Detection and Characterization of Defects by the Electric Current Perturbation Method

    Get PDF
The electric current perturbation (ECPl method of nondestructive evaluation is a powerful technique for detection and characterization of very small defects in nonferromagnetic material. It consists of establishing a current flow in the material to be inspected and then measuring current perturbations caused by nonconducting defects such as fatigue cracks. The current perturbation is sensed by a non-contacting magnetometer probe which detects the associated magnetic field perturbation. Recent findings from ECP investigations are reviewed in this paper. First, analytical modeling and experimental results show that single and multiple, closely spaced slots can be characterized from their unique ECP signatures; second, ECP inspection results from tiebolt holes in TF-33 gas turbine ·engine disks demonstrate the capability to characterize very small (0.305 mm long by 0.137 mm deep), tightly-closed, service-induced fatigue cracks; and third, preliminary results of an ECP experiment on a two layer fastener configuration show that radial slots in fastener holes can be detected in the second layer with the fastener installed

The Ithaca Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

    Get PDF
I list several strong requirements for what I would consider a sensible interpretation of quantum mechanics and I discuss two simple theorems. One, as far as I know, is new; the other was only noted a few years ago. Both have important implications for such a sensible interpretation. My talk will not clear everything up; indeed, you may conclude that it has not cleared anything up. But I hope it will provide a different perspective from which to view some old and vexing puzzles (or, if you believe nothing needs to be cleared up, some ancient verities.)Comment: 21 pages, plain TEX. Renormalization: the observable-state model

    Get PDF
The usual mathematical formalism of quantum field theory is non-rigorous because it contains divergences that can only be renormalized by non-rigorous mathematical methods. The purpose of this paper is to present a method of subtraction of this divergences using the formalism of decoherence. This is achieved by replacing the standard renormalization method by a projector on a well defined Hilbert subspace. In this way a list of problems of the standard formalism disappears while the physical results of QFT remains valid. From it own nature, this formalism can be used in non-renormalizable theories.Comment: 23 page

Memory with memory in genetic programming

    Get PDF
We introduce Memory with Memory Genetic Programming (MwM-GP), where we use soft assignments and soft return operations. Instead of having the new value completely overwrite the old value of registers or memory, soft assignments combine such values. Similarly, in soft return operations the value of a function node is a blend between the result of a calculation and previously returned results. In extensive empirical tests, MwM-GP almost always does as well as traditional GP, while significantly outperforming it in several cases. MwM-GP also tends to be far more consistent than traditional GP. The data suggest that MwM-GP works by successively refining an approximate solution to the target problem and that it is much less likely to have truly ineffective code. MwM-GP can continue to improve over time, but it is less likely to get the sort of exact solution that one might find with traditional GP

    A Calculus of Bounded Capacities

    No full text
Resource control has attracted increasing interest in foundational research on distributed systems. This paper focuses on space control and develops an analysis of space usage in the context of an ambient-like calculus with bounded capacities and weighed processes, where migration and activation require space. A type system complements the dynamics of the calculus by providing static guarantees that the intended capacity bounds are preserved throughout the computation

Reduction and Emergence in Bose-Einstein Condensates

A closer look at some proposed Gedanken-experiments on BECs promises to shed light on several aspects of reduction and emergence in physics. These include the relations between classical descriptions and different quantum treatments of macroscopic systems, and the emergence of new properties and even new objects as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking

Exploring variations in childhood stunting in Nigeria using league table, control chart and spatial analysis

    Get PDF
Background: Stunting, linear growth retardation is the best measure of child health inequalities as it captures multiple dimensions of children’s health, development and environment where they live. The developmental priorities and socially acceptable health norms and practices in various regions and states within Nigeria remains disaggregated and with this, comes the challenge of being able to ascertain which of the regions and states identifies with either high or low childhood stunting to further investigate the risk factors and make recommendations for action oriented policy decisions. Methods: We used data from the birth histories included in the 2008 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) to estimate childhood stunting. Stunting was defined as height for age below minus two standard deviations from the median height for age of the standard World Health Organization reference population. We plotted control charts of the proportion of childhood stunting for the 37 states (including federal capital, Abuja) in Nigeria. The Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) were used as a measure of the overall clustering and is assessed by a test of a null hypothesis. Results: Childhood stunting is high in Nigeria with an average of about 39%. The percentage of children with stunting ranged from 11.5% in Anambra state to as high as 60% in Kebbi State. Ranking of states with respect to childhood stunting is as follows: Anambra and Lagos states had the least numbers with 11.5% and 16.8% respectively while Yobe, Zamfara, Katsina, Plateau and Kebbi had the highest (with more than 50% of their underfives having stunted growth). Conclusions: Childhood stunting is high in Nigeria and varied significantly across the states. The northern states have a higher proportion than the southern states. There is an urgent need for studies to explore factors that may be responsible for these special cause variations in childhood stunting in Nigeria

    Weyl’s gauge argument

    Get PDF
The standard U(1) “gauge principle” or “gauge argument” produces an exact potential A=dλ and a vanishing field F=ddλ=0. Weyl has his own gauge argument, which is sketchy, archaic and hard to follow; but at least it produces an inexact potential A and a nonvanishing field F=dA≠0. I attempt a reconstruction

On the nature of continuous physical quantities in classical and quantum mechanics

    Get PDF
Within the traditional Hilbert space formalism of quantum mechanics, it is not possible to describe a particle as possessing, simultaneously, a sharp position value and a sharp momentum value. Is it possible, though, to describe a particle as possessing just a sharp position value (or just a sharp momentum value)? Some, such as Teller (Journal of Philosophy, 1979), have thought that the answer to this question is No -- that the status of individual continuous quantities is very different in quantum mechanics than in classical mechanics. On the contrary, I shall show that the same subtle issues arise with respect to continuous quantities in classical and quantum mechanics; and that it is, after all, possible to describe a particle as possessing a sharp position value without altering the standard formalism of quantum mechanics.Comment: 26 pages, LaTe
