Thermospheric density perturbations in response to substorms
We use 5 years (2001–2005) of CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite data to study average spatial and temporal mass density perturbations caused by magnetospheric substorms in the thermosphere. Using statistics from 2306 substorms to construct superposed epoch time series, we find that the largest average increase in mass density of about 6% occurs about 90 min after substorm expansion phase onset about 3 h of magnetic local time east of the onset region. Averaged over the entire polar auroral region, a mass density increase of about 4% is observed. Using a simple model to estimate the mass density increase at the satellite altitude, we find that an energy deposition rate of 30 GW applied for half an hour predominantly at an altitude of 110 km is able to produce mass density enhancements of the same magnitude. When taking into account previous work that has shown that 80% of the total energy input is due to Joule heating, i.e., enhanced electric fields, whereas 20% is due to precipitation of mainly electrons, our results suggest that the average substorm deposits about 6 GW in the polar thermosphere through particle precipitation. Our result is in good agreement with simultaneous measurements of the NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) Hemispheric Power Index; however, it is about 1 order of magnitude less than reported previously
Efficient Pattern Matching in Python
Pattern matching is a powerful tool for symbolic computations. Applications
include term rewriting systems, as well as the manipulation of symbolic
expressions, abstract syntax trees, and XML and JSON data. It also allows for
an intuitive description of algorithms in the form of rewrite rules. We present
the open source Python module MatchPy, which offers functionality and
expressiveness similar to the pattern matching in Mathematica. In particular,
it includes syntactic pattern matching, as well as matching for commutative
and/or associative functions, sequence variables, and matching with
constraints. MatchPy uses new and improved algorithms to efficiently find
matches for large pattern sets by exploiting similarities between patterns. The
performance of MatchPy is investigated on several real-world problems
Detector imperfections in photon-pair source characterization
We analyze how imperfections in single-photon detectors impact the
characterization of photon-pair sources. We perform exact calculations to
reveal the effects of multi-pair emissions and of noisy, non-unit efficiency,
non photon-number resolving detections on the Cauchy-Schwarz parameter, on the
second order auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions, and on the
visibilities of both Hong-Ou-Mandel and Bell-like interferences. We consider
sources producing either two-mode squeezed states or states with a Poissonian
photon distribution. The proposed formulas are useful in practice to determine
the impacts of multi-pair emissions and dark counts in standard tests used in
quantum optics.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Entanglement purification of multi-mode quantum states
An iterative random procedure is considered allowing an entanglement
purification of a class of multi-mode quantum states. In certain cases, a
complete purification may be achieved using only a single signal state
preparation. A physical implementation based on beam splitter arrays and
non-linear elements is suggested. The influence of loss is analyzed in the
example of a purification of entangled N-mode coherent states.Comment: 6 pages, 3 eps-figures, using revtex
Cluster spacecraft observations of a ULF wave enhanced by Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR)
Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) is a high-latitude ionospheric heating facility capable of exciting ULF waves on local magnetic field lines. We examine an interval from 1 February 2006 when SPEAR was transmitting a 1 Hz modulation signal with a 10 min on-off cycle. Ground magnetometer data indicated that SPEAR modulated currents in the local ionosphere at 1 Hz, and enhanced a natural field line resonance with a 10 min period. During this interval the Cluster spacecraft passed over the heater site. Signatures of the SPEAR-enhanced field line resonance were present in the magnetic field data measured by the magnetometer on-board Cluster-2. These are the first joint ground- and space-based detections of field line tagging by SPEAR
Conditional quantum-state transformation at a beam splitter
Using conditional measurement on a beam splitter, we study the transformation
of the quantum state of the signal mode within the concept of two-port
non-unitary transformation. Allowing for arbitrary quantum states of both the
input reference mode and the output reference mode on which the measurement is
performed, we show that the non-unitary transformation operator can be given as
an -ordered operator product, where the value of is entirely determined
by the absolute value of the beam splitter reflectance (or transmittance). The
formalism generalizes previously obtained results that can be recovered by
simple specification of the non-unitary transformation operator. As an
application, we consider the generation of Schr\"odinger-cat-like states. An
extension to mixed states and imperfect detection is outlined.Comment: 7 Postscript figures, using Late
Tumour burden in early stage Hodgkin's disease: the single most important prognostic factor for outcome after radiotherapy.
One hundred and forty-two patients with Hodgkin's disease PS I or II were treated with total or subtotal nodal irradiation as part of a prospective randomized trial in the Danish National Hodgkin Study during the period 1971-83. They were followed till death or--at the time of this analysis--from 15 to 146 months after initiation of therapy. The initial tumour burden of each patient was assessed, combining tumour size of each involved region and number of regions involved. Tumour burden thus assessed proved to be the single most important prognostic factor with regard to disease free survival. Other known prognostic factors such as number of involved regions, mediastinal size, pathological stage, systemic symptoms, and ESR were related to tumour burden and lost their prognostic significance in a multivariate analysis. The only other factors of independent significance were histologic subtype and, to a lesser extent, sex. Combining tumour burden and histologic subtype made it possible to single out a group of patients with a very poor disease free survival. These patients also had a poorer survival from Hodgkin's disease and thus clearly candidates for additional initial treatment
Brorfelde Schmidt CCD Catalog (BSCC)
The Brorfelde Schmidt CCD Catalog (BSCC) contains about 13.7 million stars,
north of +49 deg Declination with precise positions and V, R photometry. The
catalog has been constructed from the reductions of 18,667 CCD frames observed
with the Brorfelde Schmidt Telescope between 2000 and 2007. The Tycho-2 catalog
was used for astrometric and photometric reference stars. Errors of individual
positions are about 20 to 200 mas for stars in the R = 10 to 18 mag range.
External comparisons with 2MASS and SDSS reveal possible small systematic
errors in the BSCC of up to about 30 mas. The catalog is supplemented with J,
H, and K_s magnitudes from the 2MASS catalog. The catalog data file (about 550
MB ASCII, compressed) will be made available at the Strasbourg Data Center
(CDS).Comment: 16 pages, 22 figures, 2 tables, accepted by A
Computer-Based Executive Function Training for Combat Veterans With PTSD: A Pilot Clinical Trial Assessing Feasibility and Predictors of Dropout
Background: While evidence-based PTSD treatments are often efficacious, 20–50% of individuals continue to experience significant symptoms following treatment. Further, these treatments do not directly target associated neuropsychological deficits. Here, we describe the methods and feasibility for computer-based executive function training (EFT), a potential alternative or adjunctive PTSD treatment. Methods: Male combat veterans with full or partial PTSD (n = 20) and combat-exposed controls (used for normative comparison; n = 20) completed clinical, neuropsychological and functional neuroimaging assessments. Those with PTSD were assigned to EFT (n = 13) or placebo training (word games; n = 7) at home for 6 weeks, followed by repeat assessment. Baseline predictors of treatment completion were explored using logistic regressions. Individual feedback and changes in clinical symptoms, neuropsychological function, and neural activation patterns are described. Results: Dropout rates for EFT and placebo training were 38.5 and 57.1%, respectively. Baseline clinical severity and brain activation (i.e., prefrontal-insula-amygdala networks) during an emotional anticipation task were predictive of treatment completion. Decreases in clinical symptoms were observed following treatment in both groups. EFT participants improved on training tasks but not on traditional neuropsychological assessments. All training completers indicated liking EFT, and indicated they would engage in EFT (alone or as adjunctive treatment) if offered. Conclusion: Results provide an initial framework to explore the feasibility of placebo-controlled, computerized, home-based executive function training (EFT) on psychological and neuropsychological function and brain activation in combat veterans with PTSD. Clinical severity and neural reactivity to emotional stimuli may indicate which veterans will complete home-based computerized interventions. While EFT may serve as a potential alternative or adjunctive PTSD treatment, further research is warranted to address compliance and determine whether EFT may benefit functioning above and beyond placebo interventions
Disrupted Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Order Release Delay
With the popularity of the just-in-time system, more and more companies are operating with little or no inventories, which make them highly vulnerable to delays on supply. This paper discusses a situation when the supply of the commodity does not arrive at the depot on time, so that not enough of the commodity is available to be loaded on all vehicles at the start of the delivery period. New routing plans need to be developed in such a case to reduce the impact the delay of supply may have on the distribution company. The resulting vehicle routing problem is different from other types of vehicle routing problems as it involves waiting and multiple trips. Two approaches have been developed to solve the order release delay problem, both of which involve a Tabu Search algorithm. Computational results show the proposed approaches can largely reduce the disruption costs that are caused by the delayed supply and they are especially effective when the length of delay is long
