    Higher spin fields and the problem of cosmological constant

    The cosmological evolution of free massless vector or tensor (but not gauge) fields minimally coupled to gravity is analyzed. It is shown that there are some unstable solutions for these fields in De Sitter background. The back reaction of the energy-momentum tensor of such solutions to the original cosmological constant exactly cancels the latter and the expansion regime changes from the exponential to the power law one. In contrast to the adjustment mechanism realized by a scalar field the gravitational coupling constant in this model is time-independent and the resulting cosmology may resemble the realistic one.Comment: 15 pages, Latex twic

    Currently, Brazil sells around 300 million dollars per year of peach palms (Bactris gasipaes), wherein this country is responsible for being the largest worldwide producer, exporter and consumer. In crop year of 2014, productive components of peach palms were analyzed according to soil physical properties in Registro, SP, Brazil. The objectives were to evaluate the variability of the soil attributes and define a linear and spatial correlation between the crop productive components and the soil physical properties. Geostatistical grid was installed to collect data from soil and plant, with 54 sampling points in a total area of approximately 10,000 m2. With regard to linear point of view, stem diameter and palm height was explained by direct and exponential potential model, which was highly significant due to mechanical resistance to penetration.11316317

    Using Satellite Data To Improve Land Value Estimations In Bolivia

    Precise land valuation is necessary for an efficient allocation of resources at the private level, and territorial planning and provision of public good at the government level. This information can be obtained from real data transactions in limited areas where they occurred, leaving the rest of the land valuation depending on precise estimation models. These estimation models may use sold land characteristics to forecast the value of land with similar characteristics, by using existing data (i.e. returns on land, productivity, surface, soil maps, precipitation data, land use constraints by law, etc.). In many low and middle-income countries this data is scarce, limiting the possibility of developing these models. This information gap may be filled using satellite data. This study uses average biomass production estimations based on satellite data as a proxy for fertility. By using biomass production estimates for Bolivia over a period of 6 years, together with administrative land transaction data and geographical maps including precipitation, average temperature, slope, distance to closest road, to closed local and national markets, we are able to significantly improve previous land price models. This improvement allowed us to develop a land price index to inform farmers about current price trends and expected sale price for their own land

    Evidence for eosinophil recruitment, leukotriene B4 production and mast cell hyperplasia following Toxocara canis infection in rats

    It is well known that eosinophilia is a key pathogenetic component of toxocariasis. The objective of the present study was to determine if there is an association between peritoneal and blood eosinophil influx, mast cell hyperplasia and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) production after Toxocara canis infection. Oral inoculation of 56-day-old Wistar rats (N = 5-7 per group) with 1000 embryonated eggs containing third-stage (L3) T. canis larvae led to a robust accumulation of total leukocytes in blood beginning on day 3 and peaking on day 18, mainly characterized by eosinophils and accompanied by higher serum LTB4 levels. At that time, we also noted increased eosinophil numbers in the peritoneal cavity. In addition, we observed increased peritoneal mast cell number in the peritoneal cavity, which correlated with the time course of eosinophilia during toxocariasis. We also demonstrated that mast cell hyperplasia in the intestines and lungs began soon after the T. canis larvae migrated to these compartments, reaching maximal levels on day 24, which correlated with the complete elimination of the parasite. Therefore, mast cells appear to be involved in peritoneal and blood eosinophil infiltration through an LTB4-dependent mechanism following T. canis infection in rats. Our data also demonstrate a tight association between larval migratory stages and intestinal and pulmonary mast cell hyperplasia in the toxocariasis model

    Linearly coasting cosmology is comfortably concordant with a host of cosmological observations. It is surprisingly an excellent fit to SNe Ia observations and constraints arising from age of old quasars. In this article we highlight the overall viability of an open linear coasting cosmological model.The model is consistent with the latest SNe Ia ``gold'' sample and accommodates a very old high-redshift quasar, which the standard cold-dark model fails to do.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Collisional equilibrium, particle production and the inflationary universe

    Particle production processes in the expanding universe are described within a simple kinetic model. The equilibrium conditions for a Maxwell-Boltzmann gas with variable particle number are investigated. We find that radiation and nonrelativistic matter may be in equilibrium at the same temperature provided the matter particles are created at a rate that is half the expansion rate. Using the fact that the creation of particles is dynamically equivalent to a nonvanishing bulk pressure we calculate the backreaction of this process on the cosmological dynamics. It turns out that the `adiabatic' creation of massive particles with an equilibrium distribution for the latter necessarily implies power-law inflation. Exponential inflation in this context is shown to become inconsistent with the second law of thermodynamics after a time interval of the order of the Hubble time.Comment: 19 pages, latex, no figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.

    On exact solutions for quintessential (inflationary) cosmological models with exponential potentials

    We first study dark energy models with a minimally-coupled scalar field and exponential potentials, admitting exact solutions for the cosmological equations: actually, it turns out that for this class of potentials the Einstein field equations exhibit alternative Lagrangians, and are completely integrable and separable (i.e. it is possible to integrate the system analytically, at least by quadratures). We analyze such solutions, especially discussing when they are compatible with a late time quintessential expansion of the universe. As a further issue, we discuss how such quintessential scalar fields can be connected to the inflationary phase, building up, for this class of potentials, a quintessential inflationary scenario: actually, it turns out that the transition from inflation toward late-time exponential quintessential tail admits a kination period, which is an indispensable ingredient of this kind of theoretical models.
