Justification by Works: Fate and the Gospel in the Roman Empire

    Get PDF
A prominent theme in the Christian writings of the second and third centuries is that men are rewarded and punished according to the quality of their works. It is sounded in the middle of the second century by Justin Martyr in his First Apology: We have learned from the prophets and declare as the truth, that penalties and punishments and good rewards are given according to the quality of each man\u27s action. A century later, Origen, in Contra Celsum, lists this belief as an article of faith alongside the resurrection and virgin birth

Father Anselm Weber, O. F. M., Missionary to the Navajo, 1898-1921

To Father Anselm Weber, 1862 - 1921, belongs most of the credit for establishing this Catholic mission at St. Michaels in Apache County, Arizona. In point of time he belonged to the first quarter of the twentieth century. As a missionary he has a rightful place in that long line of Catholic missionaries that ties together the centuries back to apostolic times. Anselm Weber maintained a huge correspondence with his Franciscan confreres, with the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, with government agencies, and with a host of friends and relative. These letters and papers, preserved in five principal collections, have furnished the base for research. Fortunately for the historian the missionary saved practically every letter he received, and made copies of all business letters he wrote, even before he used a typewriter in 1903. Moreover, he wrote regularly and on a great variety of subjects in mission and church magazines

Tertullian and the Early Christian View of Tradition

The term tradition enters the Christian vocabulary in apostolic times. From earliest days it has ranked in importance with such words as grace, hope, love, justification, redemption, salvation, Scripture. Already in the writings of Paul it occurs at key points and reveals a great deal about how Paul conceived of the Christian faith, its origin and transmission

An Analysis of Foreign Military Sales Follow-On Logistics Support and Industry\u27s Future Role

    Get PDF
This research describes how Foreign Military Sales follow-on support will be provided for in the future based on changes currently taking place in the Department of Defense, Air Force, and industry today. Information on the current system was gathered through a thorough review of the literature. Interviews were used extensively To determine the future plans of industry. In the Department of Defense, outsourcing and privatization, most notably depot privatization will affect the way that follow-on support is provided in the future. Due in large part to shrinking arms sales, private industry is increasing the emphasis placed on providing follow-on support through commercial contracts as a means of generating income and keeping production lines viable. Third- party companies have emerged as an important entity in the follow-on support field, providing specialized support to the Air Force, private industry, and foreign customers. The Air Force and private industry each have their own advantages and disadvantages in providing follow-on support. The findings conclude that follow-on support will be increasingly provided through Air Force outsourcing and privatized programs, and that private industry is seeking to increase its participation in the follow-on support arena

Nonsequential Double Recombination in Intense Laser Fields

A second plateau in the harmonic spectra of laser-driven two-electron atoms is observed both in the numerical solution of a low-dimensional model helium atom and using an extended strong field approximation. It is shown that the harmonics well beyond the usual cut-off are due to the simultaneous recombination of the two electrons, which were emitted during different, previous half-cycles. The new cut-off is explained in terms of classical trajectories. Classical predictions and the time-frequency analysis of the ab initio quantum results are in excellent agreement. The mechanism corresponds to the inverse single photon double ionization process in the presence of a (low frequency) laser field.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, v2 with an extended strong field approximation treatment of the process; instead, v1 describes an attosecond control scheme to enhance the proces

Laser frequency combs for astronomical observations

A direct measurement of the universe's expansion history could be made by observing in real time the evolution of the cosmological redshift of distant objects. However, this would require measurements of Doppler velocity drifts of about 1 centimeter per second per year, and astronomical spectrographs have not yet been calibrated to this tolerance. We demonstrate the first use of a laser frequency comb for wavelength calibration of an astronomical telescope. Even with a simple analysis, absolute calibration is achieved with an equivalent Doppler precision of approximately 9 meters per second at about 1.5 micrometers - beyond state-of-the-art accuracy. We show that tracking complex, time-varying systematic effects in the spectrograph and detector system is a particular advantage of laser frequency comb calibration. This technique promises an effective means for modeling and removal of such systematic effects to the accuracy required by future experiments to see direct evidence of the universe's putative acceleration.Comment: Science, 5th September 2008. 18 pages, 7 figures (7 JPG files), including Supporting Online Material.
