The Big Pet Diabetes Survey: Perceived Frequency and Triggers for Euthanasia

    Get PDF
Current pet diabetes mellitus (DM) treatment necessitates the active daily involvement of owners and can be costly. The current study aimed to investigate the owner population which opts for euthanasia instead of DM treatment. A survey was designed using multiple feedback steps and made available online to veterinarians world-wide. A total of 1192 veterinarians completed the survey and suggested a median one in 10 diabetic pets are euthanased at diagnosis; a further median one in 10 within one year because of lack of success or compliance. Perceived most important motivating factors included “presence concurrent disease” (45% respondents); “costs” (44%); “animal age” (37%); “problems obtaining adequate control” (35%); “pet welfare” (35%); and “impact owner’s lifestyle” (32%). Cats in Canadian (odds ratio (OR) 2.7), Australian (OR 2.3), rural (OR 1.6) and mixed (OR 1.7) practices were more likely to be euthanased because of DM diagnosis, while cats presented to referral/university were less likely to be euthanased (OR 0.6). Dogs were more likely to be euthanased because of DM in Canadian (OR 1.8), rural (OR 1.8) and mixed (OR 1.6) practices. The survey results suggest that benefit exists in improved DM education with emphasis on offering a choice of treatment styles ranging from intense and expensive to hands-off and cheap

Flight investigation of a vertical-velocity command system for VTOL aircraft

    Get PDF
A flight investigation was undertaken to assess the potential benefits afforded by a vertical-velocity command system (VVCS) for VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. This augmentation system was conceived primarily as a means of lowering pilot workload during decelerating approaches to a hover and/or landing under category III instrument meteorological conditions. The scope of the investigation included a determination of acceptable system parameters, a visual flight evaluation, and an instrument flight evaluation which employed a 10 deg, decelerating, simulated instrument approach task. The results indicated that the VVCS, which decouples the pitch and vertical degrees of freedom, provides more accurate glide-path tracking and a lower pilot workload than does the unaugmented system

A role for the cleaved cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin in the nucleus

Cell-cell contacts play a vital role in intracellular signaling, although the molecular mechanisms of these signaling pathways are not fully understood. E-cadherin, an important mediator of cell-cell adhesions, has been shown to be cleaved by γ-secretase. This cleavage releases a fragment of E-cadherin, E-cadherin C-terminal fragment 2 (E-cad/CTF2), into the cytosol. Here, we study the fate and function of this fragment. First, we show that coexpression of the cadherin-binding protein, p120 catenin (p120), enhances the nuclear translocation of E-cad/CTF2. By knocking down p120 with short interfering RNA, we also demonstrate that p120 is necessary for the nuclear localization of E-cad/CTF2. Furthermore, p120 enhances and is required for the specific binding of E-cad/CTF2 to DNA. Finally, we show that E-cad/CTF2 can regulate the p120-Kaiso-mediated signaling pathway in the nucleus. These data indicate a novel role for cleaved E-cadherin in the nucleus

For a precise diagnosis of the wheat bunt diseases, common bunt and dwarf bunt (Tilletia spp.), reliable and reproducible methods are essential. Further the accurate quantification of the spore number on infested seed is important for seed multiplication and international seed trading, as different thresholds and quarantine regulations have to be considered. At present the determination of the teliospores is carried out according to a filtration method (ISTA 1984) combined with a microscopic examination requiring considerable experience to distinguish the different Tilletia species. Therefore the aim of this research work is to develop an efficient molecular testing method by means of quantitative Real-time PCR (qPCR). Based on genome data species specific markers are designed and tested for their specificity on several strains from different countries. For the quantification calibration lines are established to calculate the spore number of test samples

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common endocrine disease of cats. The prevalence of DM in cats in England is not well‐defined. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and identify risk factors for DM in a large population of cats attending primary‐care practices. ANIMALS: A cohort of 193,563 cats in the VetCompass Programme attending 118 primary‐care practices in England. METHODS: Cross‐sectional analysis of cohort clinical data. Data were extracted covering September 1st 2009 and August 31st 2014. Period prevalence of DM was calculated. Associations between risk factors and DM were assessed using logistic regression modelling. RESULTS: Of 1,128 DM cases were identified among 194,563 cats (period prevalence 0.58%; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.54–0.61). Multivariable modelling indicated that Tonkinese (OR 4.1; 95% CI 1.8–9.6; P = .001), Norwegian Forest (odds ratio [OR] 3.5; 95% CI 1.3–9.6; P = .001) and Burmese (OR 3.0; 95% CI 2.0–4.4; P < .001) cats had increased odds of DM compared with crossbred cats. DM odds increased as bodyweight categories increased above 4 kg (P < .001), as cats aged beyond 6 years old (P < .001) and in insured cats (OR 2.0; 95% CI 1.6–2.4; P < .001) but sex was not significantly associated with DM. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Diabetes mellitus is an important component of the primary‐care practice caseload with 1‐in‐200 cats affected. An increased risk of DM in certain cat breeds supports a genetic predisposition. These results can guide future research and preventative healthcare

Soft gluon resummation for squark and gluino pair-production at hadron colliders

We report on the study of soft gluon effects in the production of squarks and gluinos at hadron colliders. Close to production threshold, the emission of soft gluon results in the appearence of large logarithmic corrections in the theoretical expressions. In order to resum these corrections at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy appropriate one-loop anomalous dimensions have to be calculated. We present the calculation of the anomalous dimensions for all production channels of squarks and gluinos and provide numerical predictions for the Tevatron and the LHC.Comment: 6 pages, talk given at RADCOR 2009 - 9th International Symposium on Radiative Corrections (Applications of Quantum Field Theory to Phenomenology) October 25-30 2009, Ascona, Switzerlan

3D negative electrode stacks for integrated all-solid-state lithium-ion microbatteries

    Get PDF
The deposition feasibility and electrochemical evaluation of highly structured negative electrode stacks for 3D-integrated batteries is demonstrated. The stacks comprise a TiN thin film, serving as both current collector and Li-barrier layer, covered by a polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) thin film as electrode material. In comparison with planar films, these poly-Si films present a storage capacity increase of about 5x for the highest pore aspect ratio electrodes. The step coverage of poly-Si can be considerably improved by growing TiN and poly-Si into wide trenches. This results in much smoother poly-Si films and significantly improved step coverage. Further optimization of the trench dimensions should result in poly-Si films with a Li-storage capacity increase of more than one order of magnitude with respect to planar films

Pilot assessment of two computer-generated display formats for helicopter instrument approach

    Get PDF
Two computer generated display formats were evaluated as primary displays by six research pilots in a fixed base simulator. One of the computer generated display formats was an electronic attitude director indicator (EADI) which featured three cue flight director, command information, superimposed on true perspective runway symbology. The other computer generated display format featured separate horizontal and vertical situation information with vector predictors. A baseline display, consisting of an electromechanical attitude director indicator (ADI) with a three cue flight director and a moving map, was used as a reference for the pilot evaluations

Spontaneous superconducting islands and Hall voltage in clean superconductors

We study a clean superconductor in the Hall configuration, in the framework of a purely dissipative time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau theory. We find situations in which the order parameter differs significantly from zero in a set of islands that appear to form a periodic structure. When the pattern of islands becomes irregular, it moves in or against the direction of the current and a Hall voltage is found. Tiny differences in the initial state may reverse the sign of the Hall voltage. When the average Hall voltage vanishes, the local Hall voltage does not necessarily vanish. We examine the influence that several boundary conditions at the electrodes have on these effects.Comment: 6 pages, Includes additional cases and more detailed result
