    Taiwan, China, and Yang Mu\u27s Alternative to National Narratives

    In her paper, Taiwan, China, and Yang Mu\u27s Alternative to National Narratives, Lisa L.M. Wong examines the ways Yang Mu\u27s poetry acts as an echo and a dissent to the mainstream national narratives in Taiwan between the late 1970s and early 1980s. During this decade, identity discourse has developed from othering Westernism to preserve Chinese cultural-national integrity to espousing a native Taiwanese identity against the Chinese one. Each of Yang\u27s poems in Wong\u27s analysis is a field of contention, peopled by different subjects such as the colonizers, the native Taiwanese, the female, and the diasporant, who articulate contested stories of a historical event or a historical site. The lived experiences of the texts\u27 participants rupture the orthodox narratives, whether it is the Dutch imperialist conquest, the Ming glory of national recovery, or the place-based cultural imaginary of Chang-an. If, as John Berger says, fear of the present leads to mystification of the past, perhaps, hope for the future lies in demystification of the past and the present. Yang\u27s poems are attempts of demystification as well as political critique, they are history plays in which disparate histories play against each other, letting open a myriad of alternatives for addressing national-cultural narratives in post-colonial Taiwan and in contemporary China

    Understanding the role of nanostructuring in photoelectrode performance for light driven water splitting

    The analysis of capacitance data for regular nanostructured photoelectrodes is revisited using a hematite nanorod array as an example. The effects of the cylindrical nanorod geometry on the capacitance voltage behaviour are outlined, and the limiting case of complete depletion is discussed in terms of the residual geometric capacity at the base of the nanorods. Since nanorod arrays generally leave areas of the substrate exposed, it is necessary to consider the parallel capacitance associated with the fraction of uncovered surface. The sensitivity of the capacitance fitting to parameter variation is explored. The enhancement of external quantum efficiency EQE by nanostructuring is also discussed using hematite nanorod arrays as experimental examples. It is shown that, although very substantial EQE enhancement should be achieved by simple geometric effects, the performance of nanostructured hematite electrodes in the visible region of the spectrum is considerably lower than predicted if all charge carriers generated in the space charge region SCR were collected.     Too poor or too far? Partitioning the variability of hospital-based childbirth by poverty and travel time in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and Tanzania

    Background: In sub-Saharan Africa, women are most likely to receive skilled and adequate childbirth care in hospital settings, yet the use of hospital for childbirth is low and inequitable. The poorest and those living furthest away from a hospital are most affected. But the relative contribution of poverty and travel time is convoluted, since hospitals are often located in wealthier urban places and are scarcer in poorer remote area. This study aims to partition the variability in hospital-based childbirth by poverty and travel time in four sub-Saharan African countries. Methods: We used data from the most recent Demographic and Health Survey in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and Tanzania. For each country, geographic coordinates of survey clusters, the master list of hospital locations and a high-resolution map of land surface friction were used to estimate travel time from each DHS cluster to the nearest hospital with a shortest-path algorithm. We quantified and compared the predicted probabilities of hospital-based childbirth resulting from one standard deviation (SD) change around the mean for different model predictors. Results: The mean travel time to the nearest hospital, in minutes, was 27 (Kenya), 31 (Malawi), 25 (Nigeria) and 62 (Tanzania). In Kenya, a change of 1SD in wealth led to a 33.2 percentage points change in the probability of hospital birth, whereas a 1SD change in travel time led to a change of 16.6 percentage points. The marginal effect of 1SD change in wealth was weaker than that of travel time in Malawi (13.1 vs. 34.0 percentage points) and Tanzania (20.4 vs. 33.7 percentage points). In Nigeria, the two were similar (22.3 vs. 24.8 percentage points) but their additive effect was twice stronger (44.6 percentage points) than the separate effects. Random effects from survey clusters also explained substantial variability in hospital-based childbirth in all countries, indicating other unobserved local factors at play. Conclusions: Both poverty and long travel time are important determinants of hospital birth, although they vary in the extent to which they influence whether women give birth in a hospital within and across countries. This suggests that different strategies are needed to effectively enable poor women and women living in remote areas to gain access to skilled and adequate care for childbirth

    Use of traditional and complementary medicine as self-care strategies in community health centers

    In China, Community Health Centers (CHCs) are major providers of primary care services, but their potential in empowering patients’ self-management capacity has not been assessed. This study aims to describe self-care practice patterns amongst CHC attendees in urban China. In this cross-sectional quantitative study, 3360 CHC patients from 6 cities within the Pearl Delta Region were sampled using multistage cluster sampling. Thirty-seven per cent had used with over-the-counter Chinese herbal medicines (OTC CHMs) in the past year and majority of respondents found OTC CHMs effective. OTC CHMs were more popular amongst those who needed to pay out of pocket for CHC services. Less than 10% used vitamins and minerals, and those with a lower socioeconomic background have a higher propensity to consume. Although doubts on their usefulness are expressed, their use by the vulnerable population may reflect barriers to access to conventional health care, cultural affinity, or a defense against negative consequences of illnesses. About 25% performed physical exercise, but the prevalence is lower amongst women and older people. Taiji seems to be an alternative for these populations with promising effectiveness, but overall only 6% of CHC attendees participated. These results suggest that CHCs should start initiatives in fostering appropriate use of OTC CHM, vitamins, and minerals. Engaging community pharmacists in guiding safe and effective use of OTC CHM amongst the uninsured is essential given their low accessibility to CHC services. Prescription of Taiji instead of physical exercises to women and older people could be more culturally appropriate, and the possibility of including this as part of the CHC services worth further exploration

    B-1a cells acquire their unique characteristics by bypassing the pre-BCR selection stage

    B-1a cells are long-lived, self-renewing innate-like B cells that predominantly inhabit the peritoneal and pleural cavities. In contrast to conventional B-2 cells, B-1a cells have a receptor repertoire that is biased towards bacterial and self-antigens, promoting a rapid response to infection and clearing of apoptotic cells. Although B-1a cells are known to primarily originate from fetal tissues, the mechanisms by which they arise has been a topic of debate for many years. Here we show that in the fetal liver versus bone marrow environment, reduced IL-7R/STAT5 levels promote immunoglobulin kappa gene recombination at the early pro-B cell stage. As a result, differentiating B cells can directly generate a mature B cell receptor (BCR) and bypass the requirement for a pre-BCR and pairing with surrogate light chain. This 'alternate pathway' of development enables the production of B cells with self-reactive, skewed specificity receptors that are peculiar to the B-1a compartment. Together our findings connect seemingly opposing lineage and selection models of B-1a cell development and explain how these cells acquire their unique properties

    Pigment epithelium-derived factor in the monkey retinal pigment epithelium and interphotoreceptor matrix: apical secretion and distribution

    Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is an extracellular protein derived from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a tissue formed by polarized cells that release growth and trophic factors in a directional fashion. We have investigated the distribution and directional release of PEDF protein by the monkey RPE. We established primary cultures of monkey RPE cells that expressed the PEDF gene, and that synthesized and secreted the PEDF protein. Northern analysis of RPE cultures and monkey ocular tissues showed that PEDF transcripts were highly expressed in RPE as compared with several other monkey ocular tissues, being even more abundant in cultured cells than they were in the native RPE. The differentiated RPE cells in culture secreted protein that shared the immunological, biochemical and biological characteristics of PEDF. The overall PEDF levels in the RPE conditioned media reached 6.5 mg ml- after 8 days in culture (i.e. 1.1 pg of PEDF per RPE cell). RPE cells were cultivated on permeable supports as monolayers forming a barrier between apical and basal compartments. Apical and basal culture media were sampled at three or four-day intervals for 18 cycles, and the PEDF content was quantified. Most of the PEDF protein was significantly higher in the apical than in the basal medium (>4 times) at the initial recovery intervals, to be detected only in the apical medium at the latter intervals. In the native monkey eye, the concentration of soluble PEDF in the interphotoreceptor matrix (144 nM) was 7-fold and 25-fold greater than in vitreous and aqueous, respectively. PEDF was abundant in the interphotoreceptor matrix surrounding rod and cone outer segments, and was detectable at lower levels in the RPE as visualized by confocal microscopy. We concluded that PEDF synthesized by the RPE is secreted preferentially from the apical surface and is distributed apically to the RPE bordering the outer segments of photoreceptors. PEDF can be a useful marker for RPE polarization and differentiation. The polarization of RPE may be an important mechanism to control PEDF secretion and our results offer interesting possibilities on regulation of PEDF

    Fully Dynamic Numerical Simulation of the Hammer Peening Fatigue Life Improvement Technique

    AbstractThis paper presents the results of the development process for a Finite Element Analysis of the Hammer Peening Fatigue Life Improvement Technique. The Fatigue Life of welded structures is still in need for improvement. The sheer number of Fatigue Live Improvement Techniques parameters leads to the need of simulating and predicting their results. For this study, two different materials were used, an Austenitic Stainless Steel and a Duplex Stainless Steel. Non-load carrying cruciform weld joints were produced and fatigue tested, with and without the Hammer Peening treatment. Finally a FEA code (ABAQUS®) was used to simulate the Hammer Peening technique. A fully dynamic model was used, combined with the Chaboche Kinematic-hardening material model and different Hammering parameter experimentally determined. Alongside the residual stresses introduced by the Hammer Peening Technique, the predicted Fatigue Life using the FEA model were compared with the experimental results, showing a very good agreement between them. Also the effect of several parameters, like the hammering impact load, the hammer positioning or the number of hammering passages, were analysed as a way to validate the FEA model. The most important result was of course the Fatigue Strength Gain factor, for the Hammer Peening Technique, that in both cases was found to be superior to 1.3

    Multipartite entangled states in coupled quantum dots and cavity-QED

    We investigate the generation of multipartite entangled state in a system of N quantum dots embedded in a microcavity and examine the emergence of genuine multipartite entanglement by three different characterizations of entanglement. At certain times of dynamical evolution one can generate multipartite entangled coherent exciton states or multiqubit WW states by initially preparing the cavity field in a superposition of coherent states or the Fock state with one photon, respectively. Finally we study environmental effects on multipartite entanglement generation and find that the decay rate for the entanglement is proportional to the number of excitons.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     We propose a scheme for generating multipartite entangled coherent states via entanglement swapping, with an example of a physical realization in ion traps. Bipartite entanglement of these multipartite states is quantified by the concurrence. We also use the NN--tangle to compute multipartite entanglement for certain systems.
