Background: Recurrent and prolonged courses of antibiotics exposure have resulted in an increase in the prevalence of hospital acquired infections and antibiotic resistant profile. The objective of this study was to quantify the use of antibiotics in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Govt. Medical College and Hospital, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, a tertiary health care centre. Methods: A total of 260 neonates admitted in NICU from August 2017 to February 2018 were enrolled in the study and fulfilling inclusion criteria of the study. Demographic details, data on antibiotic prescriptions (name, dose, frequency, route of administration) was recorded on pre-tested structured Performa. Results: A total of 248 neonates received the antibiotics. EOS pneumonia was most common i.e. 29.8% followed by LOS pneumonia (20.6%). Sepsis, pneumonia Meningitis, NEC, were common indications for admission in NICU. Among the antibiotic combinations amoxicillin + clavulanate (38.99%), was most commonly prescribed followed by gentamicin (37.89%) and piperacillin (11.01%) respectively. Other antibiotics like, linezolide (0.94%), fluconazole (5.97%), meropenem (4.42%), vancomycine (0.77%) were also used less commonly in NICU. About fifty of the medicine prescribed were in compliance with the national list of essential medicines 2011.Conclusions: In tertiary care setup of NICU amoxicillin + clavulanate and gentamicin are most commonly used antibiotics in NICU. The study concludes that the antibiotic prescription pattern at NICU of our tertiary care hospital was found rational

Almost Contact Lagrangian Submanifolds of Nearly Kaehler 6-Sphere

For a Lagrangian submanifold M of S 6 with nearly Kaehler structure, we provide conditions for a canonically induced almost contact metric structure on M by a unit vector field, to be Sasakian. Assuming M contact metric, we show that it is Sasakian if and only if the second fundamental form annihilates the Reeb vector field ξ, furthermore, if the Sasakian submanifold M is parallel along ξ, then it is the totally geodesic 3-sphere. We conclude with a condition that reduces the normal canonical almost contact metric structure on M to Sasakian or cosymplectic structure

Samples of bivalve species viz. Lamillidens marginalis L. corrianus and Indonaia caeruleus were collected from the Jayekwadi dam. Three species of obligate commensalistic ciliates, Conchophthirus acuminatus, C. curtus and C. nikamentus n.sp. belonging to genus Conchophthirus were observed on the gills and mantle cavity of bivalve. Prevalence of the ciliate infection were reported for all three species of bivalves and Conchophthirus.  Correlation of infection intentisity with the length of shell in three species of bivalves were studied

Star formation in galaxies at z~4-5 from the SMUVS survey: a clear starburst/main-sequence bimodality for Halpha emitters on the SFR-M* plane

We study a large galaxy sample from the Spitzer Matching Survey of the UltraVISTA ultra-deep Stripes (SMUVS) to search for sources with enhanced 3.6 micron fluxes indicative of strong Halpha emission at z=3.9-4.9. We find that the percentage of "Halpha excess" sources reaches 37-40% for galaxies with stellar masses log10(M*/Msun) ~ 9-10, and decreases to <20% at log10(M*/Msun) ~ 10.7. At higher stellar masses, however, the trend reverses, although this is likely due to AGN contamination. We derive star formation rates (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR) from the inferred Halpha equivalent widths (EW) of our "Halpha excess" galaxies. We show, for the first time, that the "Halpha excess" galaxies clearly have a bimodal distribution on the SFR-M* plane: they lie on the main sequence of star formation (with log10(sSFR/yr^{-1})<-8.05) or in a starburst cloud (with log10(sSFR/yr^{-1}) >-7.60). The latter contains ~15% of all the objects in our sample and accounts for >50% of the cosmic SFR density at z=3.9-4.9, for which we derive a robust lower limit of 0.066 Msun yr^{-1} Mpc^{-3}. Finally, we identify an unusual >50sigma overdensity of z=3.9-4.9 galaxies within a 0.20 x 0.20 sq. arcmin region. We conclude that the SMUVS unique combination of area and depth at mid-IR wavelengths provides an unprecedented level of statistics and dynamic range which are fundamental to reveal new aspects of galaxy evolution in the young Universe.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. Re-submitted to the ApJ, after addressing referee report. Main changes with respect to v1: a new section and a new appendix have been added to investigate further the origin and robustness of the sSFR bimodality. No conclusion change

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an endocrine disorder characterized by abnormal carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism along with specific long-term complications which are associated with hyperlipidemia and oxidative stress. Hence, it is important to find hypoglycemic drug that improves lipid profile and reduces oxidative stress in diabetic patient. This study, therefore, was performed to investigate hypolipidemic and antioxidant potential of Pioglitazone (PIO) in hyperlipidemic rats. Methods: Hyperlipidemia was induced in normal rats by including 0.75 gm% cholesterol and 1.5 gm% bile salt in normal diet and these rats were used for the experiments. PIO hydrochloride was administered as 10 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg dose levels to the hyperlipidemic rats. Hypolipidemic activity was estimated by plasma lipid profile parameters while antioxidant potential was estimated by ascorbic acid, catalase activity, malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase activity using standard methods. Statistical analysis was done by one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Dunnett’s test. Results:  Treatment with 10 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg dose levels of PIO hydrochloride resulted in a significant decrease in serum TG and VLDL only in 30 mg/kg PIO treated group and significant increase in serum HDL in both groups, but no significant decrease in cholesterol and LDL in both PIO treated groups. PIO increased activities of catalase enzyme and concentration of malondialdehyde significantly in only 30 mg/kg PIO treated group. But there were no significant changes in the superoxide dismutase activity and ascorbic acid concentration in both PIO treated groups. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that treatment with 10 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg dose levels of PIO hydrochloride improves the plasma lipid profile and also reduces oxidative stress in hyperlipidemic animals

Magnetotransport properties of individual InAs nanowires

We probe the magnetotransport properties of individual InAs nanowires in a field effect transistor geometry. In the low magnetic field regime we observe magnetoresistance that is well described by the weak localization (WL) description in diffusive conductors. The weak localization correction is modified to weak anti-localization (WAL) as the gate voltage is increased. We show that the gate voltage can be used to tune the phase coherence length (lϕl_\phi) and spin-orbit length (lsol_{so}) by a factor of ∼\sim 2. In the high field and low temperature regime we observe the mobility of devices can be modified significantly as a function of magnetic field. We argue that the role of skipping orbits and the nature of surface scattering is essential in understanding high field magnetotransport in nanowires

Background: The burden of metabolism and exposure to dangerous chemicals make liver vulnerable to variety of disorders like acute or chronic inflammation, toxin/ drug related hepatitis or cirrhosis. Tuberculosis is a common problem in India and worldwide. Drug induced liver injury (DILI) is a problem of increasing significance, but has been a long standing concern in treatment of tuberculous (TB) infection. Several studies have revealed that, tylophora asthmatica (Burnf.) Merill. (Family: asclepidaceae) commonly known as antmul possess hepatoprotective property. There is less scientific work regarding the effect of Tylophora asthmatica on hepatotoxicity induced by antitubercular drugs, hence the present study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the effect of tylophora asthmatica on antitubercular drug induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats. Methods: Total 24 Albino rats weighing about 150-200 grams were divided in four groups, 6 animals in each group. In the study, antitubercular drugs: INH (50 mg/kg) and rifampicin (50 mg/kg), test drug: aqueous extract of tylophora asthmatica doses (200 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) were used. Drugs were given by oral route for 14 days. Biochemical tests for Sr. ALT, AST, bilirubin (total and direct) and histopathological examination of liver was done. Results: Tylophora asthmatica treated group had no significant rise in values of Sr.ALT, AST, bilirubin (total and direct) and also there were no significant histopathological changes in this group, indicating hepatoprotective effect of tylophora asthmatica. Conclusions: It was concluded that tylophora asthmatica has hepatoprotective activity in antitubercular drug induced hepatotoxicity

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is an important cause for morbidity in elderly people. Therapy is largely symptomatic with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which pose risk in the elderly. Methionine is natural body constituent with novel property of blunting S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) inflammatory process and cartilage degradation. The aim of this study was to compare effectiveness of SAMe, with standard etoricoxib therapy in newly diagnosed knee osteoarthritis cases. Methods: 127 newly diagnosed knee osteoarthritis patients were randomized into two groups. 55 participants received treatment  of etoricoxib 600 mg extended release once daily for 90 days (group 1) and 72 received  etoricoxib 600 mg extended release once daily and SAMe 400 mg twice daily  for initial 15 days followed by SAMe once daily 400 mg as maintenance dose for next 75 days  (group 2). The outcomes were measured by knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS). Pre and post treatment KOOS scores of all cases were separately pooled to define the median for whole as well as components of KOOS parameters. Relative frequencies of cases with values around respective medians were compared by MOODS median test. Patient characteristics, disease characteristics were also examined for bearing on outcomes besides the treatment. Results: SAMe treatment was associated with significantly greater improvement in symptoms, activities of daily life, spontaneous recreational activities and the quality of life compared to etoricoxib therapy. The therapy was well-tolerated.Conclusions: The study confirms SAMe as superior therapeutic option in osteoarthritis. SAMe indeed has been reported to have specific anti-arthritic effects and promotive to general well-being
