Generalized Robba rings

Get PDF
We prove that any projective coadmissible module over the locally analytic distribution algebra of a compact pp-adic Lie group is finitely generated. In particular, the category of coadmissible modules does not have enough projectives. In the Appendix a "generalized Robba ring" for uniform pro-pp groups is constructed which naturally contains the locally analytic distribution algebra as a subring. The construction uses the theory of generalized microlocalization of quasi-abelian normed algebras that is also developed there. We equip this generalized Robba ring with a self-dual locally convex topology extending the topology on the distribution algebra. This is used to show some results on coadmissible modules.Comment: with an appendix by Peter Schneider; revised; new titl

Quantum and Boltzmann transport in the quasi-one-dimensional wire with rough edges

We study quantum transport in Q1D wires made of a 2D conductor of width W and length L>>W. Our aim is to compare an impurity-free wire with rough edges with a smooth wire with impurity disorder. We calculate the electron transmission through the wires by the scattering-matrix method, and we find the Landauer conductance for a large ensemble of disordered wires. We study the impurity-free wire whose edges have a roughness correlation length comparable with the Fermi wave length. The mean resistance and inverse mean conductance 1/ are evaluated in dependence on L. For L -> 0 we observe the quasi-ballistic dependence 1/ = = 1/N_c + \rho_{qb} L/W, where 1/N_c is the fundamental contact resistance and \rho_{qb} is the quasi-ballistic resistivity. As L increases, we observe crossover to the diffusive dependence 1/ = = 1/N^{eff}_c + \rho_{dif} L/W, where \rho_{dif} is the resistivity and 1/N^{eff}_c is the effective contact resistance corresponding to the N^{eff}_c open channels. We find the universal results \rho_{qb}/\rho_{dif} = 0.6N_c and N^{eff}_c = 6 for N_c >> 1. As L exceeds the localization length \xi, the resistance shows onset of localization while the conductance shows the diffusive dependence 1/ = 1/N^{eff}_c + \rho_{dif} L/W up to L = 2\xi and the localization for L > 2\xi only. On the contrary, for the impurity disorder we find a standard diffusive behavior, namely 1/ = = 1/N_c + \rho_{dif} L/W for L < \xi. We also derive the wire conductivity from the semiclassical Boltzmann equation, and we compare the semiclassical electron mean-free path with the mean free path obtained from the quantum resistivity \rho_{dif}. They coincide for the impurity disorder, however, for the edge roughness they strongly differ, i.e., the diffusive transport is not semiclassical. It becomes semiclassical for the edge roughness with large correlation length

Selection of mild virus strains of fanleaf degeneration by comparative field performance of infected grapevines

Healthy clones of Vitis vinifera L. cultivars Klevener de Heiligenstein, Chardonnay and Pinot noir were graft-inoculated with one clone of the rootstock Kober 5BB infected with potential mild strains of arabis mosaic virus (ArMV-Ta) or grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV-CB844 or -F13). Such infected vines were planted in a nematode-free replant site and screened for comparative field performance on pruning weight, crop yield, bunch weight, and sugar content over a 5-year period. ArMV-Ta had the mildest impact on both vigor and yield for all three V. vinifera cultivars tested. The impact of ArMV-Ta, along with the other two GFLV strains, was much less evident during the last two years of the trial. Based on these results, ArMV-Ta was selected as a potential mild strain for cross-protection to control fanleaf degeneration. Our field trial also showed that field performance of infected vines was not affected by the vein mosaic virus-like disease

Comparison of pQCT parameters between ulna and radius in retired elite gymnasts : the skeletal benefits associated with long-term gymnastics are bone- and site-specific

Objectives: To compare the skeletal benefits associated with gymnastics between ulna and radius. Methods: 19 retired artistic gymnasts, aged 18-36 years, were compared to 24 sedentary women. Bone mineral content (BMC), total and cortical bone area (ToA, CoA), trabecular and cortical volumetric density (TrD, CoD) and cortical thickness (CoTh) were measured by pQCT at the 4% and 66% forearm. Results: At the 4% site, BMC and ToA were more than twice greater at the radius than ulna whereas at the 66% site, BMC, ToA, CoA, CoTh and SSIpol were 20 to 51% greater at the ulna than radius in both groups (p<0.0001). At the 4% site, the skeletal benefits in BMC of the retired gymnasts over the non-gymnasts were 1.9 times greater at the radius than ulna (p<0.001), with enlarged bone size at the distal radius only. In contrast, the skeletal benefits at the 66% site were twice greater at the ulna than radius for BMC and CoA (p<0.01).Conclusion: Whereas the skeletal benefits associated with long-term gymnastics were greater at the radius than ulna in the distal forearm, the reverse was found in the proximal forearm, suggesting both bones should be analysed when investigating forearm strength.<br /

Beat-wave generation of plasmons in semiconductor plasmas

It is shown that in semiconductor plasmas, it is possible to generate large amplitude plasma waves by the beating of two laser beams with frequency difference close to the plasma frequency. For narrow gap semiconductors (for example n-type InSb), the system can simulate the physics underlying beat wave generation in relativistic gaseous plasmas.Comment: 11 pages, LaTex, no figures, no macro

Light from Cascading Partons in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We calculate the production of high energy photons from Compton and annihilation processes as well as fragmentation off quarks in the parton cascade model. The multiple scattering of partons is seen to lead to a substantial production of high energy photons, which rises further when parton multiplication due to final state radiation is included. The photon yield is found to be proportional to the number of collisions among the cascading partons.Comment: revised version: 4 pages, 4 figures, uses REVTEX

Stationary distributions for diffusions with inert drift

Get PDF
Consider reflecting Brownian motion in a bounded domain in Rd{\mathbb R^d} that acquires drift in proportion to the amount of local time spent on the boundary of the domain. We show that the stationary distribution for the joint law of the position of the reflecting Brownian motion and the value of the drift vector has a product form. Moreover, the first component is uniformly distributed on the domain, and the second component has a Gaussian distribution. We also consider more general reflecting diffusions with inert drift as well as processes where the drift is given in terms of the gradient of a potential

Hydrodynamic modeling of deconfinement phase transition in nuclear collisions

The (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics is used to simulate collisions of gold nuclei with bombarding energies from 1 to 160 GeV per nucleon. The initial state is represented by two cold Lorentz-boosted nuclei. Two equations of state: with and without the deconfinement phase transition are used. We have investigated dynamical trajectories of compressed baryon-rich matter as functions of various thermodynamical variables. The parameters of collective flow and hadronic spectra are calculated. It is shown that presence of the deconfinement phase transition leads to increase of the elliptic flow and to flattening of proton rapidity distributions.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
