Pricing Bodies: A Feminist New Materialist Approach to the Relations Between the Economic and Socio-Cultural
Arguments that the economic and socio-cultural should be understood as relational and intertwined, and that price involves a reciprocal relationship between the economic and socio-cultural, are increasingly prevalent in the social sciences. I develop these notions of relationality and reciprocation through a feminist new materialist perspective, which emphasises the entanglement of and intra-action between what might usually be seen as independent and autonomous entities. To do this, I focus on a range of recent body-image initiatives, led by government, corporate and non-profit organisations, which aim to improve girls’ and young women’s levels of confidence and self-esteem. I explore how feminist theory tends to see such initiatives in terms of the expansion of the economic sphere into the socio-cultural, which involves a tainting or contamination of embodiment and feeling. Rather than dispute these arguments, I take seriously theories and practices from cultural economy that see the economic and socio-cultural as co-constitutive. I augment these ideas with a feminist new materialist approach and argue that the economic and socio-cultural are in intra-active relations: they do not precede or exist apart from each other. In doing so, I consider how body-image initiatives can be understood as phenomena produced through these entangled intra-active relations, and offer an understanding of pricing as a simultaneously socio-cultural and economic process, where value and values become. I also raise questions regarding how, ethically and politically, boundary making and unmaking can be conceived, and how despite being in entangled relations, asymmetries between economic and socio-cultural relations may be approached
Heat transfer between nanoparticles: Thermal conductance for near-field interactions
We analyze the heat transfer between two nanoparticles separated by a
distance lying in the near-field domain in which energy interchange is due to
Coulomb interactions. The thermal conductance is computed by assuming that the
particles have charge distributions characterized by fluctuating multipole
moments in equilibrium with heat baths at two different temperatures. This
quantity follows from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) for the
fluctuations of the multipolar moments. We compare the behavior of the
conductance as a function of the distance between the particles with the result
obtained by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The formalism proposed
enables us to provide a comprehensive explanation of the marked growth of the
conductance when decreasing the distance between the nanoparticles
Class of exact solutions of the Skyrme and the Faddeev model
Class of exact solutions of the Skyrme and the Faddeev model are presented.
In contrast to previously found solutions, they are produced by the interplay
of the two terms in the Lagrangians of the models. They are not solitonic but
of wave character. With an appropriate choice of field variables, the field
equations of the two models are written in exactly the same form. The solutions
supply us with examples of the superposition of two plane waves in nonlinear

The Nuclear Sigma Term in the Skyrme Model: Pion-Nucleus Interaction
The nuclear sigma term is calculated including the nuclear matrix element of
the derivative of the NN interaction with respect to the quark mass,
. The NN potential is evaluated in the
skyrmion-skyrmion picture within the quantized product ansatz. The contribution
of the NN potential to the nuclear sigma term provides repulsion to the
pion-nucleus interaction. The strength of the s-wave pion-nucleus optical
potential is estimated including such contribution. The results are consistent

Dynamical description of vesicle growth and shape change
We systematize and extend the description of vesicle growth and shape change
using linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics. By restricting the study to shape
changes from spheres to axisymmetric ellipsoids, we are able to give a
consistent formulation which includes the lateral tension of the vesicle
membrane. This allows us to generalize and correct a previous calculation. Our
present calculations suggest that, for small growing vesicles, a prolate
ellipsoidal shape should be favored over oblate ellipsoids, whereas for large
growing vesicles oblates should be favored over prolates. The validity of this
prediction is examined in the light of the various assumptions made in its

Diquarks and Exotic Spectroscopy
We propose that the recently discovered \Theta baryon is a bound state of
four quarks and an antiquark, containing two highly correlated ud-pairs. If so,
the \Theta baryon has positive parity, and it lies in an near-ideally mixed
SU(3)_{f} \mathbf{\bar{10}}_{f} oplus \mathbf{8}_{f}. The Roper resonance and
the P_{11}(1710) fit naturally into this classification. We predict an isospin
3/2 multiplet of \Xi's (S=-2) with J^{\Pi}=\half^{+} around 1750 MeV. A search
for manifestly exotic \Xi^{+} and \Xi^{--} in this mass range could provide a
sharp test of our proposal. We predict that charm and bottom analogues of the

Skyrmions from a Born-Infeld Action
We consider a geometrically motivated Skyrme model based on a general
covariant kinetic term proposed originally by Born and Infeld. We introduce
this new term by generalizing the Born-Infeld action to a non-abelian
gauge theory and by using the hidden gauge symmetry formalism. The static
properties of the Skyrmion are then analyzed and compared with other

Nucleon-nucleon interaction in the Skyrme model
We consider the interaction of two skyrmions in the framework of the sudden
approximation. The widely used product ansatz is investigated. Its failure in
reproducing an attractive central potential is associated with terms that
violate G-parity. We discuss the construction of alternative ans\"atze and
