Measurements and Simulation Studies of Piezoceramics for Acoustic Particle Detection
Calibration sources are an indispensable tool for all detectors. In acoustic
particle detection the goal of a calibration source is to mimic neutrino
signatures as expected from hadronic cascades. A simple and promising method
for the emulation of neutrino signals are piezo ceramics. We will present

Generalized Second Law and phantom Cosmology: accreting black holes
The accretion of phantom fields by black holes within a thermodynamic context
is addressed. For a fluid violating the dominant energy condition, case of a
phantom fluid, the Euler and Gibbs relations permit two different possibilities
for the entropy and temperature: a situation in which the entropy is negative
and the temperature is positive or vice-versa. In the former case, if the
generalized second law (GSL) is valid, then the accretion process is not
allowed whereas in the latter, there is a critical black hole mass below which
the accretion process occurs. In a universe dominated by a phantom field, the
critical mass drops quite rapidly with the cosmic expansion and black holes are
only slightly affected by accretion. All black holes disappear near the big
rip, as suggested by previous investigations, if the GSL is violated.Comment: 8 pp., no figure

In applying a strategy, structure, ownership and performance (SSOP) framework to three major clearing banks (ABN AMRO, UBS, Barclays), this article debates whether the conclusions generated by Whittington and Mayer about European manufacturing industry can be applied to the financial services sector. While European integration plays a key role in determining strategy, it is clear that global factors were far more important in determining management actions, leading to significant differences in structural adaptation. The article also debates whether this has led to improved performance, given the problems experienced with both geographical dispersion and diversification, bringing into question the quality of decision-making over the long term
Ultrasonic attenuation in magnetic fields for superconducting states with line nodes in Sr2RuO4
We calculate the ultrasonic attenuation in magnetic fields for
superconducting states with line nodes vertical or horizontal relative to the
RuO_2 planes. This theory, which is valid for fields near Hc2 and not too low
temperatures, takes into account the effects of supercurrent flow and Andreev
scattering by the Abrikosov vortex lattice. For rotating in-plane field
H(theta) the attenuation alpha(theta)exhibits variations of fourfold symmetry
in the rotation angle theta. In the case of vertical nodes, the transverse T100
sound mode yields the weakest(linear)H and T dependence of alpha, while the
longitudinal L100 mode yields a stronger (quadratic) H and T dependence. This
is in strong contrast to the case of horizontal line nodes where alpha is the
same for the T100 and L100 modes (apart from a shift of pi/4 in field
direction) and is roughly a quadratic function of H and T. Thus we conclude
that measurements of alpha in in-plane magnetic fields for different in-plane
sound modes may be an important tool for probing the nodal structure of the gap
