tame growing interest in the domestic housing market. Part V assesses the shortcomings in U.S. mortgage laws before 2008 and efforts to remedy such oversights, and concludes that China\u27s anticipatory legislating and restrictive investment structure shielded it from depression

    Three-body dynamics in single ionization of atomic hydrogen by 75 keV proton impact

    Doubly differential cross sections (DDCS) for single ionization of atomic hydrogen by 75 keV proton impact have been measured as a function of the projectile scattering angle and energy loss. This pure three-body collision system represents a fundamental test case for the study of the reaction dynamics in few-body systems. A comparison between theory and experiment reveals that three-body dynamics is important at all scattering angles, and that an accurate description of the role of the projectile-target nucleus interaction as well as the second order projectile-electron interaction remains a major challenge to theory. However, progress is being made in understanding these higher order interactions and a better understanding of the collision dynamics seems possible --Abstract, page iii
