    Ionization states of heavy elements observed in the 1974 May 14-15 anomalous solar particle event

    The charge states of heavy ions accelerated in the (3)He-Fe rich solar particle event of 1974 May 14-15 are determined using data from the Interplanetary Monitoring Platform-8. In addition to Fe(+11,12) both 0(+5) and Fe(+16,17,18) are also present suggesting variations in coronal temperatures over a range from approximately 400,000 to 5,000,000 K. The presence of 0(+5) and Fe(+16-18) may be explained by a resonant plasma heating mechanism proposed to account for the enhancements of (3)He and Fe

    An Experimental Investigation of Helicopter Rotor Hub Fairing Drag Characteristics

    A study was done in the NASA 14- by 22-Foot Wind Tunnel at Langley Research Center on the parasite drag of different helicopter rotor hub fairings and pylons. Parametric studies of hub-fairing camber and diameter were conducted. The effect of hub fairing/pylon clearance on hub fairing/pylon mutual interference drag was examined in detail. Force and moment data are presented in tabular and graphical forms. The results indicate that hub fairings with a circular-arc upper surface and a flat lower surface yield maximum hub drag reduction; and clearance between the hub fairing and pylon induces high mutual-interference drag and diminishes the drag-reduction benefit obtained using a hub fairing with a flat lower surface. Test data show that symmetrical hub fairings with circular-arc surfaces generate 74 percent more interference drag than do cambered hub fairings with flat lower surfaces, at moderate negative angle of attack

    Robust nodal superconductivity induced by isovalent doping in Ba(Fe1x_{1-x}Rux_x)2_2As2_2 and BaFe2_2(As1x_{1-x}Px_x)2_2

    We present the ultra-low-temperature heat transport study of iron-based superconductors Ba(Fe1x_{1-x}Rux_x)2_2As2_2 and BaFe2_2(As1x_{1-x}Px_x)2_2. For optimally doped Ba(Fe0.64_{0.64}Ru0.36_{0.36})2_2As2_2, a large residual linear term κ0/T\kappa_0/T at zero field and a H\sqrt{H} dependence of κ0(H)/T\kappa_0(H)/T are observed, which provide strong evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. This result demonstrates that the isovalent Ru doping can also induce nodal superconductivity, as P does in BaFe2_2(As0.67_{0.67}P0.33_{0.33})2_2. Furthermore, in underdoped Ba(Fe0.77_{0.77}Ru0.23_{0.23})2_2As2_2 and heavily underdoped BaFe2_2(As0.82_{0.82}P0.18_{0.18})2_2, κ0/T\kappa_0/T manifests similar nodal behavior, which shows the robustness of nodal superconductivity in the underdoped regime and puts constraint on theoretical models.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures - with two underdoped samples added, this paper supersedes arXiv:1106.541

    Temperature and Polarization Patterns in Anisotropic Cosmologies

    We study the coherent temperature and polarization patterns produced in homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models. We show results for all Bianchi types with a Friedman-Robertson-Walker limit (i.e. Types I, V, VII0_{0}, VIIh_{h} and IX) to illustrate the range of possible behaviour. We discuss the role of spatial curvature, shear and rotation in the geodesic equations for each model and establish some basic results concerning the symmetries of the patterns produced. We also give examples of the time-evolution of these patterns in terms of the Stokes parameters II, QQ and UU.Comment: 24 pages, 7 Figures, submitted to JCAP.     Renminbi Internationalisation: Precedents and Implications

    While it is commonly assumed that there are no known precedents against which to benchmark the internationalisation of the Renminbi (RMB), this paper argues that the PRCs own development experience provides a useful perspective on the internationalisation debate. In particular it indicates that lessons can be learnt from both the successes and the shortcomings of efforts to internationalise the RMB in the 1970s. During this period state-owned banks in Hong Kong played a central role in mobilising finance for foreign trade. Access to Hong Kong’s developed financial institutions allowed the PRC to maximise receipts from foreign trade as well as minimise the risks of undue swings in capital flows. The paper shows that although China no longer faces foreign exchange scarcity, economic reforms have not yet resolved vulnerabilities in China’s financial institutions and as such Hong Kong’s role in mitigating the risk of undue capital swings remains

    A Spectral Line Survey from 138.3 to 150.7 GHZ toward Orion-KL

    We present the results of a spectral line survey from 138.3 to 150.7 GHz toward Orion-KL. The observations were made using the 14 m radio telescope of Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. Typical system temperatures were between 500 and 700 K, with the sensitivity between 0.020.060.02 - 0.06 K in units of TA\rm T_A^*. A total of 149 line spectra are detected in this survey. Fifty lines have been previously reported, however we find 99 new detections. Among these new lines, 32 are `unidentified', while 67 are from molecular transitions with known identifications. There is no detection of H or He recombination lines. The identified spectra are from a total of 16 molecular species and their isotopic variants. In the range from 138.3 to 150.7 GHz, the strongest spectral line is the J=3-2 transition of CS molecule, followed by transitions of the H2CO\rm H_2CO, CH3OH\rm CH_3OH, CH3CN\rm CH_3CN, and SO2\rm SO_2. Spectral lines from the large organic molecules such as CH3OH\rm CH_3OH, CH3OCH3\rm CH_3OCH_3, HCOOCH3\rm HCOOCH_3, C2H5CN\rm C_2H_5CN and CH3CN\rm CH_3CN are prominent; with 80 % of the identified lines arising from transitions of these molecules. The rotational temperatures and column densities are derived using the standard rotation diagram analysis for CH3OH\rm CH_3OH (13CH3OH\rm ^{13}CH_3OH), HCOOCH3\rm HCOOCH_3, CH3CN\rm CH_3CN and SO2\rm SO_2 with 10270K\rm 10\sim 270 K and 0.220×1015cm2\rm 0.2\sim 20\times 10^{15} cm^{-2}.     Microstructure and superconducting properties of hot isostatically pressed MgB2

    Bulk samples of MgB2 have been formed by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) of commercial powder at 100MPa and 950=B0C. The resulting material is 100% dense with a sharp superconducting transition at 37.5K. Microstructural studies have indicated the presence of small amounts of second phases within the material, namely MgO and B rich compositions, probably MgB4. Magnetisation measurements performed at 20K have revealed values of Jc=1.3 x 106A/cm2 at zero field, and 9.3 x 105A/cm2 at 1T. Magneto optical (MO) studies have shown direct evidence for the superconducting homogeneity and strong intergranular current flow in the material.Comment: 3 pages, 6 figures, text updated, new references included and discussed.
