Superfluid rotation sensor with helical laser trap
The macroscopic quantum states of the dilute bosonic ensemble in helical
laser trap at the temperatures about are considered in the
framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The helical interference pattern is
composed of the two counter propagating Laguerre-Gaussian optical vortices with
opposite orbital angular momenta and this pattern is driven in
rotation via angular Doppler effect. Macroscopic observables including linear
momentum and angular momentum of the atomic cloud are evaluated explicitly. It
is shown that rotation of reference frame is transformed into translational
motion of the twisted matter wave. The speed of translation equals the group
velocity of twisted wavetrain and alternates with a sign
of the frame angular velocity and helical pattern handedness .
We address detection of this effect using currently accessible laboratory

Codes of Fair Competition: The National Recovery Act, 1933-1935, and the Womenâs Dress Manufacturing Industry
Controversial issues prevalent in todayâs ready-to-wear apparel industry include the right of workers to join unions, the proliferation of sweatshops and sweatshop conditions, and design piracy. The idea of forming codes of conduct to establish criteria of ethical business practices is not new to the apparel industry. Indeed, the womenâs dress manufacturing industry discussed and debated codes of fair competition under the New Deal Policies of the National Recovery Act (NRA) of 1933 to 1935. Primary sources for this study included governmental hearings in the establishment of the NRA Dress Code, The New York Times, Womenâs Wear Daily, and the Journal of the Patent Office Society. The history of the NRA codes implemented in the U.S. womenâs ready-to-wear apparel industry provides an important case study highlighting the difficulties and complexities of creating and achieving industry-wide standard practices through self-regulation. The failure of the NRA demonstrates that even with the joint cooperation of industry, labor, and consumer groups and the backing of the force of law, codes of fair competition proved impossible to enforce
Continuous observations of the surface energy budget and meteorology over the Arctic sea ice during MOSAiC
The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) was a yearlong expedition supported by the icebreaker R/V Polarstern, following the Transpolar Drift from October 2019 to October 2020. The campaign documented an annual cycle of physical, biological, and chemical processes impacting the atmosphere-ice-ocean system. Of central importance were measurements of the thermodynamic and dynamic evolution of the sea ice. A multi-agency international team led by the University of Colorado/CIRES and NOAA-PSL observed meteorology and surface-atmosphere energy exchanges, including radiation; turbulent momentum flux; turbulent latent and sensible heat flux; and snow conductive flux. There were four stations on the ice, a 10âm micrometeorological tower paired with a 23/30âm mast and radiation station and three autonomous Atmospheric Surface Flux Stations. Collectively, the four stations acquired ~928 days of data. This manuscript documents the acquisition and post-processing of those measurements and provides a guide for researchers to access and use the data products
Trans-ancestry genome-wide association study identifies 12 genetic loci influencing blood pressure and implicates a role for DNA methylation
We carried out a trans-ancestry genome-wide association and replication study of blood pressure phenotypes among up to 320,251 individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We find genetic variants at 12 new loci to be associated with blood pressure (P = 3.9 × 10-11 to 5.0 × 10-21). The sentinel blood pressure SNPs are enriched for association with DNA methylation at multiple nearby CpG sites, suggesting that, at some of the loci identified, DNA methylation may lie on the regulatory pathway linking sequence variation to blood pressure. The sentinel SNPs at the 12 new loci point to genes involved in vascular smooth muscle (IGFBP3, KCNK3, PDE3A and PRDM6) and renal (ARHGAP24, OSR1, SLC22A7 and TBX2) function. The new and known genetic variants predict increased left ventricular mass, circulating levels of NT-proBNP, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (P = 0.04 to 8.6 × 10-6). Our results provide new evidence for the role of DNA methylation in blood pressure regulation

LOFT two-phase flow data integrity analysis
Data integrity methods have been developed and applied to Loss-Of-Fluid Test (LOFT) nuclear reactor safety experiments at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. The methods for imroving and qualifying the accuracy of transient measurements on complex thermal-hydraulic experiments are described. These methods involve use of all the information available on the transducers, including data taken during the LOFT experiment itself. Optimum use of these methods determine, in part, the instrumentation package provided on the experiment
