Normal and lateral Casimir force: Advances and prospects
We discuss recent experimental and theoretical results on the Casimir force
between real material bodies made of different materials. Special attention is
paid to calculations of the normal Casimir force acting perpendicular to the
surface with the help of the Lifshitz theory taking into account the role of
free charge carriers. Theoretical results for the thermal Casimir force acting
between metallic, dielectric and semiconductor materials are presented and
compared with available experimental data. Main attention is concentrated on
the possibility to control the magnitude and sign of the Casimir force for
applications in nanotechnology. In this respect we consider experiments on the
optical modulation of the Casimir force between metal and semiconductor test
bodies with laser light. Another option is the use of ferromagnetic materials,
specifically, ferromagnetic dielectrics. Under some conditions this allows to
get Casimir repulsion. The lateral Casimir force acting between sinusoidally
corrugated surfaces can be considered as some kind of noncontact friction
caused by zero-point oscillations of the electromagnetic field. Recent
experiments and computations using the exact theory have demonstrated the role
of diffraction-type effects in this phenomenon and the possibility to get
asymmetric force profiles. Conclusion is made that the Casimir force may play

Excitatory amino acid binding sites in the basal ganglia of the rat: A quantitative autoradiographic study
Quantitative receptor autoradiography was used to determine the distribution of excitatory amino acid binding sites in the basal ganglia of rat brain. [alpha]-Amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid, , kainate, quisqualate-sensitive metabotropic and , non-kainate, non-quisqualate glutamate binding sites had their highest density in striatum, nucleus accumbens, and olfactory tubercle. Kainate binding was higher in the lateral striatum but there was no medial-lateral striatal gradient for other binding sites. and [alpha]-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid binding sites were most dense in the nucleus accumbens and olfactory tubercle. There was no dorsal-ventral gradient within the striatal complex for the other binding sites. Other regions of the basal ganglia had lower densities of ligand binding. To compare binding site density within non-striatal regions, binding for each ligand was normalized to the striatal binding density. When compared to the striatal complex, [alpha]-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid and metabotropic binding sites had higher relative density in the globus pallidus, ventral pallidum, and subthalamic nucleus than other binding sites. Metabotropic binding also had a high relative density in the substantia nigra. , non-kainate, non-quisqualate glutamate binding sites had a high relative density in globus pallidus, ventral pallidum, and substantia nigra. binding sites had a low relative density in pallidum, subthalamic nucleus, substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area.Our data indicate heterogeneous distribution of excitatory amino acid binding sites within rat basal ganglia and suggest that the character of excitatory amino acid-mediated neurotransmission within the basal ganglia is also heterogeneous.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/30265/1/0000666.pd

Dehydrin-Like Proteins in Soybean Seeds in Response to Drought Stress during Seed Filling
There is no information on accumulation of dehydrin proteins during seed development and maturation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in response to drought stress. Our objective was to study accumulation of dehydrin-like proteins in developing soybean seeds in response to drought stress. A greenhouse experiment and a field experiment were conducted. In the greenhouse experiment, three treatments were imposed on soybean plants after beginning of linear seed filling (R5): well-watered (WW), gradual stress (GS) imposed before severe stress, and sudden severe stress (SS). In the field treatments were irrigation (I) and nonirrigation (NI) (rainfed) conditions imposed from R5 to R8 (mature seeds). Greenhouse results indicated dehydrin-like proteins (28 and 32 kDa) were detected 18 d after R5 (R5.8) in developing seeds from drought-stressed plants but not in seeds from the well-watered plants. In the mature seeds, dehydrin-like proteins (28, 32, and 34 kDa) were detected in seeds from drought-stressed plants as well as the well-watered plants. In the field, dehydrin-like proteins accumulated similarly under irrigation and nonirrigation conditions, with the first detection for dehydrins (28 and 32 kDa) at 22 d after R5 (R6). Accumulation of dehydrin-like proteins was maximal in seeds harvested at 43 d after R5 (seed physiological maturity)

Genetic diversity at the Dhn3 locus in Turkish Hordeum spontaneum populations with comparative structural analyses
We analysed Hordeum spontaneum accessions from 21 different locations to understand the genetic diversity of HsDhn3 alleles and effects of single base mutations on the intrinsically disordered structure of the resulting polypeptide (HsDHN3). HsDHN3 was found to be YSK2-type with a low-frequency 6-aa deletion in the beginning of Exon 1. There is relatively high diversity in the intron region of HsDhn3 compared to the two exon regions. We have found subtle differences in K segments led to changes in amino acids chemical properties. Predictions for protein interaction profiles suggest the presence of a protein-binding site in HsDHN3 that coincides with the K1 segment. Comparison of DHN3 to closely related cereals showed that all of them contain a nuclear localization signal sequence flanking to the K1 segment and a novel conserved region located between the S and K1 segments [E(D/T)DGMGGR]. We found that H. vulgare, H. spontaneum, and Triticum urartu DHN3s have a greater number of phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C than other cereal species, which may be related to stress adaptation. Our results show that the nature and extent of mutations in the conserved segments of K1 and K2 are likely to be key factors in protection of cells
Isolation and functional characterization of a Medicago sativa L. gene, MsLEA3-1
A full-length cDNA of 1,728 nt, called MsLEA3-1, was cloned from alfalfa by rapid amplification of cDNA ends from an expressed sequence tag homologous to soybean pGmPM10 (accession No. AAA91965.1). MsLEA3-1, encodes a deduced protein of 436 amino acids, a calculated molecular weight of 47.0 kDa, a theoretical isoelectric point of 5.18, and closest homology with late embryogenesis abundant proteins in soybean. Sequence homology suggested a signal peptide in the N terminus, and subcellular localization with GFP revealed that MsLEA3-1 was localized preferentially to the nucleolus. The transcript titre of MsLEA3-1 was strongly enriched in leaves compared with roots and stems of mature alfalfa plants. Gene expression of MsLEA3-1 was strongly induced when seedlings were treated with NaCl and ABA. Expression of the MsLEA3-1 transgenic was detected in transgenic tobacco. Malondialdehyde content and, electrical conductivity content were reduced and electrical conductivity and proline content were increased in transgenic tobacco compared with non-transgenic tobacco under salt stress. The results showed that accumulation of the MsLEA3-1 protein in the vegetative tissues of transgenic plants enhanced their tolerance to salt stress. These results demonstrate a role for the MsLEA3-1 protein in stress protection and suggest the potential of the MsLEA3-1 gene for genetic engineering of salt tolerance
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of coenzyme Q10 in Huntington disease
Objective: To test the hypothesis that chronic treatment of early-stage Huntington disease (HD) with high-dose coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) will slow the progressive functional decline of HD.
Methods: We performed a multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Patients with early-stage HD (n = 609) were enrolled at 48 sites in the United States, Canada, and Australia from 2008 to 2012. Patients were randomized to receive either CoQ 2,400 mg/d or matching placebo, then followed for 60 months. The primary outcome variable was the change from baseline to month 60 in Total Functional Capacity score (for patients who survived) combined with time to death (for patients who died) analyzed using a joint-rank analysis approach.
Results: An interim analysis for futility revealed a conditional power of <5% for the primary analysis, prompting premature conclusion in July 2014. No statistically significant differences were seen between treatment groups for the primary or secondary outcome measures. CoQ was generally safe and well-tolerated throughout the study.
Conclusions: These data do not justify use of CoQ as a treatment to slow functional decline in HD
